GREEN THINGS (continued):

• If a company is guilty of green-washing, they are misleading consumers by proclaiming that they implement positive environmental practices that don’t exist or can’t be substantiated. The company might falsely claim that they use recycled content in their product, or advertise one small truth to distract consumers from a larger falsehood.

• The word green has found its way into many terms in the English language. If you’re a greenhorn, you’re an inexperienced beginner. When the green-eyed monster rears its ugly head, it represents jealousy; similarly, an individual can be green with envy. Those who have the ability to make anything grow are said to have a green thumb. If you have a roll of greenbacks, your pocket is full of U.S. currency. Not feeling well? You might be described as green around the gills.

• Members of the Green Party focus on the environment, equal opportunity, social justice and non-violence. It is their platform that, “every human being deserves a say in the decisions that affect their lives.” The party does not accept corporate donations, shunningcorporations’influenceandcontrol over government and the media. Probably the most famous Green Party member is Ralph Nader.

• The blue-green color of teal was named for the Common Teal, also known as the Eurasian Teal, a common breed of duck, which is the smallest “dabbling” duck. This means it feeds at the surface of the water rather than by diving. The Teal’s green eye patch dominates the bird’s otherwise chestnut-colored head.

• The myrtle plant is the source of the green color by the same name, a very dark shade, darker than spinach. Plants in the same family as the myrtle include the clove, guava, allspice and eucalyptus.

• Most people won’t recognize the name ofHugh“Lumpy”Brannum, butbabyboomers will remember him as the overall-wearing sidekick of children’s television’s Captain Kangaroo. Aptly named Mr. Green Jeans, Brannumappeared as the handyman at the TreasureHousefrom1955to1984.

• We know the Trifolium repens by another name — the white clover, but more commonly, the shamrock. Taken from the Irish word, seamrog, meaning “little clover,” this white-floweredperennialwas regardedbyearly Celts as a charm against evil spirits. Legend has it that St. Patrick used the little three-leafed plant to illustrate the doctrine of the Holy Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — to the Irish people, demonstrating how each leaf was separate yet joined together in a single stem. Most Irish brides include shamrocks in their bridal bouquet as well as in the groom’s boutonniere.

Page 2 Tidbits® of Fort Wayne, Allen County• The color green is considered sacred

in the Islam religion as a symbol of vegetation and new life. Folklore states that Muhammad was especially fond of the color and wore a green cloak and turban. According to the Koran, inhabitants of Paradise will dress in fine garments of green silk. SeveralIslamic nations incorporate the color intotheirflags;infact, theflagofLibyaissimplyagreenfield, withnoothercolors, designs or details.

• That pigment in plants and algae that makes them green is known as chlorophyll, and it is necessary for the process of photosynthesis. Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight and uses that energy to synthesize carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water. Leaves change color in the fall because the chlorophyll in the leaves begins to decay.

• A gentleman in China who wants to express his love for his sweetheart will give her a gift of jade. In this culture, this gemstone indicates eternity, and is given to convey deep eternal love, similar to the symbol of gold and diamonds in the Western world.

• At the end of the yellow brick road in the Land of Oz is the Emerald City, home of the famous Wizard. In L. Frank Baum’s legendary novel, allthose entering the Emerald City were made to wear green-tinted eyeglasses that made everything look green, although the City was “no more green than any other city.”

• Can you imagine the Wicked Witch of the West without her trademark green makeupinthe1939film,“TheWizardof Oz”? The makeup, which took two hours every day to apply, achieved its distinctive color from a dangerous chemical, copper oxide, and actress Margaret Hamilton had to exercise extreme caution when eating meals while wearing it, so as not to ingest any. It became even more dangerous when Hamilton was making her spectacular exit from Munchkinland via an elevator in a trap door on the set. When the burstofrealfirecameup, hermakeupignited, causing painful burns that required six weeks to heal.

• The mineral beryl, which is actually beryllium aluminum silicate, is a colorlesscrystal.Butaddacoupleofimpurities to the mineral, specificallychromium and vanadium, and the beryl crystal becomes a beautiful green color. The new stone is called an emerald! Although emeralds are mined primarily in Colombia, they can also be found in Australia, Canada, India, Italy, France, Germany and Nigeria, among several other places. They have also been found in the U.S. states of Connecticut, Montana, Nevada and the Carolinas.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHByPaulG.Donohue,M.D.

