Back to school time already! How the year is flying by. For me, with 3 children (14, 13 & 9) the year is very much timetabled by school holidays. The next one is 8 weeks away!

I have been lucky enough to spend 2 great weeks in Cornwall this summer, enjoying the sunshine, relaxing on the beach, walking the cliff paths, cycling the Camel Trail and this year I have added a new activity; body boarding in the surf - I am even the proud owner of my own wet suit, although I did have to use one of my children’s cast off boards, perhaps I will have my own next year!

I hope that you enjoy this months magazine, please do get in touch if there is something that you would like to see in future editions.

Tickhill St Mary’s C of E Primary and Nursery School Olympic Finish to the end of the Summer Term 2012

The Olympics and sporting activities took over the last few weeks of term in July. The inclement weather forced our Olympic Opening Ceremony indoors, but our spirits were anything, but dampened. Each class wrote their own Olympic Oath and carried different country’s flags, having studied their country in all aspects from costume to cuisine.

Parents had the opportunity to join the children for themed dinners throughout our Olympic week. This was a great success with India being a clear favourite!

The weather interfered with our Olympic Sports Day, but only in that the activities were moved to the playground off the sodden grass, and modified accordingly. Lumley House (reds) were the clear winners on the day, and the sun shone on the children and their many supporters.

Years 3 and 4 visited local schools to compete in a dance workshop and basketball tournament respectively. The whole of Key Stage 1 had a very enjoyable day at Cannon Hall Farm, near Barnsley, and the whole hectic few weeks ended with the end of term discos, and a very emotional End of Year Service at St.Mary’s Church. Year 6 took centre stage and the rest of the school wished them well, as they move on to their respective secondary schools.

We’re all now having a much needed rest, in readiness for the start of the next academic year, which will start when school reopens at 8.50a.m. on Tuesday 4th September.

M ayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry Doncaster

To raise funds we enjoyed a pie and pea supper evening at Ye Olde Bell, Barnby Moor on the 7th July. What a fantastically entertaining evening this turned out to be. The Bruvvers Blue were brilliant. The food as usual was delicious and everyone had a terrific evening dancing the night away.

Many people donated raffle and auction prizes to help raise even more funds. Thank you to everyone. They included Jamps Cantonise Resturant Tickhill, JG Photography Harworth, Ye Olde Belle The Vulcan Team at Robin Hood Airport, Mulberries Spa Retford, Yorkshire Wild Life Park Bondhay Golf Club, Doncaster Super Bowl this was a small selection of people that supported us for anyone that I have not mentioned a BIG THANK YOU

Thank you also to Il Bello Venue Decorations from Harworth. At the drop of a hat they provided beautiful balloons for our table decorations, which were amazing.

Huge thanks also go to Bruvvers Blue for making the night go with such a bang. They also auctioned themselves to raise another £300. The final total was around £1700 raised so thank you for everyone that contributed.

If you had a great time we will be arranging something similar on the 17th November. So bring your party to our party and have a night to remember. Pet of the Month Hello my name is Pixie and I came into care with my little sister when we were just a few weeks old that is nearly a year ago. We were found abandoned in a field and would have died if some nice people hadn't found us. My sister went to her new home almost immediately, she was a different colour to me, as you can see I am all black but very cute and love to be cuddled. I don't know who named me Pixie but I hoped it would make me stand out from the rest of the residents. But its not to be I am still in my pen looking out into the big wide world trying to catch visitors attention ( I have heard that black cats don't get re homed because of their colour ) O K ! so I maybe black but I still have feelings and it makes me sad watching the pretty coloured cats go to their new homes and I am still here. Would someone please come and give me a home, I will be very good and be a perfect companion. We have some very loving cats and dogs, if you think you can give any of our residents a home, or if you would like to donate just £1 per month to our charity please call the Sanctuary on 01302 711330.

Mayflower Sanctuary is currently looking for a Kennel Manager.

Mayflower Sanctuary is a Rescue Centre that has been established since 2003. Its main aim is to rescue and rehome abused and abandoned dogs and cats.

Based at Bawtry, Doncaster and reporting to the Sanctuary Manager you will be responsible for the day to day supervision of staff, trainees and volunteers. It will also be your sole responsibility to ensure that the Sanctuary is adequately staffed each day and to manage the cleaning of the kennels, ensuring that everyone is adhering to procedures put in place as per Sanctuary policies.

We are looking for someone to join our established team who has the responsibility and the welfare of the animals at heart. It is essential that they have experience with animals and the kennel environment along with Managing a team.

The role is full time (37.5 hours). It requires the candidate to work a 5 day week; one of those days being either a Saturday or Sunday.

