school cAlenDArthe Leadership of our two mCs was outstanding and i congratulate April Harrison (Year 12, Andrew House) and Will Symons (Year 12, Stewart House). i also wish to acknowledge the wonderful performances of Andeli Zuzic (Year 12, Rutter House) who led the assembly in the singing of our national Anthem, Joseph Alberti (Year 12, Stewart House) for his playing of the Last Post and Reveille, and madeleine Griffeth for her playing of the bagpipes.

i congratulate all our students for their amazing level of regard and respect for the occasion and the ceremony.

this year the weather was on our side and we were able to run our ceremony outside in the central courtyard. it was beautiful to hear only the sounds of nature during our one minute of silence.

2018-2019 open morning and information evening

the open morning and information evening were held on thursday 19 April. Both events were a real success and i take this opportunity to thank all families that participated in one or both of the events. During both sessions, the air was buzzing with the excitement and anticipation of both prospective parents and students and we trust that as they sit down to make their decisions of a secondary school for 2019, eltham High school remains at the forefront of their thoughts.

i take this opportunity to thank all our students that led tours on the day. Feedback from participants was exceptionally positive and a clear indication that each of our students represented our school admirably.

our student speakers at the information night were also very informative and very well received by our audience. i also thank all our staff that participated in a range of ways to make the evening a real success for our visitors.

in particular, i wish to acknowledge the hard work of the Vet Hospitality students who did an exceptional job with their preparation and presentation of the supper. it was delicious and much appreciated by all.

Victorian youth week

Last Friday afternoon a number of our students participated in the youth week summit hosted by our Local member of Parliament, Vicki ward.

Ella Dickinson (Year 11, Stewart House); April Harrison (Year 12, Andrew House); Lily Whiteman (Year 11, Rutter House); Tanner Carozzi (Year 9, Rutter House); April Butterworth (Year 12, Everard House); Stephanie Kervin (Year 11, Stewart House); Sydney Passey (Year 11, Rutter House); Bailey Johnson (Year 10, Stewart House); Nathan Gunn (Year 10, Andrew House) and Zac Broeren (Year 11, Everard House) enjoyed a twilight barbeque in the company of other young people from the local area.

the purpose of the event was to celebrate the youth in the area and to give them another opportunity to express their voices and be heard by a member of the Victorian Parliament. the views of our young people are very important and they need a range of avenues through which to share and communicate these views. this event provided such an avenue for them to do this. the feedback from our students was very positive.

many thanks to Vicki ward for providing this opportunity for our young people.

Junior ScHool week 2 of term 2 is a busy one for our year 7s. our indonesian students have been involved in the Ayo Bermain Angklung! (Let’s play the Angklung!) workshop today. we have year 7 immunisations on thursday morning, student Progress interviews on thursday evening and on Friday, all year 7s will be viewing edward scissorhands, the film that we will be studying this term, in the Performance space.

students are encouraged to attend the student Progress interviews with their parents/guardians as we work together to identify next steps in their learning.

organisation and time management can be a challenge for many year 7s as they begin high school. By now, these challenges should be becoming more manageable but for some students they remain a key area for focus. if you and/or your student is feeling like they need some additional support with these skills, the smart not scattered lunchtime group will be starting from next thursday may 3 in Room 136. this group is focused on goal setting and on learning new strategies to manage time and organisation. it’s a great chance to meet some new people and to get some help getting on top.

smart not scattered is only one of many lunchtime options for students. we are in full swing with our lunchtime Program of clubs and activities and our year 7 students are trying new activities this term as they branch out and make new friends through shared interests.

MiddlE ScHool year 8 surf Camp Reflection

“Camp was really good. The food was great. I especially liked lunch on the second day. Paddle boarding was by far my favourite activity. It was so easy and the water was really refreshing.

