President’s MessageIt’s official.... fall is here! The football season is in full swing (GO REDSKINS!!), leaves are changing, fall annuals are being planted and the much loved Pumpkin Spice Lattes have returned to Starbucks. Oh yes, there is much to celebrate!
Equally, there are as many amazing things transpiring within the JLNVB! Our League has been recognized as one of the top 25 non-profit organizations by Hampton Roads Magazine for the “Giving Back Awards.” It was truly an honor to be among such great organizations, many of which we have partnered with over the years, including Leigh’s Friends, ForKids, The Foodbank and many more.
What sets us apart? We are not just women who want to transform communities, we are women with extensive training and skills to make it happen! Since the beginning of the Junior League in 1901, there has always been a strong emphasis on training and education. The JLNVB members benefit from extensive training in leadership and organizational development, communications, community needs assessment, advocacy and fundraising. Through this unique training, League members learn to manage and train volunteers, and strengthen their communities while forming partnerships with other organizations.
Again, it is humbling to be recognized in such a way, but it is no surprise to me. We are continuing our legacy of training in our meetings and retreats, available webinars and on the job training in volunteer positions. The JLNVB has completed almost 100 community hours in just over a month’s time. Everything we do is with the concept of “Giving Back” to our community in mind. Thank you for all you do and all that you give.
Best Wishes,
Melissa Steadman2012-2013 President

News From the GMMThank you for making the first GMM of the 2012-2013 League year a great success! Judging by the energy and enthusiasm present last Wednesday, we can all look forward to a fun and productive year ahead. In case you missed it, here is a brief recap:
• During Merry Minutes, members and their husbands and guests enjoyed cocktails and dined on delicious culinary treats catered by Buttercream & Sprinkles, owned by JLNVB member Christie Ross.
• Melissa Baumann, Director of Interactive Strategies at CINIVA Web Agency, gave us some amazing tips on using social media to advertise and brand the JLNVB. Her training reminded us that our members are our best marketing tool. “Checking in,” tagging, posting, and tweeting can help us reach so many in the community! If you haven’t already, please like our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/JLNVB and follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/JuniorLeagueNVB.
• Signing up for a payment plan is easy for everyone to do! For more information, please contact our treasurer, Julie Stroh, at [email protected].
• Members voted to dedicate community hours to Junior Achievement (www.ja.org), an organization that provides programs in schools and after school settings to teach children about financial literacy, workplace readiness, and entrepreneurship. Our first volunteer opportunity will be Saturday, November 10, from 10:00a.m. - 2:00p.m. at Norfolk State University.
Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.09
On Saturday, September 22, members volunteered at the Heart of Ghent 10K and Kid’s Fun Run, which was held on the historic streets of Ghent in Norfolk. This event rings in the fall season with a fit, festive, charitable, family-oriented run/walk through the scenic neighborhood. People of all ages participated in the event, even our very own Administrative VP Maura Boswell.
The mission at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Norfolk (RMHC-Norfolk) is to provide a “home away from home” for families with children facing medical challenges and to also support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children. On Tuesday, September 25th, we were able to assist in that mission as members purchased numerous food items and prepared a delicious chicken and rice dinner on site for the families.

Many of you may wonder, what exactly is the role of an At-Large Director? The Placement Guide defines the role as, “the liaison between the membership and the Board”. This means that the Board of the JLNVB wants you to be heard. If you have an awesome idea that you would like to share with the leadership of JLNVB, please let the At-Large Director know. The At-Large Director can also clarify decisions from the Board that you may have questions on. Please do not hesitate to ask questions. The At-Large Director aides members in resolving membership related concerns or issues; however, please understand that the At-Large Director is not meant to replace your advisor - that is still your go-to person - but the At-Large Director is your other advocate within the League.
The At-Large Director is also here to share the many wonderful accomplishments of our League members. One of the reasons many of us joined the League is to be a part of a dynamic team. We want to celebrate our victories (in and out of the league) and also support each other in our challenges. We need your help in keeping the At-Large Director informed so we can continue to encourage each other. Please contact Ruth Elkins, our At-Large Director, and share your ideas and concerns. Ruth can be reached at [email protected] or (757)469-2971. Ruth also needs your Member of the Month nominations. She wants to know who is going above and beyond so they can get recognized for all of their hard work.
Thank you, Ruth, for your continued service to JLNVB and for the integral role you play as our At-Large Director!

