SITUATION
Thurston end hall is tucked away in the rolling Suffolk countryside in a small rural hamlet on the edge of the quintessential english village of
hawkedon. A designated Conservation Area, hawkedon is set around a village green and has a number of interesting medieval buildings, including
the 15th Century church and an award winning public house, The Queen’s head, which is very much at the centre of the rural community.
Thurston end hall offers easy access to many favoured Suffolk towns and villages including Clare (6 miles), Bury St edmunds (10 miles) and
Lavenham (11 miles), which are thriving local centres offering a range of shopping, cultural and recreational amenities. The city of Cambridge is 27
miles away with its world-leading university, well-regarded schools and science and technology parks. newmarket, the home of British horseracing is
14 miles away.
Stansted Airport is 30 miles away and both the A14 dual carriageway and M11 motorway are easily accessible for travel to London and further afield.
HISTORY
In his ‘Buildings of england’ Pevsner describes Thurston end hall as ‘quite a showpiece’- an accurate portrayal and the clear intention of its 15th and early 16th Century inhabitants. The hall is a superb example of a moated Tudor manor house and is believed to date from the late 15th Century with three sets of subsequent alterations. The hall is constructed on a brick base with a timber frame and exposed external studs in-filled with herringbone brickwork under a tiled roof. In his book ‘In search of the Perfect house, 500 of the best buildings in Britain and Ireland’ Marcus Binney points out that there is no attempt at precise symmetry; the gables are all of varying size and the timbers are close set, a clear sign of wealth.
The house is also detailed in eric Sandon’s ‘Suffolk houses – a study of domestic architecture’. Of particular note is the massive great hall chimney stack which has a set of blind castellations and is ‘tumbled-in’ in successive setbacks to a square with four tall ornamental shafts, each with hand-moulded brick patterns, above a ‘diamond-patterned frieze’. The three-storey porch is believed to have been added in 1607, this date being carved upon the ornate bressumer which adorns the porch itself.
The house was the subject of a restoration in the early 20th Century, with the addition of the delightful scalloped bargeboards on the gables and the carved woodwork embellishments to the porch. These have an acorn motif and feature Ceres, with her garland of corn, dolphins, cherubs and lion heads, and may have come from the family pew in the church. There is some matching carved woodwork in the ground floor snug, an elaborate carving on the main beam and corkscrew columns either side of the fireplace decorated with oak twigs and acorns.
Internally Thurston end hall retains much of its exquisite period character including exposed beams, panelling, two oak staircases and floorboards.
The property has had a number of interesting occupants over the years and from 1552 was vested in the everard family who were responsible for the 1607 alterations. One of the most famous visitors to the house was Will Kemp, who along with Shakespeare was a founding and leading member of the Lord Chamberlain’s men. he also helped to finance the building of the Globe Theatre and was cast in key roles in many of Shakespeare’s plays.
Finally the couple who probably carried out the latest alterations in the 1920s had royal connections, France-Doucha Garden being a direct
descendent of Caroline Bonaparte and the King of naples.

The house is entered via an entrance porch with ornate carving dated
1607 and gates with barley twist spindles. From here a heavy oak door

inglenook fireplace with a raised brick hearth and panelling above. There
are attractive exposed fluted beams, a pine floor and doors to the inner
hall.
From the inner hall the secondary (believed to be original) staircase rises
to the first floor and there is access through to the study with a range of
built in bookcases, exposed pine floor and beams and a leaded window

additional ornate carving to the central beam.
