THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2010 UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA NEWS FOR USA EMPLOYEES Midweek memo USA Faculty Development Council Forum to be held March 8-11 Faculty and graduate students will showcase their research, scholarly and creative projects at the 17th Annual USA Faculty Development Council Forum, which will feature a speaker as well as book and poster displays, March 8-11 in the Student Center Lobby. Dr. Matthew T. Huss, professor at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., will lecture on “Not All Forensic Science is Created Equal: The Role of Forensic Psychology” on March 9 at 1 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. Huss will focus on the significant problems stemming from the increasing popularity of forensic science in both the mass media and the courtroom, and he will talk about “the so-called science admitted into courtrooms across the country.” “A specific area of forensic science, forensic psychology is also becoming increasingly popular and suffers from some of the same sensationalistic expectations,” said Huss. “However, there are aspects of forensic psychology that are both intuitively appealing and exhibit significant empirical support. Psychopathy is one area of special interest that will be explored in terms of its empirical basis and implications within the legal system.” Huss received his master’s degree in legal studies and his doctorate in psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His research interests include law and psychology and forensic-clinical psychology with primary interests on the prediction of violence, domestic violence and sex offenders. He is also interested in how jurors perceive insanity and the admissibility of scientific evidence. Huss has written more than 50 different scholarly presentations and a textbook on forensic psychology, “Forensic Psychology: Research, Practice, and Applications.” In 2000, Huss co-wrote “Aggression and Violent Behavior” with Dr. Jennifer Langhinrichsen- Rohling, professor in the USA department of psychology. The paper focused on the identification of the psychopathic batterer and the clinical, legal and policy implications. Following Huss’ lecture, refreshments and dialog with research forum participants will be held at the forum displays in the Student Center Lobby. The forum display is a celebration of the extensive and diverse contributions of all the University’s disciplines. It also gives the public and the University community an opportunity to talk with faculty from across the campus about their work and to take a look at the breadth of talent at USA. Last year, USA faculty generated more than $37 million in external contract and grant funding. This allows USA to be involved in a wide range of important issues, including improving science and math education in public schools, making advances in health care, protecting the environment and coastline, exploring alternative fuel sources, and many others. The deadline for poster and book applications has been extended to March 1. For more information about the forum, contact De Patterson at (251) 460-6310.
