The HoodBen Hunter & Emma Pierce

Don’t you just love to go to a pub “where everyone knows your name?” What made the TV show Cheers such an enduring show in the hearts of all was the relationships between the staff and their customers. Vancouver’s The Hood, like Cheers, has the same feel and atmosphere. It is located inside the Howard Johnson Hotel (formerly the Biltmore Hotel) at 395 Kingsway - the corner of Kingsway & East 12th in Vancouver.

Ben and Emma, the managing partners of The Hood and their staff know many of their customers as a result of having been part of the success of the Penny Lane Pub at 41st & Main which closed due to leasing extensions not working out with the owners of the building.

The Hood pub has full measures where a pint of beer is a full 20 ounces. Every month brings a new opportunity – contests and giveaways. Come find out what you might win! Hungry? Ben and Emma have a totally amazing Chef who makes some of the best pub fare that one can enjoy at reasonable prices. Love sports? Huge HD TV Screens are everywhere to watch your favorite game!

Ben and Emma support their community and together they love to assist in doing fundraising for the Children’s Hospital, a local food bank and the South Asian Division of the Vancouver General Hospital. They have been involved with Shaw TV and ran meat draws to raise funds for the minor baseball leagues. The Hood loves to support the community’s fundraising efforts.

If you are looking for “Good Times, Great Sports, Great Food and Drink” then come to The Hood located at 395 Kingsway (at East 12th Avenue) in Vancouver. Open 11:00 am-12am Sunday – Thursday and Friday & Saturdays until 1:00 am. If you wish to set up an event, or to find out the daily specials call 604-872-7342.

BC Business Shares the Mojo

When a BC software company got tired of daily calls from charities asking for donations, they decided it was time for a new approach. “There are so many great causes and we want to give money to everyone, “ explains Dr Cathy Key, from Keynote Networks. “So rather than give a few dollars here and there, we decided to build our donations directly into our new software”.

The software, called Regimojo, is an online system for selling tickets for events such as fundraisers, dinners, sporting events and other gatherings. Almost a third of the revenue from sales of Regimojo will go back into the community.

To celebrate the launch of Regimojo, Cathy and her team are looking for 20 good causes to participate in a Facebook event called Share the Mojo. Fans and friends will vote for their favourite cause, and Keynote will donate 10% of the revenue from sales of their software to whichever cause gets the most votes. Additional money will be donated to individual charities and community members. To find out how to participate, visit www.regimojo.com.

Cathy Key also leads the Self Expression and Leadership program with Landmark Education. This program trains people in how to develop community projects that make a difference in the world. “Most people want to make a real contribution to their community, but often

don’t know how to do that or how to do it in a way that has a real impact,” she says. “We create over 10,000 community projects worldwide a year. Share the Mojo is an example of the kind of innovative thinking and creativity typical of these projects”.

If you have a good cause that could use some extra mojo, or if you want to find a way to get involved , visit

www.regimojo.com

I heard what I thought to be an excellent idea when it comes to al-

lowance for your kids. My kids are only 4 so they have not begun to expect cash in their hands. I’ll start by pointing out that I did not receive an allowance as a child. My parents view was that they paid for any sport, music or educational activities that I wish to pursue and in return I had set chores and duties to perform around the house. When my sister and I wanted to see a movie they would hand over a little cash at the time. What I heard recently was this.

Apparently there are parents that just hand over cash to their kids and the kids just expect it because… well they were born…crazy. Teach your children to work for their money because later in life that is reality. Put together a list of chores and a dollar value for completion. Start with easier tasks that pay less (clean the bathroom) and work your way up to larger tasks that would pay more (new roof on the house). Your child cannot just move to the higher paying jobs without completing the lesser jobs. That is not how it is in the real world. We don’t start our working careers as the CEO (usually), we work our way through the lesser jobs to get to the top. Our kids might kick and scream now but later in life they will move up the ladder of success because of their excellent work ethic and they will then earn enough money to look after us.

Own Your Life,

Thomas DeSchutterYour Wealth Advisorhttp://www.dwfinancial.ca/

Tidbits chatted briefly with BC Lions kicker Paul McCallum this week.Local born kicker is living the dream with the Lions recent winning streak.

Tidbits: Are you excited about playing in the new BC Place stadium?Paul: Everybody is excited to play in the new stadium, the team, staff. Fans should also be excited and should come down and check it out.Tidbits: Why are the Lions playing so much better now?Paul: I think the team just got a little ahead of ourselves early in the season, and decided to get our heads back to the task at hand playing as a team.Tidbits: What is the focus of the team for the rest of the season?Paul: Keep our heads down, keep playing good football we should do alright.

Tidbits did not want to jinx Paul and ask him about his current field goal streak :)

Jewel BitsAn indulgent rant about indulgence

wearing t-shirts with “Eat Me Raw” on the front, just keep on shucking. There’s plenty of fresh, just-flown-in oysters from both coasts to choose from, and a great menu of other things too, like the scallops galette (scallops dredged in shredded potato, fried, and served with plum sauce), haida candy (salmon cured in peppercorns and maple syrup), awesome clam chowder, and even a nice sirloin steak. My favorites are the pan fried oysters, succulent, fat, crispy little babies served with the most perfect tartar sauce, best washed down with a crisp Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc, filled to the very top of the glass Rodney’s-style so you have to slurp it like a common hobo. Take note of happy hour, known here as “Low Tide”, from 3pm-6pm where deals can be had on all that fried and crispy goodness.

