Now that the weather is warming, and spring is officially here, you probably have noticed more two-wheeled vehicles on the streets. TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

• On April 17, 1790, American statesman, printer, scientist and writer Benjamin Franklin dies in Philadelphia at age 84. Deeply interested in science and technology, his inventions include the Franklin stove, bifocal eyeglasses and the lightning rod.

• On April 11, 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte, emperor of France, abdicates the throne and, in the Treaty of Fontainebleau, is banished to the Mediterranean island of Elba. He died at

age 52 on May 5, 1821, possibly from stomach cancer, although some theories contend he was poisoned.

• On April 12, 1908, a fire in Chelsea, Mass., at the Boston Blacking Company leaves 12 dead, 85 missing and presumed dead and more than 17,000 homeless. Due to high winds, a good portion of the city burned. It took nearly 10 years for Chelsea to be completely rebuilt.

• On April 16, 1943, in Basel, Switzerland, Albert Hoffman, a Swiss chemist, accidentally consumes LSD-25, a synthetic drug he had created in 1938 as part of his research into the medicinal value of lysergic acid compounds. Widespread use of the so-called mind-expanding drug did not begin until the 1960s.

• On April 15, 1959, new Cuban leader Fidel Castro visits the United States. The trip got off to an inauspicious start when it became clear that

President Dwight D. Eisenhower had no intention of meeting with Castro. Instead, Eisenhower went to the golf course to avoid any chance meeting.

• On April 13, 1964, Sydney Poitier becomes the first African American to win the Academy Award for Best Actor, for his role as a construction worker in "Lilies of the Field" (1963). He debuted on Broadway in 1946 in an all-black production of "Lysistrata," and by 1950 he was appearing in Hollywood films, beginning with "No Way Out."

• On April 14, 1975, the American airlift of Vietnamese orphans to the United States ends after 2,600 children are transported to America. Operation Baby Lift lasted 10 days and was carried out during the final, desperate phase of the war, as North Vietnamese forces were closing in on Saigon.

SCOOTING AROUND (continued):• During and shortly after World War II, the

Cushman Scooter Company was the main manufacturer of scooters, and they were producing about 300 scooters a day. In the post-war world, scooters were very popular because they were economical. Japan, France and Italy started making their own models.

• The U.S. Department of Transportation definition for a scooter is a motorcycle that has “a platform for the operator’s feet or has integrated footrests,” and has a “step-through architecture.”

• Scooter owners and admirers sometimes refer to scooters as “putt-putts!” In countries where cars and gas are very expensive and in cities where parking is a problem, scooters are all over the place.

• Problems with scooters in the early years discouraged some buyers: They had loud two-stroke engines, they were known to have parts fall off, and they didn’t last very long. In spite of these problems, the companies did a good job selling them with advertising that made them look like must-haves for “cool” people. Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck fell in love while riding a Vespa in the movie “Roman Holiday.” Scooters were romanticized as much as horse-drawn carriages.

• Vespa is the brand name for scooters built by the Piaggio Company in Italy whose production started in 1946. They produced 2,484 Vespas in their first year; the second year production jumped to 10,535, and almost 50 years later, in 1994, Piaggio built over 10 million of the fun machines. So, where did they get the name? Vespas make a buzzing sound like a wasp — the Italian word for wasp is “vespa.” Many people tend to call all scooters Vespas. 2nd Quarter 2011

SCOOTING AROUND (continued):• The Piaggio Company was one of several

former military aircraft companies that started producing scooters after World War II. Its Vespa was ahead of its time with many new features. It had easy-to-change tires, a hidden engine that cut down on noise and messiness, and its parts were better protected from the elements. These machines were seen as more durable and desirable. By 1960, Vespas were being manufactured in Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, France, Spain and still in Italy as well.

• Another early scooter in Europe that came about after the Vespa was the Lambretta. It was built by plumber Ferdinando Innocenti with its frame made out of pipes. He wanted to build a more affordable scooter. The name Lambretta came from the Lambro River, which was the site of the factory, near Milan, Italy.

• The Rabbit and the Pigeon were two of the first scooters built in Japan, by Fuji and Mitsubishi, respectively. These filled a need for cheap transportation in the far-eastern market from the late 1940s to the 1960s.

• With Cushman and Vespa selling scooters in the United States at a very fast pace, Harley-Davidson, the only made-in-America motorcycle company in 1959, decided to manufacture some of the popular small machines. Their ads said, “Tops them all in beauty! Tops them all in performance!” However, it’s estimated that only about 3,000 sold in the five years they were made. A nice 1960 model is on display at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington, Ohio.

• By the late 1960s and early 1970s, scooter popularity faded in America. People were more interested in sports cars and saw scooters as a last-resort ride.

If you have a commute that does not require freeway driving, consider a scooter. A scooter may not give you the protection of an automobile, but it requires a lot less fuel and provides much more fun. (Did you know you can fit six or seven scooters in a parking space?) You may find that a fun scoot at the end of a stressful day will help you relax and enjoy being around your family more when you get home. Scooters bring out the kid in you!

Scooter Pies were a fun, delicious snack in the 1960s. Trademarked by Burry’s, a division of Quaker Oats, on December 17, 1959, these big, marshmallow-filled, chocolate-coated, cookie-like pies were individually wrapped. This made them a very popular item for school and work lunch boxes. A similar treat, the MoonPie, was trademarked many years before, in 1919, by the Chattanooga Bakery. You’ve probably heard more about MoonPies than you have Scooter Pies, but both were big hits.

