Congratulations on making it through the most difficult part of
your journey to China!
Time to start packing!
REALLY IMPORTANT
There are a few things you MUST bring with you to China.
1. Passport (It would almost be funny if you forgot this.)
2. All original documents used for obtaining your visa
(degree, police background check, medical, Authentication
papers, TEFL certificate)
3. 6 passport style photos with a white background
4. Debit/credit cards and any Chinese currency you already
have (I recommend bringing around 5000 RMB/ 800 USD)
5. Work pants and shoes (see a sample uniform on the next
page)
14 | P a g e
Tianjin
• We’ll provide you with EF shirts for
winter and summer.
• You’ll need to get long khaki pants to
bring with you and black or brown shoes.
Just like in this picture.
15 | P a g e
Tianjin
Other items to consider bringing
• Photos of friends and families-all cords you will need for electronic devices
• Outlet converters
• Over the counter medicine (for cold, flu, cough, allergy, headaches, etc.) China has pharmacies, but it is nice to have something you are familiar with when you are sick.
• It will be summer time when you arrive. That means it will be hot and rainy!
• Here is a link to the extended weather forecast for Tianjin. https://www.accuweather.com/en/cn/tianjin/106780/weather-forecast/106780
Uniforms
• Teachers are required to wear khaki/beige colored pants, the provided EF shirt, lanyard, and dark, closed toe shoes. EF will provide the shirts and lanyard and teachers need to bring the appropriate shoes and pants.
• I have attached a photo of Yuppy and Tom modeling the uniforms.
• I have also attached a size chart, please help me select your size for uniform.
Outlets
• The below link has a lot of useful information regarding outlets and electricity in China.
16 | P a g e
Tianjin
• https://www.travelchinaguide.com/essential/electricity.htm
• I also recommend getting an universal adapter. They are sold at places like Target and Walmart in the travel aisles.
VPN
• A VPN, or virtual private network, is a way to get access to everything you are used to accessing at home. Most of our international teachers have one, although some don't and are just fine without one. It just depends on your preferences.
• There are many companies that offer VPNs, but some of the most popular with the staff are Express (I use this one and you can use this link to get your first month free: https://www.expressrefer.com/refer-friend?referrer_id=14539549&utm_campaign=referrals&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=referral_dashboard), Vypr, and Astrill.
• After you find one you like, you pay for their services and download their app to whichever devices you would like to use.
• I suggest doing some research on this topic and decide what route is best for you.
Money
• There are several ways to have access to money when you first arrive. I advise you to do at least 2 of these options.
17 | P a g e
Tianjin
• Bring USD. If you are bringing USD, let me know how much. I will have your airport pick-up give you RMB in exchange for your USD.
• Ask your bank for RMB.
• Bring your Visa/Mastercard (you should do this anyways). You can use your foreign card at a Bank of China when you arrive.
Also
Don't forget to talk to the bank about moving to China (get someone you trust to be signatory for your bank) and unlocking your cell phone.
If you have any questions contact your recruitment
representative ASAP.
Once again, well done! You’ve been selected to be part of an
elite organization striving to open the world through education.
We look forward to having you with us.