NEW CLASS LINE DANCING FOR BEGINNERS

AT CARLTON IN LINDRICK STARTING ON 5TH SEPTEMBER 2012

If you want to get more exercise, make new friends and dance why not come along to the Carlton in Lindrick Civic Centre on Wednesdays between 7pm and 10pm. If you haven’t danced before and want to give it a try then do come along to the brand new Beginners line dancing class starting at the Civic Centre on Wednesday 5 September 2012. The new Beginners class run will from 7pm to 8pm in the Civic Centre and is followed by existing classes for easy/intermediate. Line dance classes have been held at the Civic Centre for the last six years and are still going strong with dancers coming from all over the region. It is a very friendly class taught by David Birkinshaw who is a qualified BWDA and D&G teacher and has held line dancing classes and social evenings for 16 years. You are advised to wear normal shoes (not trainers) and bring your own drinks to classes. The music ranges from new country to the latest pop music and dancers can range from 8 to 80 years. Rossington Hall treat for St Leger race-goers!

Gary and Michelle Gee, owners of Doncaster’s newest luxury wedding, special occasion and fine dining venue Rossington Hall, are delighted to be sponsoring Doncaster Racecourse’s new Premier On The Lawn facility at this year’s Ladbrokes St. Leger Festival. TICKHILL AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB

As you all know we will have to wait until 2013 for the next Tickhill Gala. In the mean time you may be interested in the Doncaster Show which is being organised by the Doncaster Lions. The event takes place at the Deaf Trust Campus on Ledger Way on the weekend of 1st and 2nd September. The Doncaster Show is sure to be a fun-packed weekend where there will be activities to please everyone, from Archery to Zumba. The Tickhill and District Lions have been busy recently organising and running days out for senior citizens, including many who suffer from mobility problems and need assistance when away from their home environment. One of trips was for a group of Harworth senior citizens who enjoyed a day out in Harrogate.

The Lions support many local activities. Recently we have supported our local younger generation with donations to both the Tickhill Explorer Scouts, to help with their ‘Three Peak Challenge’ and to the Tickhill Juniors under 14’s football team allowing them to enter a district football competition.

Arts Review and What’s Going On September 2012 Hilary Cartmel

We’ve enjoyed a range of music festivals this summer. The kids (I use the term loosely) have been off to several including the Sheffield free festival ‘Tramlines’ 20 to 22 July which had music in every venue possible in the City, now in its third year and with a huge range on offer. Global Gathering where the dance music went on until 4 in the morning ( dance = not waltz or foxtrot) and Leeds Fest at Braham Park - always a fixture for our ‘kids’ will have come and gone by the time Today goes to print. Doncaster had its own free festival called MAP (Music and People) on 4th August. The local pubs in Harworth (Blacksmiths) and Scaftworth (King Willliam) have done one day festivals.

We – the oldies in the family went off for a weekend of Folk at Cambridge at the end of July. I did think we would fit in invisibly amongst the grey bearded sandal wearers – but this was not so. The age range was total and there were some brilliant young performers busking around the site and playing on the smaller and intimate stages. One, called the Front Room, was barely bigger than a family sized tent and complete with sofas and seating for about ten within its canvas walls, but with plenty of space on the grass outside. It’s a broad church, folk music, there was none of the stereotype finger-in-the-ear (and what’s wrong with several voices performing in tight harmony?) All performers wear earpieces and have wires coming out the backs of their heads now. We saw from one extreme to the other: virtuoso performances of electrified Irish and Scottish developments of slip-jigs and reels with almost 20 musicians on stage including electrified Northumbrian Pipes and bodhran to Billy Bragg celebrating the life and work of Woody Guthrie who believed that being able to play more than 2 chords on the guitar was showing off. A great atmosphere and good beer all added to the weekend and in Cambridge we were blessed with sunshine.

Very little beats live music or live performance. There will be plenty of live and local performances in the neighbourhood over the next few months, brought to you by TMS, The Rock, Village Ventures, Letwell Gigs and many more besides.

The second generation of solar power is here

Attention all log burners – Firewood Festival 30th September

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust manage over 70 nature reserves, the largest being the Idle Valley Nature Reserve just off North Road, (A638), Retford. One of the premium ancient woodland sites is Treswell Wood where many traditional woodland management methods and crafts are still practised - complimenting and supporting vital wildlife conservation on site.

The annual Firewood Festival held at Idle Valley Nature Reserve gives everyone a great opportunity to learn how traditional woodland management techniques create employment and opportunities to create natural products from the wood so that nothing is wasted, whilst at the same time protecting wildlife for the future and transferring ancient skills.

