YEAR 9 BATTLEFIELDS’ TRIP: FRIDAY 18TH NOVEMBER 2016

By Ms Oliver

On Friday 18th November, 42 Year 9 pupils from Bolingbroke Academy visited France and Belgium. We set

off at 4.15am and travelled to France via Eurotunnel. When drove through France until we arrived in Bel-

gium. Our first stop was at the Yorkshire Trench. It is now surrounded by a modern composting manufac-

turer so when the pupils got off the coach, the first thing they noticed was the awful smell in the area!

Here, pupils were able to walk in a preserved trench and see the layout of different trench lines.

After visiting the Yorkshire Trench, we made our way to Langemark Cemetery. This is a German cemetery

and provides a stark contrast with that of Tyne Cot Cemetery which we visited afterwards. By this point, it

was sleeting, very windy and extremely cold. Pupils explored the cemeteries and reflected on the loss of

life and the reasons for the differences between the German cemetery and the allies’ cemetery.

Then, we made our way to the Hooge Crater Museum and trenches. Pupils changed into their wellington

boots and old trainers before walking through the muddy, yet preserved trenches and craters.

Our penultimate visit was to the In Flanders Fields Museum which is situated in the old cloth hall in Ypres.

Pupils received poppy bracelets which could be used to engage with the interactive museum exhibits.

Our final stop was at the chocolate shop in Ypres. We were welcomed with a sign and a free chocolate

each, before the shop was closed to the public to give our pupils time to buy some presents to take home!

After our visit, we returned to the coach via the Menin Gate Memorial before starting the journey home.

We arrived back at school at 7.30pm, a little ahead of schedule, having made whistle-stop tour of many key

sites for the WW1 Battlefields.

A special thank you to Ms Austin, Ms Anslow-Moore and Mr Rands for supporting me on this trip. Getting

out of the classroom to see History “in action” is a fantastic opportunity for the pupils at Bolingbroke and

is one that will continue year on year.

ATTENTION: IF YOU ARE IN YEAR 8 – LETTERS HAVE GONE HOME VIA BOLING-

BROKEPOST. RETURN YOUR REPLY SLIPS AND PAY VIA WISEPAY TO SECURE YOUR

PLACE ON THE 2017 BATTLEFIELDS’ TRIP IN 2017.

Hound IN THE COMMUNITY

WANDSWORTH YOUTH COUNCIL

By Rae Madoc Jones, Year 11 Verbiest 8

Last Tuesday, I was elected Chair of Wandsworth Youth Council.

Wandsworth Youth Council is a group of 11-19 year olds, which aims to

help young people, regardless of background or personal barriers, make

the world a better place for all of us. Youth Council makes changes bene-

fitting the Youth nationally and internationally, running projects like Peer

Education in mental health in schools, and the Youth Unemployment In-

spection, where we inspect the services available for unemployed young people in the borough.

As Chair, I am the youth representative for all the young people in Wandsworth. I represent Wands-

worth Youth Council regionally and nationally at events, and I am responsible for helping to plan sessions,

leading sessions, organising events, and coming up with ideas to improve what we do at Youth Council,

which means we can strengthen our impact on Wandsworth.

One of the great opportunities Wandsworth Youth Council offers to all schools in the borough is the

annual Takeover Challenge. On Friday, I helped run the Challenge, where young people take over jobs in

or related to the Council. It was a great opportunity for all the schools and young people involved, and I

led the sessions for all the participants along with the Deputy-Chair, which was a great experience and

opportunity. As part of Takeover Day, I got to have a meeting with Ravi Govindia, the leader of Wands-

worth Council, along with the rest of the Leadership Team. It was incredibly interesting, and a great op-

portunity I am very grateful to have had.

Another great thing that we run at Wandsworth Youth Council is Police Youth Think Tanks, which

aim to remove the tension and gap between the youth and the police through running a session uniting

them. We have so far run 3 of these sessions (which are around 2-3 hours long) on a variety of deeply

relevant topics, such as knife crime and stop and search. The next Think Tank is on December 6th and

will focus on Hate Crime – crimes motivated by racial, sexual or other prejudice, and typically involving

violence. Anyone can come to the Think Tanks for free, and there is free pizza at the end. The Think

Tanks are amazing opportunities to have your opinion heard, and to learn more on seriously interest-

ing topics.

