Dearest Abigail, The second day of July, 1776, will be memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding

generations, as the great Anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought

to be solemnized with pomp, shews, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and

illuminations, from one end of the

continent to the other, from this time forward forever.

You will think me transported with enthusiasm; but I am not. I am well aware of the toil, and blood, and treasure, that

it will cost us to maintain this declaration, and support and defend

these states. Yet, through all the gloom, I can see the rays of light and glory; I can see that the end is more than worth all

the means, and that posterity will triumph, although you and I may rue,

which I hope we shall not.Happy Birthday America. - John

On July 1, 1964, the first ferry vessel departed the Lewes terminal at 6:47 a.m., carrying eight vehicles and 15 passengers. The 17 mile trip takes about 85 minutes aboard the fleet. In addition to 14 million vehicles, the ferry service has served more than 42 million passengers in its history.

Today, Sunday, June 29th, a shroud will come down to reveal a sidewalk made with “legacy” brick pavers, sold to

commemorate the ferry’s 50th anniversary. The unveiling, which will also occur on the Cape May side, is part of a two-day celebration, June 28-29. (Cape May

will mark the anniversary on June 28 and Lewes on June 29.)The Cape May-Lewes Ferry, operated by the Delaware River & Bay Authority, has good reason to celebrate. Since that first official voyage, the service has

carried more than 43 million passengers and 14 million vehicles across the 17-mile mouth of

the bay.

• Yield: Makes 12 bratwurst, serves 6 to 12...unless you’re in New Castle. Better make more!

• Equipment: 1½ cups hickory, oak or other wood chips, soaked in water or beer to cover for 30 minutes then drained; toothpicks

• For the topping:• 1 each yellow, red, orange & green bell pepper, cut into 2-inch strips• Ingredients• 1 large onion, peeled and cut into 12 wedges • 2 tbsps extra virgin

olive oil, plus 2 tbsps for grilling the bread • Coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 12 Wisconsin bratwurst • 2 baguettes • 1/4 cup German-style mustard • 3 cups sauerkraut, well drained

Set up your grill for direct grilling and preheat to high. Place the peppers and onions in a large bowl and toss with 2 tbsps of the olive oil, salt, and pepper. Place the veggies in a wire grill basket and grill until golden brown, 6 to 10 minutes, shaking the basket so they brown evenly. Return the grilled vegetables back to the bowl. Can be prepared ahead to this stage. An hour before serving, set up your grill for indirect grilling and preheat to medium. Brush and oil the grill grate. Arrange the brats on the grate over the drip pan away from the heat. Toss the wood chips on the coals. Indirect grill the brats until crusty and golden brown on the outside and cooked through, 30 to 40 minutes. Use an instant-read meat thermometer to check for doneness — insert the probe in one end toward the center of the brat — it should read 160 degrees F. There is no need to turn the brats — remember, you’re indirect grilling.Meanwhile slice one end off each baguette so you can butt them together. Cut each baguette almost in half lengthwise through the top. Open up the baguette and brush the inside with the remaining 2 tbsps of olive oil.Finishing When the brats are cooked, transfer to a foil pan. Place the baguettes on the grill and indirect grill to warm, 5 minutes.Assembling the mile-long brat sandwiches, slather the inside of the baguettes with mustard and butt up them end to end to make a long sandwich. Line up the smoked brats in the sandwich. Top with the sauerkraut, and finally, the grilled peppers and onions. Let everyone admire the sandwich whole, then cut crosswise with a serrated knife into individual bratwurst lengths for serving.

On a picture perfect day last Monday, Mayor Reese welcomed the State delegation of DNREC Sec. O’Mara, Sen. Poore, Rep. Mulrooney led by Gov. Markell to dedicate the rebuilt Gambacorta Dike. Reese recalled, “After viewing the dikes from the river, on a boat trip attended by the Governor, I realized just how extensive the damage was, and how fortunate we are in the timing of having the dikes repaired,” said Mayor Don Reese. “Thanks to all who assisted with this project.”

City Council President Ratchford was accompanied by Council members and City Administrator Barthel who said,“I can’t say enough about how important it is to the residents of New Castle that this project was completed in as timely a manner as it was; and how grateful we are to everyone who assisted in making it happen.”“Thousands of hard-working Delaware families rely on these dikes to protect them from the ravages of storms and high water, and I think we all know we dodged a bullet when Sandy came ashore,” Sen. Poore said. “But it was a wakeup call for all of us, and I’m proud of the teamwork among DNREC, the New Castle Conservation District and my partners in the General Assembly for making sure this vital work was given the priority treatment it needed.”

A true Extract from the Journals of the Board of Managers of the New Castle Pier Lottery-- By Order of the Board

G. READ Secretary of the Board of Managers of the New Castle Pier Lottery. The foregoing Resolution has particular interest because of its first mention of a pier “off the wharf of Archibald Alexander and Alexander Harvey.” All of the original piers have long since disappeared largely because they have been included and lost in the extension of the wharves and the one “off the wharf of Archibald Alexander and Alexander Harvey is the only one now existing as a separate structure and capable of visual inspection. We now that Joseph Scott in 1807 says that there were four piers in the harbor and by the Latrobe map in1804 we can assume the exact location of these four piers--one opposite Delaware Street, one opposite Harmony Street, one near that location and one directly opposite Alexander's Alley--the one now remaining on the land now owned by Mr. & Mrs. Horace L. Deakyne.