Heart Failure Can Cause Feet to Swell

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please explain why I have to take my shoes off late every day because my feetandankleshaveswollenanddon’tfitintotheshoes.Ifloparoundinslipperswithoutheels.Inthemorning, after a night’s sleep, my feet are back to normal. I am 77 and take no medicines. -- K.M.

ANSWER: I can’t give you an unequivocal response because there are numerous causes of foot and ankle swelling. The medical name for such swelling is edema. Even in relatively healthy people, it occurs if people sitorstandforanylengthoftime.Gravitypullsfluidout of the circulation, and it accumulates in the feet and ankles. This is especially true at older ages, when the circulatory system becomes somewhat leaky. For this kind of swelling, the solution is to elevate the legs when sitting. The most effective elevation is raising the legs above heart level, something that can be done only by lying down with pillows propping up the legs. Getting up and moving about isanotherwaytopreventfluidaccumulationinthefeet.Heart failure is a more serious cause of such swelling. When the heart’s pumping action becomes feeble, fluidescapesfrombloodvesselsandagainaccumulates in the ankles and feet. Kidney disease with retention of body fluid is another cause ofedema. Liver disease does the same.Another condition called lymphedema produces the samepicture.Lymphisfluidthatnormallyescapesthe circulation to percolate around tissues and organs to provide nourishment and to wash away germs. Small vessels called lymphatics vacuum up this fluid and return it to the circulation.Anythingthat disrupts lymphatics can lead to ankle/foot swelling. An old infection and surgery are two such disruptors. Since ankle and foot swelling is a sign of many urgent medical conditions, don’t fool around with this. See your family doctor. The booklet on edema and lymphedema clearly describe these conditions and their treatment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 106W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am concerned about my brother, who is 63, diabetic, weighs 300 poundsandis5feet8 inchestall.Hefallsasleep, wakesand falls asleep repeatedly at the table and when he sits down. Why? He says he’s tired. He picked a scab on his leg and blood squirted out 6 inches. What does that mean? -- Anon.

ANSWER: Your brother might have sleep apnea. His body size suggests that it could be the reason for his daytime sleepiness. Spurting blood indicates that an artery was broken. No one should pick at scabs, especially a diabetic.Your brother needs medical attention. He has to lose weight both for control of diabetes and for control of sleep apnea, if that is what he has. He is at great risk of incurring the complications of diabetes -- heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure -- if he doesn’t start paying attention to his health. ***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O.Box536475,Orlando,FL32853-6475.(c) 2011 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Tidbits® of Fort Wayne, Allen County Page 6OVERCOMING THE ODDS:MARIO LEMIEUX

Nicknamed “Super Mario” by teammates and commentators, Mario Lemieux has proven himself to be just that. Struck by serious illness at the height of his career, this super athlete battled for his life and came back stronger than ever. • It seems appropriate that lemieux

translates“thebest”inFrench.BorninMontreal,Quebec, in1965,Lemieuxis widely considered one of the best hockey players of all time. In his 17 seasons as a forward with the NHL’s PittsburghPenguins, he scored 690goals and had 1,033 assists. That’squite an accomplishment considering that illness and injuries kept him out of36percentofhispotentialregularseason games.

• The Lemieux family basement was thefirstpracticefieldforyoungMario, who, at age 3, started practicingthere with his brothers, using wooden kitchen spoons as hockey sticks and bottle caps as pucks. It only made sense for their father to pour a rink on the front lawn shortly afterward.

• When Lemieux was drafted by the Penguins in 1984, the team wasin deep financial trouble and therelocation rumors were flying. Tenyears prior, the team had declared bankruptcy, and by the time of Lemieux’ first season, was drawingless than 7,000 fans per game and seemedunabletofillitsarenatoevenhalf-capacity.

• During his rookie season, Lemieux not only played in the NHL All-Star game, he was named that game’s MVP, the first rookie to achieve thisdistinction. With his help, Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup in 1991 and1992, and Lemieux was the NHL’sMVP three times, and the league’s leading scorer six times.

• With the 1990 season came backsurgery for a herniated disc and agonizing back pain. But it didn’tkeep Lemieux from his first Stanley

Cup and earning MVP of the playoffs. In early 1993 came theunbelievable announcement that he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He immediately began aggressive radiation treatments. After only two months, on the day of his final treatment, he made the trip toPhiladelphia to play in the Penguins-Flyers game.

• Four months later, Lemieux was once again in surgery, this time for a herniated muscle in his back. At the end of the season, he was forced to take a leave of absence to recover from the fatigue of cancer treatments.

