NEWSLETTER
THURSDAY 13th JUNE 2019
Dear Families,
Today’s Newsletter doesn’t follow the usual structure because Nicole is currently away. Sadly I have to report that Nicole’s mother passed away on Tuesday afternoon, she had been ill for a relatively short period of time and her passing has come as a great shock to Nicole and her family.
Given the very significant role that Nicole plays in the life of our school and the relationships that she has built up over her years at St.John Vianney’s this has come as a great shock and sadness to the staff.
The funeral is planned for next Tuesday at Bunurong Park at 11:30am. Given the time of day for the funeral and the fact that all staff are wanting to attend I have been considering how to manage the school on that day. Logistically staff would need to leave school at around 10:40am and probably not return until around 1:20pm. After much consideration I believe that the most appropriate way that I can deal with this event is to close the school for the day.
I understand that this will cause an inconvenience for some families and I am genuinely apologetic for that but I wouldn’t be suggesting this action if I didn’t think that you as a parent group would understand and support why I am doing this.
I have spoken with our Before & After School Care Providers and they will run a full day program here, this will cost $30 per child (our provider is providing this care at a subsidised price because of the situation) but obviously they will not be able to accommodate all of our students and if you wish to use this program you would need to register in the normal manner. For those who won’t be using the Before & After Care I hope that you might be able to provide assistance to each other, if required.
Events such as this are times of great sadness but they are also times that show the strength and living example of our community. Again I apologise for any inconvenience that this action may cause but as I said above, I wouldn’t have suggested this action if I didn’t think that you as a parent group would support it. At this stage I do not know when Nicole will be returning to work.
St.John Vianney’s School will be closed on Tuesday 18th June 2019.

FATHER MICHAEL’S MESSAGE
We Care – Catholics Responding to the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act.
Dear Friends
On next Wednesday, 19 June 2019, the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act (VAD) comes into effect in Victoria. It legalises euthanasia and assisted suicide.
Should you wish to inform yourself of the implications, a letter from all the bishops in Victoria is on the front page of the parish website. Printed copies are available in the narthexes of the churches.
From the earliest times, Christ’s followers have set themselves apart by their care of the vulnerable (Acts 4:34). Today, in Victoria there are numerous Catholic hospitals and hospices.
Close by are Villa Maria Catholic Homes opposite the school gate, Calvary Palliative Care in Como Parade West, Parkdale, Mercy Health in Mentone, Mordialloc and Sandringham, Cabrini in Brighton, Prahran and Malvern.
Elsewhere, campuses of St Vincent’s Health Care and St John of God Health Care indefatigably serve the sick and dying.
In all of these campuses, euthanasia and assisted suicide are never part of end of life care.
Despite what the law may say, our Christian tradition affirms that every life, including those of the sick and suffering, is sacred.
All Catholic facilities provide effective pain management and respect patients’ (or their medical attorneys’) decisions to forgo treatments that are too burdensome or medically futile.
3
Our bishops object to the lack of adequate funding for excellent palliative care. They object to the lazy idea that the best response our community can offer a person in acute suffering is to end their life. They object to state-‐sponsored practices that facilitate suicide.
Pope Francis has encouraged ordinary Catholics everywhere to resist euthanasia and to protect the old, the young and the vulnerable from being cast aside in a “throw-‐away culture.”
All of us who hold a principled opposition to euthanasia are now conscientious objectors.
All of us can do something to reverse this sad day. We are called to follow Christ by accompanying people with compassion, sharing hope not fear. We will not abandon those we love.

Vinnies Winter Appeal Fundraiser
Hi Kids!
The Social Justice group have organised a Winter Chillout Movie Day for
Wednesday June the 26th. You can bring a pillow, sleeping bag or a teddy
bear if you wish.
This day is to raise awareness and money for people who are homeless or
live without things that we have, which are vital during Winter, like heating,
a warm bed and proper meals.
Please bring a gold coin donation to support the Vinnies Winter Appeal. The
main condition is that during the movie there will be no heating, allowing
people to experience being cold during the winter, because there are people
on our planet that are not as fortunate as us.
If you wish, you may bring snacks such as popcorn or chips but please don’t
go overboard.
It’s going to be a fun day!
James Day & Aiden Rocks Talbot A letter from Kobe Donovan Re:Basketball Tournament
Hi all, I'm really excited to tell you about my awesome weekend playing basketball. So in my rep team (SANDRINGHAM SABRES) we got an invite to the 'National Junior Classic' tournament. Only 16 teams got selected in the whole of Australia and we were one of them. We were lucky that we didn't have to fly to Western Australia or Queensland, we got to play at Dandenong.
Our first game was on Saturday at 12:30 PM and we played the Sydney Comets. It was a good game. There was one player for their team that stood out only because of his size though. We won that game by about 15 points at least. I scored 4 of those points.
6
Our next game was at about 2:00 and we were up against Kilsyth. We'd won against them before but this game wasn't like the one we played a few tournaments ago. We didn’t play very well. We only lost by 3(somehow) but it was really intense, but fun. On Sunday we played at 8:30 AM!!! I was so tired when we played that game . We played Southern Tigers. we started off pretty good but they stayed with us. It was points after points after points and than we finally took the lead by 10. In the last quarter they had a come back and we were only up by 1 little point. There was 10 seconds left and they fouled us. My friend missed both his 2 shots and they got the rebound!!! They dribbled up the court and then they stopped and shot but it missed by a long way and then we won by 1!!! YAY Later on Sunday we versed Mckinnon and we were leading for most of the game but the last half we THRASHED them. I think we won by about 25 points at least. After the game we celebrated and had chicken for dinner. Monday was the toughest day of all. We played Bulleen Bull-its. We were the underdogs to them and we needed the win so we could go to the finals. It was rough, tiring and emotional. The last quarter was so intense. With the last 30 seconds we were down by 1. We fouled them and they made both 2 shots. I dribbled up the court with 10 seconds left and I passed it to my team mate. He shot it from the 3 point line.... but he MISSED! So we lost but I wasn't too disappointed because that ment we're in the top 8 teams in Australia. Later that day we played Casey and this was our last game. We were playing for the 5th spot. We started off good. I got the first 2 points and than I made a big 3. It was going really well. We ended up winning by 14 points!! So that means we we're the 5th best team in Australia.
We were really PROUD of ourselves. We celebrated by having a GREAT dinner and than we went home and had a good and big rest. So that is how my long weekend went. I hope you enjoyed reading this. From Kobe Donovan