This year there will be even more demonstrations with the stunning logging horses, swedish logs, pole lathing, bentwood chair-making, chainsaw carving, log splitting and log burner displays. Learn how to make the most of your fuel and look after your log burner in an eco-friendly way, helping Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust to protect wildlife for the future at the same time.

What Fantastic A Level Results!

We are absolutely delighted with the success of our Sixth Form students again this year. They have achieved the highest percentage of grade ‘A’s ever at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College and there has also been pleasing improvement in the number of grade A-B passes.

There were many individual success stories including:

Emma Smith’s excellent effort which was rewarded with 1 A*, 4 As and 1B; she will be studying Psychology at the University of York. Alex Hill (3As and 1C) who will be studying Physics at the Royal Holloway University London. Tickhill’s own George Brookfield (2As, 1B and 1C) who will read Mechanical Engineering at the University of Aberdeen. The Year 13 students have chosen a variety of pathways to follow, from starting their careers in the workplace to continuing into higher education.

We are very proud of our students and their achievements at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College and we wish them every success in their future careers.

Fifty-three members were present at our meeting on August 9th. when Ron Marshall gave an illustrated talk about

"Harris and St. Kilda." Our next meeting will be on Thursday September 13th. at 7.30p.m. when Christine Robinson is coming to talk about "Getting Chatsworth Ready for Christmas." As we are proposing to visit Chatsworth in its Christmas Finery in November, this should be a very interesting evening.

The 25th Annual Show will be held in the Methodist Church and Schoolroom on Saturday 8th September. Schedules and entry forms are

Entry forms to be handed in at the Methodist Hall on Friday 7th September between 6.30pm and 9.30pm. This is more than just a Horticultural Show with craft, baking, needlework, art and photography classes for all age groups in addition to the fruit, flower and vegetable classes. This year's Show will also feature a 'Jubilee Pet Show' with just three classes :- 'Happiest Pet', - 'Scruffiest Pet', and 'Most Lovable Pet' to be judged by Mrs. Mary Beck. The Show will be opened at 2.00pm by Mr. Brian Leesing of Torne Valley Farm and Country Stores with the presentation of trophies at 4.00pm. We will be entertained by the Bramley Brass and Jazz Band throughout the afternoon and the Methodist Church will be decorated for the Harvest Festival to be celebrated the following day.

Charity calls for supporters to sleep rough for one night

Local charity SAFE@LAST is calling for participants to take part in The BIG Sleepout and sleep rough for one night so young runaways don’t have to.

The BIG Sleepout, SAFE@LAST’s signature event, is returning for the 5th year and to all four boroughs of South Yorkshire to raise funds and awareness of the charity’s work across the county. Since the first BIG Sleepout in 2007, over 1,000 people have taken part and slept rough for one night, raising over

£70,000 in the last five years.

The event helps to give participants an insight into what it could be like for the many thousands of young runaways who find themselves sleeping rough. Those taking part have to forgo all comforts for the night as they are only allowed basic items to keep warm such as a sleeping bag and cardboard box.

In order to continue their work and deliver vital services, SAFE@LAST has to fundraise and every penny raised through the BIG Sleepout will make a huge difference. This year the charity hopes to have over 500 participants sleeping rough across the four venues.

Fundraising Officer Barbara Raszyk commented “The BIG Sleepout provides a chance for us to highlight the struggles young runaways face and for people to have a small taste of what sleeping rough on the streets might be like. When children sleep rough they do it because they feel they have no other choice. They do it because they judge their other options as worse than a cold, lonely, dirty night on the streets. The money raised at these events will help us to continue to ensure that young people across South Yorkshire know they have a safer choice.”

This year’s events are Friday 28th September at Lakeside Village Doncaster, Friday 5th October at The Core Barnsley, Friday 12th October at Don Valley Stadium Sheffield and Friday 19th at Parkgate Shopping Rotherham.

FREDA JONES We wish to record the life of a beloved wife and mother, who fought bravely to the end to conquer cancer, but eventually passed away peacefully at St. John's Hospice on the 12th. June 2012. We also wish to thank the medical services who tried so hard to alleviate her ailment, carers, district nurses, surgery, hospital and hospice, who never gave up. A sum of £450 was collected and has been sent to her chosen charities, at the hospital and hospice, and we thank all those who gave so generously. Rest in peace my darling, Brian Jones, Peter Jones & Jenny Hosker. I would like to thank June and Roy Havenhand and the TRA team for another great Yorkshire Day Treasure Hunt which I am sure everyone enjoyed that took part. Wednesday 10th October at 6pm – 8.00pm there will be a bus parked on the Methodist car park; this is from the youth side of Mission Doncaster called Shine. Any 12-18year olds who would like to come along and see what’s on offer would be warmly welcome. This is an opportunity to have some fun, eat some food and chat with some of the Shine team.

