companies from the manufacturing sector making up half of these being Burts Potato Chips Limited, Cmos-tores.com Limited and Centek Hold-ings Limited. Pen Y Cymoedd Wind Farm Limited has had the biggest impact out of the new entries, surg-ing up to 65th in its first year.

The Range continue to show that they are the largest employer in Devon and Cornwall, with a 4,000-employee lead on the next largest employer. Their latest accounts show employee numbers at 9,524, followed by Devonport Royal Dockyard Limited with 5,515. With 20% of the top 150 employing

more than 500 employees across 12 key industry sectors, the diversity and stability of employment in the region is readily evident.

Based on the companies regis-tered office, the top 150 are divided Devon (77%) and Cornwall (23%) which is an identical split to 2018. Devon’s contribution to total turno-ver for the current year is £11.4 bil-lion, a 5% increase on last year whilst Cornwall’s total turnover contribu-tion for 2019 is £2.6 billion, which has increased by 7% on last year.

There are 17 different key industry sectors included in the top 150 which displays the variety of suc-

cessful businesses in Devon and Cornwall.

Wholesale and retail has the most significant contribution at 41%, with The Range, Helston Garages Group Limited and Mole Valley Farmers Limited leading the sector.

Manufacturing accounts for 24% of the top 150, including Devonport Royal Dockyard Limited, Dunbia (UK) and Norbord Europe Limited.

The third biggest sector is property and construction at 9%, with Midas Group Limited and Corserv Limited leading the way.

Other key industry sectors include business services (5%), transport,

collective £14 billion in turno-ver in 2019, a 6% increase on

last year with revenues ranging from £1.4 billion (2018: £1.35 billion) to £23 million (2018: £20 million). En-couragingly 47% of the top 150 have seen increases in their turnover by 10% or more on the prior year.

Pennon Group plc (South West Water and Viridor) tops the list and remains a clear leader in terms of turnover, followed by Norton Group Holdings Limited (CDS Superstores International Limited – The Range) with Flybe Group plc making up the top 3.

Total employment by the top 150 stands at 75,000 (2018: 73,000) with the top 20 contributing over half of this with 39,000 employees. There has been some movement in the top 20 with Norbord Europe Limited, RNO Limited (Princess Yachts) and Midas Group Limited all climbing two places, but there have been no new entries.

There is a trend between the amount of revenue generated per employee and the sector. Wholesale and retail, manufacturing and prop-erty and construction generally have the highest revenue generated per employee, with health and social work, and leisure and tourism hav-ing the least.

As always, the top 150 analysis provides a good summary of the leading companies in our growing region, but it does not give a full reflection on business and employ-ment. The list does not consider the impact of businesses that employ large numbers locally but are based (registered office address) outside of Devon and Cornwall. We have also not considered the significant influ-ence the public sector and not-for-profit organisations have on employ-ment in the region which are themselves cornerstones of life in the South West.

PKF FrAncis clArK mArKeT shAre reveAledThe Top 150 companies list gives a fascinating view of the business landscape in Devon and Cornwall. PKF Francis Clark have a number of reasons to celebrate their contribution to the region including:

■ Fee growth of 8% moves them up a place to 81st position

■ An even better showing when listed by number of employees (27th), with now over 600 people

■ Largest market share of audit services

It is this last point that is perhaps the most revealing. PKF Francis Clark audited 36 of the top 150, three times more than the next regional firm. Whilst the scale of PKF Francis Clark is a significant growth story in itself, the main benefits to the region include:
