TIBCO Product Description

TIBCO ActiveSpaces® TIBCO ActiveSpaces is a distributed peer-to-peer in-memory data grid, a form of virtual shared memory that leverages a distributed hash table with configurable replication.

TIBCO ActiveSpaces combines the features and performance of databases, caching systems, and messaging software to support large, highly volatile data sets and event-driven applications. It lets you off-load transaction-heavy systems and allows developers to concentrate on business logic rather than the complexities of developing distributed fault-tolerance.

Typographical Conventions

The following typographical conventions are used in this manual.

Table 2 General Typographical Conventions

Convention Use

code font Code font identifies commands, code examples, filenames, pathnames, and output displayed in a command window. For example: Use MyCommand to start the foo process.

bold code font Bold code font is used in the following ways:

• In procedures, to indicate what a user types. For example: Type admin.

• In large code samples, to indicate the parts of the sample that are of particular interest.

• In command syntax, to indicate the default parameter for a command. For example, if no parameter is specified, MyCommand is enabled: MyCommand [enable | disable].

italic font Italic font is used in the following ways:

• To indicate a document title. For example: See TIBCO Clarity Examples.

• To introduce new terms. For example: A portal page may contain several portlets. Portlets are mini-applications that run in a portal.

• To indicate a variable in a command or code syntax that you must replace. For example: MyCommand PathName.

Key combinations Key name separated by a plus sign indicate keys pressed simultaneously. For example: Ctrl+C.

Key names separated by a comma and space indicate keys pressed one after the other. For example: Esc, Ctrl+Q.

The note icon indicates information that is of special interest or importance, for example, an additional action required only in certain circumstances.

Table 3 Syntax Typographical Conventions

Convention Use

[ ] An optional item in a command or code syntax.

For example:

MyCommand [optional_parameter] required_parameter

| A logical OR that separates multiple items of which only one may be chosen.

For example, you can select only one of the following parameters:

MyCommand param1 | param2 | param3

{ } A logical group of items in a command. Other syntax notations may appear within each logical group.

For example, the following command requires two parameters, which can be either the pair param1 and param2, or the pair param3 and param4.

MyCommand {param1 param2} | {param3 param4}

In the next example, the command requires two parameters. The first parameter can be either param1 or param2 and the second can be either param3 or param4:

MyCommand {param1 | param2} {param3 | param4}

In the next example, the command can accept either two or three parameters. The first parameter must be param1. You can optionally include param2 as the second parameter. And the last parameter is either param3 or param4.

MyCommand param1 [param2] {param3 | param4}

2 | Chapter 1 Installation Introduction

Installation Overview

The TIBCO Universal Installer is used to install and uninstall TIBCO Clarity - Desktop Edition.

Installation ModesThree installation modes are available: GUI, console, and silent.

GUI Mode

In the GUI mode, the installer presents panels that allow you to select a product, product location, and so on. To invoke the installer in the GUI mode, double-click the executable.

Console Mode

In the console mode, you can run the installer on the command line. This is useful if your machine does not have a GUI environment.

Silent Mode

In the silent mode, the installer installs the product without prompting you for information. The installer uses either default or custom settings that are saved in a response file.

Installation EnvironmentAn installation environment isolates product installations. A product installed into an installation environment does not access components in other installation environments.

An installation environment is the top-level installation directory for TIBCO products. An installation environment consists of the following properties:

• Directory identifies the name of the directory where the product is installed. This directory is referred to as TIBCO_HOME.

• Name identifies the installation environment. On Microsoft Windows, the name is a component of the path to the product shortcut in the Windows Start > All Programs menu.

The location of the log file depends on the platform, as follows:

Windows

User_Home\.TIBCO\install_identifier

where identifier is the date and time the product is installed, and a unique number used to identify this particular installation.

For example:C:\Documents and Settings\franko\.TIBCO\install_03-02-2014.132827

Linux

$Home/.TIBCO/install_identifier

where identifier is the date and time the product is installed, and a unique number used to identify this particular installation.

For example:

/home/user1/.TIBCO/install_03-02-2014.134908

Mac OS

Users/user_home/.TIBCO/install_identifier

where identifier is the date and time the product is installed, and a unique number used to identify this particular installation.

For example:/Users/susieb/.TIBCO/install_03-02-2014.183398

In the silent mode, the installer does not prompt for any inputs during installation. Instead, the inputs are read from a response file that can be provided as a command-line parameter.

• If you invoke the installer with the -silent argument, the installer reads the input from default response file, which is TIBCOUniversalInstaller_clarity-dt.silent packaged in the directory that contains TIBCO Universal Installer.

• If you invoke the installer with the -silent -VresponseFile="responseFileName" argument, the installer reads the input from the specified response file.

To install TIBCO Clarity - Desktop Edition in the silent mode:

1. Navigate to the temporary directory to which you extract the installation package and open the TIBCOUniversalInstaller_clarity-dt.silent file.

2. Update the response file. Or make a copy of the response file and update the copied one.

3. Enter the following platform-specific command to the start the installation:

— On Microsoft Windows: TIBCOUniversalInstaller.cmd -silent [-V responseFile="filename"].

— On UNIX: TIBCOUniversalInstaller.platform_acronym.bin -silent [-V responseFile="filename"]

— On Mac OS: TIBCOUniversalInstaller-mac.command -silent [-V responseFile="filename"]

If you copy the response file to another directory, not the temporary directory containing the installer, you need to provide the absolute path of the response file.