I enjoyed getting to know more about the people in 8D. It was good having the open space in between the dorm rooms to sit and relax. I would recomend this camp to other people.”

eltham mudbrick tour 2018 – eltham High school Community Call for Assistance

the eltham mudbrick tour is a highly regarded nillumbik shire festival, with an almost continuous history back to 1964, and has been a major fundraiser for the eltham High school music Program since 2010, run by the Friends of music Program. in 2017 the tour directly raised over $15,000 that has just been used entirely to purchase new instruments for our music students.

what we need right now is an infusion of new blood! Passionate eltham High school community minded people to join a core of old hands to literally get this year’s show on the road!

there are all kinds of jobs and skills needed to plan and run the event. there is a lot to do, and we immediately need to form a new committee to prepare and run the event which is to be held on sunday 21 october 2018.

we particularly need someone with great project management skills to help coordinate the tour planning; people to find houses to show and a passionate social media savvy mudbrick aficionado or two to help keep our Facebook page up to date.

other skills needed include liaising with our sponsors and finding new ones, liaising with the householders, managing tryBooking ticketing, planning the tour route and transport, graphic design for flyers, event promotion in our community and more widely, and potentially managing local winery tasting/sales. on the day, our volunteers help with bus driving, route marking, house visits, parking attendants, catering, and more.

if you can help with organising this year’s event, please contact: Darren squires eltham High school Assistant Principal 9430 5111, [email protected]

you can learn more on our web site - http://elthammudbricktour.org

and check out our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/elthammudbricktour

specifically for this folio. tess shared many personal stories of George and his friends and the making of the folio. she also discussed some of the individual artworks and explained the various printing techniques and processes as well as the thought and idea behind each work.

Clare Leporati, the Arts and Cultural Programs officer at the nillumbik shire, introduced the ekphrasis Poetry Competition to our students and Grace Longato, the Cultural Collection officer, gave an introductions about nillumbik shire’s art collection. the Baldessin and Friends is the shire’s latest art acquisition.

the artwork on show and the stories that come with them clearly resonated with many students and it was great for our inspiring artists and writers to realise that they are the next generation of an artistic community that isright here.

the 6th Brainstem innovation Challenge

the first meeting this term for our team of Sasha Brooke (Year 10, Everard House), Aneurin Brown (Year 10, Rutter House), Joe Leahy (Year 10, Stewart House) and Miro Zelazny (Year 10, Stewart House) working with Dr shaun Gietman looked at using energy more efficiently in a car engine:

• would it be possible to develop a piston mechanism in the exhaust to generate energy for use in the car. would it affect the efficiency of the engine by increasing the back pressure?

• Possibly connect into the cooling system of the engine to draw heated water that could be used to drive other systems rather than simply having the heat dissipated through the radiator.

there were many questions posed by these two possibilities, how much energy are we putting in, compared to how much energy we are taking out? what assumptions are we making? what would we use the energy for? to charge the battery more efficiently? or perhaps run something else in the car.

the possibilities for experimentation are wide, and Dr Gietman is looking into the availability of the laboratories so that our team can decide what sort of experiments are possible and what sort of equipment they can use. Dr Gietman suggested the modelling of car temperatures using hot plates, but also with actual vehicles, offering his own car for the purpose. the temperatures of which could be measured using thermal cameras, bot still cameras and video.

the next step for our team is to do some research:

• what’s holding the water?

• what materials would be needed?

• what is the thermal conductivity of these materials?

• what are the physical properties of these materials? they have to be strong, stable and not melt at the temperatures generated by a car engine.

the challenge continues.

if you would like to take part in the 7th Brainstem innovation Challenge in second semester, simply ask your science teacher or mr Coventry (science Coordinator) in the science office (801) and you can go on the list!

StudEnt SErvicES Please see below a link to a very informative and interesting podcast about understanding Anxiety in young People - by Prof Jennie Hudson.

what is it about?

Knowing that anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness among children and young people, what can we do to better support those with the condition? should children be taught about anxiety? Find out strategies that can help children cope with anxiety, what parents can do and where to find further resources and support.

more and more we are helping so many of our young people deal with Anxiety, i am often working in partnership with Families, Psychologists and teachers to support a young person to understand where anxiety comes from and how to manage anxious feelings and when to know if it is clinical anxiety or just normal every day anxiety.

Please follow the link and have a listen, i’m sure you will find it helpful.
