TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT
NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond
Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in
1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.
• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.
• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

• On April 1, 1924, Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler is sentenced to five years in prison for treason for leading the Nazis’ unsuccessful “Beer Hall Putsch.” Sent to Landsberg jail, he spent his time dictating his autobiography, “Mein Kampf,” and was released after nine months.

• On April 30, 1947, Preston Tucker announces his concept for a new automobile to be named the “Tucker.” His plans called for a rear-mounted engine as powerful as an aircraft motor, a stationary “cyclops” headlight and a steering wheel placed in the center of the car.
• On April 5, 1951, at the end of a highly publicized espionage case, death sentences are imposed against Julius and Ethel Rosenberg after they were found guilty of conspiring to transmit atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. The only incriminating evidence came from a confessed spy who was given a reduced sentence to testify against them.
• On April 4, 1969, the most popular show on TV, “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour,” is canceled by CBS because the brothers failed to submit an episode to network executives before its broadcast. Among other controversial content in the show, the network executives objected to antiwar guests, including Pete Seeger, who sang a Vietnam protest song on the air.
• On April 2, 1987, the United States government allows individual states to increase the speed limit on rural roads from 55 mph to 65 mph. Since 1973, when President Richard Nixon set a federal maximum speed limit of 55 mph, no cars were allowed to exceed this speed.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
Be Still, My Racing Heart
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: During the night and mostly early in the morning hours, my heart speeds up to 200 beats a minute. There is no pain, but it wakes me up and seems to happen if I am lying facedown. I sit up and take my pulse, which is about 70 to 72. I feel my heart slowly return to normal in two to three minutes. I have worn a Holter monitor for 24 hours. My doctor says not to worry about it. Do you think I have anything to worry about? -- S.
ANSWER: For readers: A Holter monitor is a device worn externally that records all heart-beats in a given time period. They can be worn for three or more days. The doctor sees on the recording what kind of abnormal heartbeats occurred.I have to clear something up with you, S. Is your pulse 72 beats a minute when you feel your heart beating fast? The heartbeat and the pulse are one and the same. How are you counting your heartbeat? If the episodes occurred while you were being monitored and did not last long, then the doc-tor can dismiss it as not being worrisome. He should name the rhythm; ask what it is.If the fast heartbeats occurred at times you weren’t wearing the monitor, you need to wear it longer so that the rhythm can be iden-tified for what it is. The booklet on heartbeat irregularities de-scribes the more common kinds of these beats and how they are treated. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 107W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75
U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: None of my 21 grandchildren has had their tonsils out. All of my seven children did. Is this no longer done? I wish doctors would make up their minds about these things. -- B.B.ANSWER: When your children were young, it was almost standard practice to remove ton-sils as a way to protect against strep throat. We now know this isn’t necessary, and we now have antibiotics to treat strep throat. Children who have repeated strep throat in-fections still have their tonsils removed, but the operation is no longer done for preven-tion.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband and I take Lipitor. We take it before dinner in the evening. We eat half a grapefruit after break-fast. Is that OK? -- M.L.ANSWER: You can take Lipitor any time of the day, and you can take it with or without food. It’s one of the statin drugs -- the drugs that are such effective cholesterol-lowerers.Grapefruit and Lipitor are not a good com-bination. Grapefruit can increase the blood concentration of this drug. It does the same with a few other medicines. This effect of grapefruit lasts for 24 hours, so even letting 12 hours pass before taking the drug after eating grapefruit doesn’t lessen the chance of this interaction occurring.***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to an-swer individual letters, but he will incorpo-rate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.(c) 2009 North America Synd., Inc.

• A quatrain is a poem always consisting offour lines. A quatrain can also be a four-linestanza within a larger poem. Nostradamuswrote his prophecies in quatrains.
• Jintishi is Chinese form of poetry. Jintishiliterally means “modern-style poetry” despitethe fact that it dates back to the 5th century.
• Tanka is an unrhymed form of Japanesepoetry written as early as the 8th century. Itbecame a dominant form in Japan by the 13th

PAW’S CORNERBy Sam Mazzotta
Fleas, Fleas, Everywhere
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The weather is turning warm again, and once more I have to deal with fleas crawling all over my two cats. Is there any way I can get rid of them? -- Clara in Val-dosta, Ga.
DEAR CLARA: Dealing with fleas, especially in warm, humid areas like the Southeast, is very difficult. It’s nearly impossible to completely eradicate them, but you can lessen their impact in a couple of ways.Tackle the problem before it starts. As the weather warms up, fleas become more active, and their eggs begin to hatch as well. Late winter and early spring are prime time for start-ing the flea battle. This means a thorough spring cleaning of your home, and treatment of your cats.Send the cats to your vet or a grooming/boarding service for an overnight stay while you clean. While they’re there, have them bathed and groomed and treated for fleas. Even if they showed no signs of infestation during the winter, eggs could still be embedded deep in their
coats.Next, while they’re gone, clean the entire house -- top to bot-tom. This means moving the furniture and cleaning under-neath it, as well as taking down all linens and curtains and wash-ing them. Treat the carpets and upholstery with a nontoxic flea stopper (available at pet stores). Vacuum thoroughly and discard the vacuum cleaner bag once you’re done.Throughout the remainder of the warm months -- well into October -- you will need to maintain a regular flea-preven-tion schedule. Your cats must be treated for fleas regularly with a treatment recommend-ed by your veterinarian; don’t let this lapse. If the cats spend time outside, you must brush them each time they come in to dislodge anything that attached to their coats. Vacuum the car-pets and furniture at least once a week, and wash all linens regularly so fleas don’t settle in and lay their eggs.