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club It’s happened again! Your scribe is meant to put in a report on the club’s activities every three months which means that this report should have been in the July issue. However, just as last year a combination of my holidays, magazine closing dates and possibly a little ARF* means that this contribution will not appear until September. Never mind, hopefully many Probus members and potential Probus members have been on holiday too and my lapse will pass unnoticed.

All our meetings for the remainder of this year are listed below and if you think you might be interested in joining us come along to a meeting as a guest. Normally (i.e. except for the two meetings this September!) we meet at the Millstone on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 10.00 for 10.30 am. T ICKHILL NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN First and most important, thank you to all those who have filled in the Neighbourhood Plan questionnaire

distributed with the last edition of Tickhill Today. It isn’t too late if anyone still wants to send one in. Questionnaires are still available in the Library; we’d especially welcome more ideas from younger people.

There was a great deal in common in the responses, which were overwhelmingly positive. The community spirit, large number of organisations and annual events are much appreciated. Most of you seem very happy with Tickhill broadly as it is in size and environment, and value local shops and the protection of the Green Belt. It seems clear that you want the Neighbourhood Plan to protect what is best and to enhance it where possible.

We have, however, identified a number of areas where work will be done to bring forward ideas which could be included in the Plan. Initially we aim to have small groups working on these five areas: 1 Traffic and Road Safety, which produced the largest number of negative comments. 2 Car Parking 3 Communal facilities, where the need for public toilets and concerns about opportunities for young people topped the list. 4 Heritage, where there is a clear wish for design guidelines for building work, protection of the Conservation Area, and promotion of our history. 5 Environment, a broad area including overgrown hedges and footpaths, the future of trees, litter, etc.

This is in no way exhaustive and leaves out significant issues and specialist areas like

Access (problems for those with any disability are highlighted) and Flooding. Later the vexed question of litter and dog-fouling may demand its own study. There are also some issues over which the Neighbourhood Plan will have no influence, like the provision of bus services to places outside Tickhill, which will have to be taken up in a different way.

As I referred to it last month, I should add that our Town Council has met Mayor Peter Davies and both the wild wood alongside the motorway and the public toilets have been withdrawn from sale – good news indeed.

T ickhill and District Local History Society

September again and a new season of activities. But first, back to 21st July when we held our first ever Local History Fair in the Library which was very well attended. In addition to material from our own archives, Charles Kelham and Helen Wallder

brought items about Tickhill from the DMBC Archives and the Local Studies Library. We also showed long forgotten cine films of Tickhill in 1929 and 1953 – these proved very popular. Our thanks to Charles and Helen, also to Steve Payne who arranged the film display and to Lesley Nicholson who devised and managed the whole event.

Now, back to the future – well to September 20th anyway. This is when our 2012/13 Season of meetings starts with a (hopefully) brief AGM followed by Martyn Johnson talking about “The Making of Black Diamonds”. Those who have read the book “Black Diamonds, The Rise and Fall of an English Dynasty” by Catherine Bailey will know that it is the 20th Century story of one of England’s once richest families, the Fitzwilliam’s of Wentworth, South Yorkshire. Catherine Bailey comes from Southern England and when she arrived in Wentworth to do research for the book she found the local dialect difficult and information sometimes hard to come by. Fortunately, Martyn Johnson, then the village policeman took her under his wing and helped her get what she needed for this superb book. His talk about this should be absolutely fascinating. As usual the meeting will be in the Methodist Schoolrom starting at 7.30 pm and visitors will be welcome.

And finally. Beyond September 20th we have a cracking programme of meetings on the third Thursday of each month except December when we will be having our usual Christmas Social at the Millstone. Membership of the Society costs only £6 per person (free for juniors in full time education).You can join or renew your membership in the Library to avoid queuing at meetings. We look forward to seeing friends old and new.

Weather Wise. Foreigners (of which there are far too many in my view) tend to view the UK in a negative manner. Napoleon is supposed to have dismissed the British as ‘a nation of shopkeepers’ and I suppose he had a point. The English in particular have been labelled ‘perfidious Albion’ which isn’t very nice. We are also seen as a dull, dour and dangerous lot epitomised by that bulldog image.

Despite all these allegedly unsavoury characteristics, there is one subject which we really know something about: weather. Those in sunny climes who see blue skies and experience high temperatures have a limited view of weather since it is pretty much always the same. Similarly in northern countries where half the year sees no daylight and snow covers everything the people tend to be gloomy to match, write miserable novels and make violent crime films.