• Lemieux was back in full force for the beginningofthe1995season,scoringhis 500th career goal in October. During the following season came his 600th.

• Lemieux announced his retirement in 1997 at age 32, his number 66was retired, and he was immediately inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame without the usual three-year waiting period. In 1998, the Penguinsdeclared bankruptcy, with over $90million inoutstandingdebt.Becausethe team had been in trouble for quite some time, Lemieux had deferred his salaryandwasowed$30million.Heconverted the debt into equity and became the majority owner of the team. In 2000, he returned to the ice, becoming one of three players who were Hall of Fame members while still playing. (The other two were Gordie Howe and Guy Lafleur.) Two yearslater, Lemieux was a gold medal winner at the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics.

• His second and permanent retirement came in 2006, shortly after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, aheart condition that produces irregular heartbeats. He remains the Penguins’ principal owner and chairman of the board. He has the distinction of being the only person to ever win the Stanley Cup as both a player and an owner.

Stand Downs 2011We’re now at the beginning of the Stand Down season for 2011. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans has geared up and is ready to roll.

Stand Downs started during the Vietnam War when combat troops were given a safe place to get cleaned up and just decompress.

Stand Downs now are for homeless veterans.

If you’re a homeless veteran, these Stand Downs are for you. You are invited to attend and get any help or fellowship you may need. There will be medical and dental services, clothing, food, legal help, substance help, housing services, job counseling. Various agencies will have representatives there as well, such as Social Security and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

If your situation is different and you’re in a position to either host or volunteer at a Stand Down, step up. Any number of organizations could use your help: the VA, veterans service groups, homeless shelters and more all get together to hold Stand Down events.

If you want to host a Stand Down in your area, see the guide on the site or call them. Jeff Gorden Puts Field on Notice

Lost perhaps in the knowledge that Jimmie Johnson has won five straightSprint Cup championships is the fact that Jeff Gordon has won four.

Perhaps by winning at Phoenix International Raceway, Gordon served notice that he might just equal his Hendrick Motorsports’ teammate this year. Sixty-six races had passed between the82ndand83rdvictoriesofGordon’scareer.

Gordon,39,wonfourchampionships inhisfirstnineseasonsbuthasn’twonanyin the nine years since his most recent championship (2001).

“There was a lot of pressure on us, not just this year ... but going back the last 66 races that we have not had a win,” said Gordon, “so there was a lot of pressure. ... You hear it from the media, you hear it from the fans, and it’s hard to ignore that.

“I guess every race-car driver knows that there’s going to be that time in their life when they are not going to go to victory lane again, and you don’t know when that time is going to come. I was so hoping that time was not for me now.”Gordon hadn’t gone away. He was just missing in victory lane for quite a while.

Though Gordon has never won a championship under the so-called Chase format, he made the Chase in six of its sevenyears, finishingsecondtoJohnsonin 2007 and third in 2009 (to Johnson)and2004 (toKurtBusch).Still,Gordonwaswinless in2008and2010,winningoncein2009.

“I felt like I still have it in me,” he said. “I know how passionate I am about it, but things have changed in the sport. The cars have changed. Tires have changed. Competition has changed.

“So, when you go through a streak of without winning, you think, OK, is it me or what is it? Days like (this) allow you to gainthatconfidenceinyourself, justkeepdoing what you’re doing, what’s gotten you victory lane in the past, keep giving that good information, and when the tools are around you, and the chemistry is there throughout the whole team and good decisions are made, days like (this) will happen.”Simple as that.***Monte Dutton covers motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Patrick Swayze excelled in football, diving, broad-jumping, track and martial arts. Yet he abandoned all of his sports to study ballet and dance professionally with major New York City companies. His first professional gig was asCinderella’s Prince Charming in Disneyland parades. Swayze’s television debut came on the series “M*A*S*H,” where he played a soldier who had been diagnosed with leukemia. Of course, he’s best known for his role as Johnny Castle in 1987’s “Dirty Dancing,” and asSam Wheat in 1990’s “Ghost,”roles for which he received Golden Globe nominations. Today, Patrick Roy spends his time managing and coaching the Quebec Ramparts, part of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

• A different number 33 jersey hasbeen retired by the New York Knicks, belonging to center Patrick Ewing. Ewing lived the first 11years of his life in Jamaica, where he played cricket and soccer. At Georgetown University, he was one of the first college players to starton the varsity team as a freshman, which contributed to his being voted as the 16th greatest college player of all time by ESPN.