At-Large Director

• Know Your Objective – Be clear as to why you are having the meeting and the outcome you hope to achieve.
• Set an Agenda – Clearly organize what items are to be covered and plan accordingly for the timeframe you have set for the meeting. Don’t belabor items or discussions that may require a follow-up discussion. Stick to the topics at hand.
• Invite the Right People – Be sure that key members/decision makers are in attendance (or have provided a report to be shared by someone else if they cannot attend). If it is not imperative that someone attend your meeting, do not waste their time requiring them to attend.
• Note Taker – Assign a designated attendee to take minutes of the meeting so they can be distributed to all appropriate members post meeting. This is a great way to keep those that couldn’t attend up to speed on what happened as well as keeping everyone on track with designated deadlines.
• Close with a Plan of Action – Briefly restate the assignments given to those in attendance with the assigned deadlines and make sure all understand next steps. Ask if there are any remaining questions & provide feedback.

A Guide to Leading a Productive Meeting
Meet with a Purpose

Easy Steps to Entertaining for ClustersSubmitted by Christie Ross, Creator of Confectionary Concoctions & All Things YummyButtercream & Sprinkles
I have a passion for cooking and entertaining. I love planning the menu, finding the perfect decorating accompaniments to accent the menu or theme, and the way it looks when it’s all put together. Of course, the most gratification comes from the smiles and happy tummies as guests are enjoying what I’ve labored over. Although it may be painstaking to tend to the tiniest of details to ensure my guests have the best experience possible, I take time to have some fun and I don’t let it become stressful. As November approaches, in lieu of our regular GMM, we will be attending cluster meetings at the homes of various JLNVB members throughout our region. For some, the thought of cooking and preparing can be stressful, but it need not be. Here are some tips for a stress-free party. I’ve also included a few of my favorite Junior League recipes.
Tips:• Keep it simple.
• Use the JLNVB cookbooks, Toast to Tidewater and Tidewater on the Halfshell, for recipe
inspiration.
• Michael’s, AC Moore, TJ Maxx and World Market, as well as local boutiques are great places
for decorating ideas and items; let your budget be your guide, but there’s nothing wrong
with keeping it simple.
• Plan your menu and create a prep sheet to stay organized; make as much as you can
ahead of time.
• Presentation matters. We eat with our eyes and the best tasting food will not be appealing
if it is not presented well. Don’t worry about all of the serving plates, bowls, etc. matching;
an eclectic mix is much more appealing for an intimate gathering (unless you’re going for
the catered look). Pinterest is a wonderful resource for presentation ideas!
• Don’t forget the ice.
• Garnish party platters with fresh herbs, edible flowers, and fruit.
• Most importantly, relax and have fun. I once read, “A relaxed
host makes for happy guests.”

One question I often get from people is, “How much should I make?” Here’s an easy guide (per person):• Eight appetizer pieces: appetizers should consist of two to three bites• Three ounces of dip or salsa (about 1/3 cup per person)• One and a half pieces of dessert• Punch - One gallon for every 10 guests• Beer, wine and cocktails - One to two drinks per person, per hour
Here are a few of my favorite Junior League recipes:
Chocolate Truffles (makes 6 dozen) from Toast to Tidewater
• 1 lb 2 oz package of OreoTM cookies, finely crushed
• 8 oz cream cheese, softened
• 2 tablespoons Grand Marnier liqueur, optional
• 10 oz German chocolate*
• 2 Tablespoons paramount crystals (found in candy supply store)*
• 4 oz white chocolate, melted
1) Mix OreoTM cookies and cream cheese with an electric mixer on slow speed until completely
mixed2) Stir Grand Marnier liqueur into cookie crumb mixture; mix again
3) Roll into 1-inch balls and place on cookie sheet lined with parchment or wax paper; freeze
for several hours
4) Place German chocolate in a double boiler over low heat; melt (Christie’s note: microwave
directions also available on box of chocolate)
5) Stir paramount crystals into chocolate as needed to thin for dipping
6) Remove balls from freezer; dip in chocolate, covering completely
7) Place back on cookie sheet with parchment or waxed paper and return to freezer
8) Drizzle firm chocolate balls with melted white chocolate for garnishing
9) Store in freezer in a freezer-safe container until ready to serve. The truffles thaw quickly
*dipping chocolate found at local cake decorating stores can be substituted for German
chocolate/paramount crystals