If you are interested in attending the next Police Youth Think Tank:

Location: The Training and Resource Centre, Alma Road, SW18 1AQ (which is really close

to school – see me if you want directions!)

Time: 5-8pm

Topic: Hate Crime

If you have any questions, email or come and find me and I can answer them!

CAREERS AND UNIVERSITY SUCCESS

London’s biggest job fair for 15-24 year olds will be help on the 9th and 10th December at Excel. I would

highly recommend that the year 11 pupils visit this fair on Friday 9th December when it is a school IN-

SET day.

More information and can be found here: http://www.skillslondon2016.co.uk/ you will need to book a

place.

Each year, the event attracts over 30,000 young Londoners, teachers and parents and is a fantastic op-

portunity for pupils to get ahead of the game and meet top employers, colleges, training providers and

advisors face-to-face in a highly interactive and inspirational environment.

Your children will get to try new skills, experience a huge range of careers and make helpful contacts

for their future pathways.

This year’s event will offer visitors over 45,000 jobs and apprenticeship opportunities, a range of work

experience from top recruiters including ourselves, plus one-to-one specialist careers advice, mock

interviews, industry insight workshops and masses of hands-on, inspirational skill bites.

TRIP TO THE LAW SOCIETY

By Ms Robinson

On the 18th of November, we took six year 11’s; Kaydena

Smith, Alex Dokic, Dilan Polat, Ruthie Parkman, Ariana

Farmanfarmaian and Moniece Mullings, to a conference at

The Law Society.

In the morning our pupils got to meet and greet with Solici-

tors, Barristers and even a Judge, as well as many others.

They were thrown in at the deep end discussing defamation,

libel and lawsuits around Social Media in small groups. They

held their own in discussions with other Ark pupils. They

drew their own conclusions about the misuse, intent and

consequences of a said Mr Allen, articulating their thought

processes to practicing lawyers.

The afternoon was equally full, with a panel of experts an-

swering questions on their chosen careers – Legal Execu-

tive, Barrister, Solicitor and Clarke - and how they got to

where they are This was followed by a convincing recrea-

tion of a court room battle regarding one Ms Goldilocks

and a Mr Daddy Bear. Cross examination of both witnesses

led to a split in opinion, however two of our pupils found

their way into the jury and in the end it was a unanimous

decision that Ms Goldilocks had not been the subject of

unreasonable force given the circumstances! All round a

useful, fascinating glimpse into the world of law and the dif-

ferent careers within it, as well as a range of routes to get

there.

YEAR 8 BOYS FOOTBALL V ASHCROFT

MATCH REPORT

The Year 8 boys football team began the 2016-17 season with the first game in the newly formed

‘Wandsworth School Football League’ (WSFL) at home against Ashcroft.

With a number of new faces on the team and some positional changes, Bolingbroke started the game

on top but couldn’t quite get on the score sheet. Then, against the run of play, Bolingbroke conceded a

corner and with a well-placed volley Ashcroft took the lead. Bolingbroke reacted positively and went

on the attack with a number of shots on target but nothing hitting the back of the net.

Bolingbroke continued to apply first half pressure with Kai Weston and Amir Sultan Edwards de-

fending well on the flanks and supplying some good balls for the likes of Finn Morgan-Murrell and

Fredua Agyeman Opoku-Boamah. Bolingbroke was then awarded a penalty, which they scored at

first, only to have to retake the shot. The following penalty wasn’t as successful as it hit the cross-bar

just at the half-time whistle.

A spirited team talk and some changes saw Bolingbroke start the second half just as they finished the

first. They were then caught on the counter attack twice in the next few minutes; 0-3 and a big hill to

climb. The players stayed positive with Nikita Authier-Labille and Emir Kaya working tirelessly.

Again Bolingbroke attacked and chances were coming thick and fast, but still nothing. Ashcroft began

to pass the ball around and managed to score, 0-4. Bolingbroke kept their heads up with 15 minutes to

go, another break out had Amir Sultan-Edwards one-on-one with the goalkeeper 1-4.

A spirited fight to the end saw the game end 4-1 to Ashcroft. Not the perfect start to the season, but

lots of lessons learnt, and onwards and upwards from here!
