MHEA Art ContestAn "Evening of the Arts"

Friday, August 17Our first big event of the 2018/2019 school year is only a little over two weeks away! The 2018 MHEA Art Contest will be on Friday, August 17 at Faith Baptist Church, 3755 N. Germantown Rd., Bartlett. Details about the time schedule and a complete description of the rules can be found on page 7 of this newsletter.

Following in the footsteps of last year's success, we will again showcase the talents of some of our MHEA artists and musicians during the art viewing. If you have an in-strumental or vocal solo piece that you would like to perform, or have a musical group that would be interested in performing several songs, please contact Stacy Loftis at [email protected].

We would also like to showcase some of our students' culinary talents. Any student who has a business or fundraising mission within the culinary arts and would like to offer items for sale during this year’s event, please contact Shannon Bellamy at [email protected] for more detailed information.

Remember that you must be a CURRENT MHEA member to participate in any portion of this event.

If you have any questions please contact Shannon Bellamy at [email protected]. Hope to see you there!

It’s Time for School Pictures! Are you new to homeschooling? Or have you homeschooled “forever”??? MHEA offers many extras you may not know about. One such benefit is school picture days. The yearbook staff arranges for Shelby Images to come and take pictures of our students. These pictures are good for giving to family, for chronicling school years, and for inclusion in the yearbook. Also, there will be an option to have a GROUP PICTURE of all your students together after individual pictures are taken. Tell your friends.....THIS IS A FABULOUS OPPORTUNITY with great package prices (a sample form can be found on our website, MyMHEA.org, click the “School Pictures” link in the “What’s Happening Now” section). Write this date on your calendar, and come have your student’s picture made. Don’t miss it!!!

Thursday, September 20, 2:00 - 4:00 pmCollierville Bible Church, 806 Wolf River Blvd., Collierville, TN 38017

Additional picture dates and locations will be announced soon!

Would your group be able to provide a location for an additional picture day? We want to provide as many dates and locations as possible, but need your assistance! Contact Karen Bateman at [email protected] if you can help.

***PLEASE NOTE: ONLY pictures taken at official school picture dates can be used on the student panel pages in the yearbook. Please bring your students to one

of the school picture dates so you don’t miss out!

Opportunities for students to get to know one another, serve, and share about themselves will be incorporated into the club meetings. Students will learn camaraderie, sportsmanship, teamwork, and will have opportunities to display the Fruit of the Spirit.

NEEDS UPDATING

Welcome to the 2018-2019 School YearWayne Addison, MHEA President

As President of MHEA, I congratulate everyone on beginning the new school year, and I welcome new families to MHEA. If your family is homeschooling for the first time, welcome to an exciting journey! We want to be a resource to you during that journey. Our website, MyMHEA.org, provides up-to-date, timely information designed to serve as your primary source of MHEA information. Please make checking the website a part of your normal routine. MHEA/THEA continues to lead the way with their influence and guidance on legislative activity that impacts the homeschool community. This upcoming school year is expected to be an uncertain legislative agenda at the State Capital. We must remain diligent in defending the rights and privileges we have earned from those who so tirelessly worked before us, in order to protect those same rights and privileges for our children for years to come. The ability for MHEA/THEA to monitor and advocate legislative activity that protects the rights to homeschool in Tennessee only happens through the support generated by MHEA memberships. Our vision is to provide useful, valuable, and relevant resources and information to our member families; and your Administrative Board is ready to serve you. Our Activities Committee is hard at work, but always needs good people to help support and organize some of these great activities. The MHEA Board would also like to formally thank all of the volunteers who served countless hours this past year. As a volunteer-based organization, nothing happens without the assistance of those willing to sacrifice for the benefit of others. In closing, Suellen and I are honored to have the opportunity once again to serve you and your family. It is a responsibility that we welcome, but we cannot do it alone. I truly believe that the best days are ahead of us. Please stand with us to support the families around the Memphis area and beyond. May the Lord bless you and your family throughout the upcoming school year.

HiS Choir Announces New Rehearsal Time John McWhorter, Director

To all MHEA members: Did you know that MHEA has a junior/senior high choir? In my 21 years of directing it, I have been amazed at the number of people who didn’t know the choir existed. I hope that this news will make the rounds of the MHEA membership, and that you will send your youth to the choir. For those of you who did know about HiS Choir, but had conflicts with the rehearsal time, be advised that the rehearsal time is changing! Rehearsals for the Christmas concert will begin on Thursday, September 6; and our new rehearsal time is 12:00 - 2:00 pm (to 2:30 pm for Ensemble members). Rehearsals are held at First Evangelical Church, 735 Ridge Lake Blvd., Memphis. Membership in the choir requires students to be in 7th to 12th grade, be members of MHEA, and dues of $20.00 per student, each semester. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected], or at 901-292-4260.

This May Be Your LAST NewsletterIf you have not renewed your 2018-19 MHEA membership this WILL BE your last newsletter!

All MHEA memberships expire in July of every year so if you have still not renewed, your name will be dropped from the mailing list.

Why should you pay to join MHEA? What will MHEA membership do for you? Where exactly do our MHEA funds go? The following are just some of the benefits/answers to these questions:

The membership fee goes a long way to provide information, activities, and protection for your family. It covers such things as:

• The website and bi-monthly newsletter- News & Views - are the main forms of information for all members of MHEA. News & Views may be received in hard copy or viewed online at the website. We also have a Facebook page and Constant Contact to give us the ability to keep our member families informed.

• A local office with part-time staff to provide assistance as needed.

• Special services and events are provided at the local level, such as the Used Book Sale, Homeschool Expo, Achievement Testing, High School Connections, maintaining our website, homeschool resources, and much more (browse the website to see many of the events and activities provided by MHEA).

• Local networking opportunities are available through participating activity groups such as HiS Choir, ETA Honor Society, SWAT Speech and Debate, and Yearbook Staff, as well as support groups which offer opportunities for co-op classes, field trips, holiday parties, etc. for students, and encouragement for parents.

• Opportunities to participate in a variety of sports teams, many of which excel at the national level (listing of available sports can be found under the Sports tab on the website).

• A graduation ceremony and banquet for MHEA homeschool graduates.

MHEA membership also gives you automatic membership in THEA, which is Tennessee’s state-wide homeschool association. THEA benefits Tennessee homeschoolers by monitoring legislation and following court battles involving homeschoolers, and hosting periodic exhibits and receptions for legislators, as well as hosting the annual Homeschool Rally Day in Nashville each April. THEA serves as a liaison between homeschool families and public officials, and provides representation at local, state-wide, and even national homeschool meetings. In addition, THEA coordinates a state-wide homeschool support network through its eight chapters.

MHEA membership is open to all homeschoolers, regardless of personal beliefs. Once you join, membership cards will be provided for you and your spouse; hang on to those cards, as they are valuable! Your membership number is needed on your correspondence, checks, and registration forms. Also, most MHEA events throughout the year are for card-carrying members only. Teacher discounts are also available at some merchants - just present your MHEA card.

To renew your membership go to www.MyMHEA.org and click on the “Online Registration & Benefits of Membership” box at the bottom of the home page, or fill out and mail the registration form found on page 19 of this newsletter.