A mechanic working on a scooter noticed a well-known cardiologist walking by his shop. “Doc, take a look at this engine. I opened its heart and replaced the valves. It’s working like new. Why are you paid so much more than me when we basically do the same thing?”

The cardiologist smiled and said, “But, can you do it with the engine running?”

Postal services in France, Spain, Switzerland, Austria and Italy use a scooter fleet of over 60,000 Piaggio Liberty scooters for delivery services. A version is now available with an electric-powered motor, which is great for the busy city streets.

What's perhaps even more notable, though, is its odor: The plant gives off a strong smell that is most often compared to that of a decomposing animal. Hence the plant's more common name, the corpse flower.***Thought for the Day: "First there is a time when we believe everything, then for a little while we believe with discrimination, then we believe nothing whatever, and then we believe everything again -- and, moreover, give reasons why we believe." -- Georg Christoph Lichtenberg

PAW’S CORNERBy Sam Mazzotta

Spring Heralds Start of Flea Season

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to write to you about a flea remedy that works for us. My kids and I live in a rural area, and between our two houses have seven dogs and one calico cat. We used to have a very bad flea and tick prob-lem until our local vet recommended using a product called Comfortis. This is a once-a-month tablet -- the dosage is based on the weight of the dog -- that costs much less than Frontline or similar flea and tick treatments. Since starting Comfortis our dogs have been flea- and tick-free.Before we found this product, we would bathe our dogs and cats in a large tub of soapy water with 1/4 cup of Pine-Sol added. That also would kill fleas and ticks. -- Louise C., Rison, Ark.

DEAR LOUISE: Thanks for the tip on the new flea and tick medication! Readers should consult their veterinar-ian about this medicine to make sure it’s right for their dog, as like any drug taken internally or topically it may in-teract with other medications a dog may be taking. However, I’m not wild about the Pine-

Sol bath tip. That’s a very strong clean-ing solution that will dry a pet’s skin, which causes irritation, and also re-moves natural oils on the skin that help repel fleas. The only “household” soap I’d recommend would be Skin-So-Soft, and even that just once a month. Other than that, use a bath product formulat-ed specifically for a dog or cat.To further reduce a pet’s chances of ac-quiring fleas and ticks, vacuum carpets at least twice weekly indoors and wash curtains and linens frequently. Outside, mow the lawn weekly so it’s not as easy for pests to jump or drop onto a pet’s fur.

Send your pet questions and tips to [email protected], or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Ser-vice, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Find more pet advice and resources at www.pawscorner.com.

Saving Money in 2011

With a little effort, small savings can add up to big money in the space of a year. Here are a few steps to take in 2011.If you've filed your taxes and expect a big refund, consider that you've just made an interest-free loan to the government. They've had use of your money when you could have used it yourself. Take a look at your tax withholding, do the math and make adjustments to bring you as close as possible to the amount you'll actually owe. If you're getting a raise this year, put at least half of the increase in savings or toward debt, especially credit cards. Pay down the account with the highest interest rate first. (But don't cancel the card, as it's part of your credit

profile.) Commit to making one extra mortgage payment per year or sending an additional amount each month. Enclose a note asking that it be applied to your principal. Use an online calculator

to see just how many years and dollars you can shave off your mortgage.Comparison shop before you buy big items, especially electronics and appliances. Check the Sunday sales flyers in the paper and look online at sites like Pricegrabber.com to compare prices. Print out what you find online and take it to your local store: Chances are they'll meet or beat the other price.Consider whether you're due for an adjustment in your property taxes. Ask the local tax assessor for a reappraisal if you've been in your home for more than three years; it may be worth less than it was, in which case you're paying too much.Look for new home or vehicle insurance and consider raising your deductible.

While a higher deductible will mean that you'll have to come up with more cash should you ever have a claim, you'll be making smaller monthly payments on the policy. Ask about combining home and auto with one company. It's possible you'll get an additional discount.Shop around for a new bank if yours charges ATM fees, has a monthly service charge for checking accounts or requires you to keep a minimum balance. Call credit unions or savings banks in your area, or check Bankrate.com to find local banks.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

2nd Quarter 2011

Week 14April 3 - 9

Page 4

SCOOTING AROUND (continued):• Crowded countries like India, Japan and Taiwan

still had a need for cheap transportation and vehicles that didn’t take up a lot of parking space. Today, for example, the population in Taiwan exceeds 23 million. There are more than 11 million registered motor scooters in that country alone, with Kymco motor scooters probably the most popular.

• A small company that came along with its first scooter in 1954 was Honda — not so small today. Honda’s scooter history in Japan has been progressing since then, but they didn’t enter the North American market until 1983. Honda has marketed numerous scooter models, from two-strokes to the more environmentally friendly four-stroke models.

• Honda’s most popular scooter in North America is called the Metropolitan in the United States and the Jazz in Canada. The same scooter model is known as the Crea and Scoopy overseas. Cool names for cool little scooters, wherever you ride!

• The last decade has been a good one for Hondas, Vespas and many other brands of scooters in the United States. Thanks to higher gas prices, scooter sales have been brisk. The best year yet for Honda’s small scooters was 2008. Every dealership in the United States sold out by the middle of the summer. In 2009, Honda ramped up production and ended up with too many, but those had sold too by 2010.

• You can’t haul children to soccer and baseball practice or drive the family on a cross-country vacation, but commuting to work on a scooter may become the norm, even in prosperous North America in the coming years. Will we become more “scooter-driven” like Paris, Milan, Tokyo and Beijing in our new economy?