Of course, as a reasonable lot, we British only tolerate moderate weather. We have nothing to do with hurricanes, cyclones and tornadoes. There is the odd paltry mini-tornado I suppose, but not one of those unruly things that rips off roofs and tumbles buses into the river. Things here are done in moderation as befits our noble character. We have frost and fog and showers and thunderstorms with hail, strong sun and the odd brisk breeze - often all of these on the same day. But nothing too violent. We restrict snowfall to just a few inches, enough to bring the nation’s traffic to a halt so that people can have a day or two off work. Lately there have been a few sad lapses when there have been some floods in places but these are quickly followed by a drought to even things up. With us it is all about balance.

This means that everybody knows about weather. We know about highs and lows, cold fronts, jet streams, isobars and all that technical stuff. We talk a lot about the weather, even more than we complain about the Government, the local council, the post office and the cost of vegetables. People passing in the street will say ‘Nice day, for a change’. The postman, drenched to the skin, will comment ‘It’s a bit damp’.

Those continentals don’t know what they are missing. They never experience the jolly variety of our April showers (so called because they occur in May). They will not know the gloomy mystery of a haar on the East Coast; the bracing easterly wind tearing at the wind-break on the beach, the steady soothing drizzle pattering onto the umbrella and November fog. Things change with the seasons. In Winter, when the ground is frozen hard and hoar frost spangles the grass, when the crisp air is diamond clear, the bark of a dog two miles away comes to the tingling ears as sharp and true. In Spring, the cold world begins to burst with youth and promise. The recent fleeting shower adds sparkle to the hedges, the blackthorn blossom is overtaken by the sweet scented hawthorn, aubrietia spills over old stone walls and creamy cow parsley fringes the roadside. In high Summer thoughts turn to the sunhat and deckchair or hammock and barbecues; we dreamily watch the fluffy white clouds lazily drifting against a bright blue sky and all Nature murmurs with a drowsy hum.

And Autumn when the rattle of the combine harvester has faded and the lumpy hay bales lie lazily in the fields, the world takes on a golden sheen. Fruits have ripened in the sun and apple trees do lean down low. Unless there has been a damp spell, of course.

Yes! over here we really do know about proper weather.

Well, the weather defeated us and so did our resolve. We thought we could re-organise the Tickhill Gala in September but, after a long, hard meeting, sadly, the decision was taken not to go ahead with it. We would like to thank all those people who worked unceasingly throughout the year to make the gala a success and hope that we can count on their support for 2013. I would like to thank everyone who has pledged their support for the future and I will be contacting them in early September to put together a plan of campaign.

Tickhill Town Council

At the Council meeting 24th July 2012, the Councillors accepted D.M.B.C.’s Code of Conduct and all forms relating to the Doncaster’s Register of Members’ Disclosable Pecuniary interests were returned to the Clerk completed. These were in consequence passed to the Monitoring Officer. The Council’s Standing Orders have been amended to reflect the change.

I am proud to announce that Tickhill Town has been invited to become a Patron of the Victoria Cross Trust. It was a great honour for the Council to accept the invitation on behalf of Tickhill. Current Patrons are an MP for Chester, a D Day Veteran Paratrooper, a former Commanding Officer of Queens Own Rifles of Canada, a former 3 Para and Falklands Veteran and an MP for Portsmouth. There is no financial commitment and it should be an educational asset to Tickhill. D.M.B.C. has asked for tenders for a full survey of the Lime Trees on Bawtry Road. This will be carried out in August and the survey should be ready for public viewing in late September. Meanwhile, general maintenance to the trees will be carried out during the next few weeks with the removal of basal growth and stumps from previously felled trees. There are now 62 trees remaining of the 80. It is planned that the Council will hold an open day or drop in session so the future plan can be discussed.

During the last week of July Tickhill Council invited the Mayor of Doncaster, Mr P. Davis to attend a meeting to discuss various outstanding issues. The main area of discussion was centred on the parking issues we have. As a consequence of this meeting, it is hoped Tickhill will have a traffic warden to impose the few parking restrictions we have, so please be aware when returning back to the drop off and pick up school schedule in September that there could be a Traffic Warden about.

There were also discussions with Mayor P. Davies on the Land for sale at the side of the A1M motorway and the sale of the Public toilets by D.M.B.C. What the outcome will be we do not know.

It was good to see so many members of the public at our last Council meeting, and just to remind you all there is an open session from 7.00pm to 7.15pm when members of the public can air their views and pass comments. Please do come along.
