Research Projects Broadband Seismic Study of Lithospheric Structure of the Ordos Plateau 2012 - Present People have long regarded the Ordos Plateau as the stable remnant of the Archean North China Craton (NCC),whose eastern part has already undergone decratonization. However, applying a recently developed seismic technique called Virtual Deep Seismic Sounding (VDSS), in conjunction with traditional Receiver Function technique,to several broadband seismic data sets collected in Ordos, we see features in the lithosphere indicating that the Ordos Block might be undergoing decratonization right now, which offers us a chance study how and why cratons, the most long-living features on this planet, finally get destroyed. Helium Isotope Systematics Along Seismic Profiles to Study the Geometry of Indian and Asian Lithosphere beneath the Tibet Plateau 2014 - Present Although numerous seismic experiments have been carried out in Tibet in the past decades, the position and geometry of the "mantle suture" between Indian and Tibet lithosphere mantle still remains unclear because different seismic study have yielded very different results. Analysis of helium isotope collected at geothermal sites on the surface has been proven to be an effective way to study the status of the crust and mantle right beneath the sampling sites. By analyzing the helium isotope in geothermal fluid sampled along seismic profiles in Tibet, we are able to further evaluate lithosphere models, hence collision mechanism given by different seismic studies. This will help us have a better understanding of how the largest and highest orogen on this planet was created.
