St Damian’s Nativity and Christmas Carols Performance
PAGE 2
PLEASE NOTE: SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS IS BETWEEN 8.30am and 3.30pm ON SCHOOL DAYS.
From the Principal Second Sunday of Advent
On the second Sunday of Advent, the second purple candle, is lit. This candle represents love. As the journey of Advent continues, as we prepare to celebrate the nativity of Christ, John the Baptist's call to conversion sounds out in our communities. John the Baptist is presented to us as a model during Advent. We, too, are called upon to prepare a way for the Lord. Like John the Baptist, we are messengers in service to one who is greater than we are. Our Baptism commissions us to call others to life as disciples of Jesus. St Damian’s Carols and Performance Thank you to all our families for your support last night at the Carols. How fortunate were we with the weather after such a wet and miserable weekend. It’s a testament to the installers of our synthetic turf how well they know their product. After such torrential and constant rain, the oval was dry and ready for our evening. I congratulate our students for their presentation last night and thank all the staff, especially Miss Scott, Ms Lorkin and Mrs McCarthy and for all their work to ensure we all enjoyed a wonderful evening.
School Sports We are hoping that this Friday 8
th December, we will be able to hold our School Sports as these have had to be cancelled
due to previous storms being forecast. We look forward to a great day on Friday. Parents and families are always welcome to join us.
Volunteer Thank You Morning Tea Next Wednesday at 11am we will be hosting out Volunteer Thank You Morning Tea. We invite any parents who have assisted our students and staff throughout 2017 to join us for morning tea in the Open Area. We are looking forward to showing our appreciation of all the work you have done. Please see the invitation included in this newsletter. Final Assembly for the Year The final assembly for the year will be held on Monday 18
th December at 9.00am in the school hall. At this assembly all
the student leaders for 2018 will be announced as well as special presentations made to some of the students. During this assembly we also farewell staff, students and families who are leaving St Damian’s at the end of the year. All families are most welcome to join us.
Staff News As you are all aware we will be saying farewell to some of our staff at the end of the year. We will be saying goodbye to Mrs Aoife McCarthy who, after seven years at St Damian’s, will be going to St John’s School in Footscray as Deputy Principal. I have personally worked alongside Aoife in the past three years and have come to know a very dedicated and hard-working professional who always has the students’ wellbeing and learning at the forefront of everything she does. As a community we will definitely miss Aoife. Her sense of humour, her wisdom and her support of staff and community are qualities we will remember of her. We thank Aoife for all she has done and contributed to St Damian’s and congratulate her on her appointment. St John’s is very fortunate to have her join their community. We also farewell Mrs Michelle Orlebar, who has been co-teacher with Aoife in the past couple of years. Michelle is a very experienced teacher, who gives of herself very generously. Her care and concern for the students is evident in the way she goes about her work. Michelle is also a very accommodating professional, who does not hesitate to help when asked, especially proven this year when she stepped into the Prep classroom to ensure that these students had their entry into school disrupted as little as possible given the circumstances. St Damian’s school has been the richer due to Michelle and we sincerely thank her for her work and commitment. Michelle has taken up a new appointment as part-time classroom teacher at St Claire’s Primary School, Thomastown in 2018. We wish her every success. We also farewell Mrs Annette Hodgson at the end of the year. Annette has only been with us for a short time, stepping in to job-share with Mrs Danielle DiStefano when Mrs Cris Brewer took maternity leave at the end of last year. In the time that Annette has been here at St Damian’s she has been very committed to the wellbeing of the students in her care. Her capable and professional manner has ensured that the students have thrived. We thank her for all her dedication and hard work and wish her every success in the future.
Orientation Session These sessions will occur next week, Wednesday and Thursday and are an opportunity for students to spend some time with their new class and teacher for 2018. It is probably an opportune time for parents to chat with their children about the positives of transitioning into new classrooms and experiencing new teachers and new friendships. It is always important to focus on the positives to help students understand that change is not necessarily a bad thing and can provide many opportunities to build new friendships, start afresh and to experience personal growth.
Prayer for the Week – Behold the Lord will come . John [the Baptist] knows that God is preparing something very great.

Sports Day Tomorrow. Students to wear sports uniform and house colours.
Brothers Sean D and Ciaran D have both qualified to play individual events and also represent Team Victoria in the National Snooker & Billiards Championships to be held in Adelaide from the 7th January to 12th January 2018. Ciaran will then compete in the Under 12 individual competition and then for Team Victoria in the National Eight Ball Cham-pionships which is also in Adelaide from 15th January to 20th January 2018. Unfortunately Sean did not qualify for Team Victoria but he is hoping that he may get a wild card entry into the Under 15 individual event. We wish them both the best of luck in their events and for what will be a busy holiday period for their family. Tim Watson Physical Education Coordinator

St Damian’s Fete 2018
We are super excited to announce that the St Damian’s Fete will be held on Sunday 4 March 2018! This signature event will be the highlight of term 1 next year. It will not only be a fun-filled day, but a major fundraising event for the school and parish. Our Fete Committee is working hard behind the scenes to organise a fantastic day for our community, including
rides, stalls, amazing food and entertainment. The success of this event will be heavily dependent on the contribution of our school and parish community, whether it be as a volunteer on the day or through donations, so stay tuned for more
information in the coming weeks on how you can get involved. If you are interested in volunteering, please arrange your Working with Children’s’ check now.
