Principals Report

This term is flying by and students have engaged in lots of activities and learning. Students have been involved in Education Week, a NED mindset incursion, Book Week, NAIDOC Day, Science Week, athletics carnival, Fizzics incursion and much more. Ms Ortega had a pre-planned holiday booked prior to becoming principal of Lansvale East PS and I am the relieving principal until she returns at the beginning of next term. Please know that myself and staff at Lansvale East PS are here to support our students and their families. If you have concerns or suggestion, don’t hesitate to arrange meetings with your child’s classroom teacher, myself or Ms Ortega when she returns. Below is an online link to a parent survey we are asking parents to complete in a bid to gain valuable input about school improvement. We hope our families will work together with us and complete a very short (3 question) survey. Teachers will be out in the mornings next week asking parents to complete this survey.

We thank our parents in advance for assisting us with this task.

On the 22nd August, presenters of The NED Show came to Lansvale East and presented to our students about the importance of having resilience to overcome challenges. All students were amazed at the amazing yo-yo techniques, were encouraged to change their mindset when challenged and are demonstrating encouragement towards one another in the school.

Thursday, 12th September was R U OK Day? Please take some time to look after yourselves, check in with each other or come and have a chat with me. We’re all in this together! I wish our students and their families a very relaxing weekend.

Mrs. K Haggett

Parent Workshop

Parent Conduct on School Grounds

Just a reminder that when you are on school grounds to conduct yourself in line with departmental expectations. The Inclosed Lands Protection Act 1901 states that all persons are to act in an appropriate and reasonable manner that would not be considered offensive to another person. This includes swearing, discussing matters of concern on the playground, approaching or discussing other children. The Smoke Free Environment Act 2000 also prohibits the use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes at enclosed public places including schools and childcare facilities. We appreciate your support in not smoking on school grounds.

Zone Athletics

On Monday 9th of September, 28 students along with Miss Kerwick, Mr Salam and Mr Ben, travelled to the Crest Athletics Field to compete in Zone Athletics. The day started early with 3 of our competitors taking part in the 1500m track event. Well done to Brooke Challenor, Laisa Cagiloaloa and Deniliquin Palelei for giving this event a terrific effort. Some of our other events included the 100m, 200m and 800m track races, high jump, long jump, discus and shot put as well as team relays to finish off the day. Despite battling against strong winds and racing in the rain, all students competed with 100% effort and big smiles on their faces. It was great to see all students encouraging our team as well as other schools and this sportsmanship should be commended. Lastly, a special congratulations to Brooke Challenor, Dajetikai Pelelei and Sala Tamati on qualifying for Regional Athletics which happened today, good luck!

E-Safety

There are many benefits to socialising and playing games online — it can be entertaining and educational, while helping to build digital intelligence skills. However, games or apps with a chat function mean your child is likely to be communicating with others online, including strangers.

Research shows it is more common than you think, with one in four young people being contacted by someone they don’t know online.

Contact from strangers can make children feel uncomfortable or lead to dangerous situations like harassment or “grooming” — where a young person is lured into trusting a sexual predator online.

So just as we help guide young people to identify unsafe behaviour in the physical world, we need to do the same in their online world – for example, helping them to understand when it's not appropriate to chat to an adult without a parent around.

Talking with your children about their ‘online friends’ can be a great way to help develop their skills around identifying and dealing with unwanted contact.

What do you think makes a good online friend?

How do you know if an online friendship has taken an unsafe turn?

Who would you talk to if you felt unsafe online?