#6: Rodney’s oyster House www.rohvan.com

Rodney’s is yet another haunt my posse and I have frequented until the wee hours (there’s a theme here, I know). But truly, no visit to the ‘Couv would be complete without a meal at Rodney’s. It’s comfy and familiar and usually packed to the rafters with regulars downing oysters and beer at the bar while the staff, handsome strapping boys

a glass of prosecco from the bar, and wait it out. It’s worth it. The food is simple and fun, just like the atmosphere, and overeating is encouraged by the sweet and friendly servers urging you to try both the pizzas and the pastas… And with the smells wafting out of the semi-open kitchen, you’re going to eat as much as you bloody well can. Start with the crostini (my favorite is the chicken liver), some of their amazing meatballs, and maybe the escarole salad, and then tuck into the orecchiette with sausage and rapini, the spaghetti bolognese, and a couple of pizzas– the prosciutto with arugula and roasted garlic is insanely satisfying, as is the ricotta with roasted tomato. And wash it all down with a nice bottle of Dolcetto, please. For me.

doN’T Be sHeePIsH!We owe a lot to sheep. These animals provide us with wool for sweaters, socks, coats and more as well as meat to eat and milk to drink or to make into cheese. • There are over 900 breeds of sheep in the world. Only about 40 breeds are raised in America, with Texas being the state that has the most. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the inventory of sheep and lamb in the United States in July 2010 was almost 7 million. • Sheep are gentle, timid and quiet animals. They graze on short, tender grasses and clover. They graze for an average of seven hours per day! • Many stories have been told of sheep being so stupid that they will follow each other off a cliff. This is due to their flock mentality, and it truly can happen. However, there have been studies and observations that show that some sheep are pretty smart.• In the Western United States, where sheep are

still overseen by shepherds in some mountainous areas, and rodeos are big entertainment, mutton busting is a fun event to watch. This is for small children, 4 to 7 years old, weighing less than 50 pounds (23 kg). The kids try to ride sheep bareback across the arena. The goal is to ride for

six seconds hanging on to the sheep’s wool. Most riders don’t make it that long as the wooly sheep dislodge them quickly. The kiddos do wear helmets for protection, and adults are close by to assist. • Sheep provide high-quality, useful products. Most sheep need to be

sheared once a year and provide from 2 to 30 pounds (1 to 14 kg) of wool annually. Most sheep live 10 to 12 years, so they provide a lot of wool in their lifetimes. Some sheep, of course, are used for meat, milk and cheese. The best meat is from lambs. • Most lambs are born in the spring and are considered full grown at six months. So, when you hear that, “Mary had a little lamb,” it was a baby less than a year old. ■

Ten Thousand Villages celebrates years of Fair events!

On October 1st, the four Ten Thousand Villages’ stores in Vancouver will join Festival Sales and other stores across Canada to celebrate with displays, videos, gift basket draws, refreshments and entertainment. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to tell stories, answer questions and to serve Ten Thousand Villages limited edition Celebration Blend coffee.

At the Commercial Drive Store, there will be a Japanese Tea Ceremony, a Henna artist, musicians, authors of the cookbook, Mennonite Girls Can Cook, and a birthday cake cutting ceremony, “Ten Thousand Villages has been a presence in Vancouver since the ‘80’s with the original store on Fraser Street, thanks to hundreds of volunteers,”says Granville Island Store Manager, Roxanne Cave. “Since 2000, 4 other stores have opened in bustling neighborhoods around the City and are well-supported by the local community. It is very exciting to chart the growth of Fair Trade in Vancouver and to be showcasing and celebrating Villages’ amazing history.”

Dear Busy:My mother says it’s not worth writing to you because my issue is old as the hills and therefore boring and not worth space. I need to know what to say to a guy who keeps being really nice to me. He makes me feel bad because I don’t really like him, you know? He’s cute and smart and all that but sort of geeky and mostly uncool. You know what I mean? How can I get him to go away without hurting his feelings? I mean, I could be his friend but I always want to sigh and roll my eyes when he says something nice or offers to buy me a coffee. What should I do?Signed: Whipper Snapper

Dear Whipper How old is your mom anyway? Ask her if she’s worth the space? Did she pass down some gene that makes you only attracted to another person if they are abusive, stupid and rude? There is a very old saying, “the geek shall inherit the earth” and those who hang with them are a lucky posse. It’s from some religious holy book or something like that. Regardless, I doubt if this guy is interested in lifetime commitment at this point in his life. You said he was intelligent, right? Regardless, every girl needs a hetero BFF. Hang with him, learn from him, tell him your troubles, and tell him, “hey dude, you’re cute and smart and nice and I could help you find someone who’s worthy of you.” Maybe someday you’ll look in the mirror and see somebody worthy. Keep looking!
