• ClimberCoryRichardswas thefirstAmericanto scale an over-26,000-foot (8,000-m) moun-tain in winter. Along with partners from Italy andKazakhstan,RichardsclimbedtheGasher-brumIIinPakistan.

• Richardsandhistwopartnersfacedhurricane-forcewindsandtemperatures50degreesbelowzero. They performed this amazing feat without guides or supplemental oxygen.

• The three men were aware of the perils theyfacedbeforebeginningthejourney.Theyweretold that snow conditions would be unstable,buttheycouldn’thaveforeseentheClass4ava-lanche that nearly killed them.

• ItwasSimoneMoro,theveteranclimberfromItaly, who first freed himself, then helped theother two men dig out of the massive wall of ice.

• Richardsdocumentedmuchoftheincidentwithasmall,high-definitioncamera.Immediatelyaf-terbeingfreed,hedocumentedhisownreaction,acombinationofreliefandterror.

• The footage thatRichards tookwas used in anature documentary called “Cold.” The filmchroniclestheir journey, thefirstsuccessfulat-tempt to climb thePakistanipeakduringwin-terbyanyone.Thefilmplayedatanumberoffilmfestivalsin2011andisbeingdistributedbyForgeMotionPictures.

•Many runnershaveattempted tobeat the timerecord for completing the entire Appalachian Trail.Observersweresurprisedtodiscoverthattherecordhadbeenbrokenbyafemale,PharrDavis.

•Davisbestedarecordheldbymenformorethan

• 65-year-oldwriterandArcticexplorerJohnTurkjoined26-year-oldprokayakerErikBoomerina1,485-milecircumnavigationofEllesmearIslandinCanada.ThiswasthelastgreatadventureforTurk,butitwasonlyoneofmanyinalifetimededicated to rugged outdoor exploration.

• Prior to his final trip with Boomer, Turk hadcompleted a number ofmemorable climbs andhascompletedfiveseparateSiberianexpeditionsinanefforttostudyShamanicculture.

• Thetriprequiredthetwosportsmentodragtheirkayaksacross800milesofflat ice. Eachkay-akwasover13feetlongandweighedover200pounds.They began the trip inMay,when icehadyettomeltcompletely,butwereabletofindpockets of open water after the spring thaw.

Q: I have a window-mounted air conditioner that I use in the summer months. During the winter, it’s stored away.This year, it doesn’t seem to becooling as well as it did in the past. Do I need to charge it with freonorsomething?--BaileyT.,Wheeling,W.Va.

A: I’m not sure how old your window-unitairconditioner is,but refrigerant (R-22freon)doesn’t typicallyneed tobe replacedinthefirstcoupleofyearsoftheunit’s life.Additionally, purchasing and handling of freon is now regulated, so you would need to contact a refrigeration professional to check and charge the unit.

Before laying outmoney for that repair,there are other ways to improve your air conditioner’scoolingcapability:

--Makesure theunit ismountedproperlyin the window and isn’t tilting downwardor upward. --Check to see if siding, bricks,leavesorotherdebrisareblockingthelouverson the outside of the unit. --Keep curtains and furniture away from the unit while it’s

operating,toensuregoodairflowinto the room.

--Make sure the air-conditioningunit is clean, including the coils and the intakefilter on the frontof the unit.

--Note the time of day that the room feelshottest,andnotethepositionofthesun.Closingthecurtainsonwindowsthatdon’thaveanair-conditioning unit can reduce the amount of sun-generated heat in the room.

--If you have a ceiling fan, even in another room of the house, use it to your advantage. Reverse the direction of the fan blades (theswitch is located on the metal housing for the fan blades) so that air is pulled up by the fanrather than pushed down. Cool air normallysinks, so the fan will stir that air and make the wholehousemorecomfortable.

A WoRLD oF ADVENTUREAmerica obviously doesn’t corner the market

on men and woman of courage and adventurous spirit. Here are a few of the more interesting recent examplesofourfellowexplorersacrosstheglobe.

•AlastairHumphreysoftheUnitedKingdomhasriddenhisbicycleover46,000miles invariouslocales around the world. Humphreys did this beforehewas35yearsold.HehasalsocrossedIceland’sglacialhighlandsentirelyonfootandisplanningwhatwillbethelongestjourneytotheSouthPoleeverattemptedwithoutsupport.

• Aftertravellingnearlyeverywhereontheglobe,Humphreys decided to see more of the country ofhisbirth.Hespentallof2011inGreatBritain.Hecompletedanambitiousgroupof“microad-ventures,”beginningandendingthesetripsatthefront door of his home outside London.

•Amonghisexplorations in2011wasahikeuptheM25,thewell-knownroadwaythatisnotori-ous for having theworst traffic in the country.He also swam the Thames River, familiarizedhimselfwiththeUK’spublictransportationandspent several days living entirely off the land.

• Humphreysusedsocialmedia toencouragehisfellow adventurers to record video diaries of their own “microadventures.”ThroughTwitter,he received a surprising number of responses,some from as far away as Japan.

• Austrian mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunnerrecentlybecametheonlywomantosummitall14 of the peaks worldwide that measure over26,000feet(8,000m).Shecompletedthestag-geringfeatin2011,bestingtheK2nearthebor-derofChinaandPakistan.

• Kaltenbrunner had nearly gotten the record in2010ontheverysamemountain.Shewasonly400metersfromthesummitwhentragedystruck.Her partner, mountaineer Fredrik Ericsson,slippedwhile climbing above her and tumbledbelow. Kaltenbrunner immediately abandonedher mission in an attempt to rescue her partner. Unfortunately, Ericsson’s injuries from the fallproved fatal.

• Thetragic2010triptoK2wasKaltenbrunner’sfifthattempttoscalethemostdangerouspeakonEarth.AninfamoussectionoftheK2knownasthe“Bottleneck”claimed11livesin2008alone.

• ScottishbicyclistDannyMacAskillquithisjobasamechanicin2009sohecouldpursueridingfull-time.Before,hewould rideafterworkbutfelt he was falling short of his cycling dreams.

• InMarchof2009,MacAskillhadhisroommateDave Sowerby tag along and film as he per-formed a series of outrageous tricks around and acrossEdingburgh’smostfamouslandmarks.

• Thevideobecameaviralsensation,beingviewedmorethan27milliontimes!

• ThefeatsthatMacAskillperformedonthevideowere so astounding that some viewers accused himofusingspecialeffects.MacAskillwasin-spired by the idea of creating physical puzzlesusing the landscape. His goal was to show how his bicycle could overcome seemingly impos-sibleobstacles.F
