March MadnessCan you believe that we are into March already? I love March, it signals to me that the really hot weather has now passed us by (well hopefully anyway), it is the beginning of autumn, my favourite season, and above all else it is the beginning of the football season, Go Eagles ….. I have a feeling that 2013 is going to be great year for both of our W.A. teams, maybe an Eagles and Dockers Grand Final – won’t that upset the applecart !!! But that’s enough of a digression as I have some interesting and newsworthy updates to share with you about our wonderful SwanCare Group community. For starters, let me kick off this months article by reminding our residents of the fabulous movie night that we held a couple of weeks ago under the stars (and a little bit of precipitation) at the Bentley Park Outdoor Cinema. This evening was a resounding success, we had over 150 residents attend, in pretty warm conditions I might add, and enjoy the beautiful movie “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”. This was the first time that we have ventured into an outdoor movie experience, and judging by the feedback, I am pretty confident that this won’t be the last time that we put on a community event such as this. I would like to sincerely thank the hard-working staff who gave up their

time to assist on the evening, and special

thanks to Karen Parker and George Palmer

for their untiring commitment and support.

spirit and it is events such as this that I

believe epitomises what we are all about.

On the subject of community. Residents are

no doubt very familiar with our successful

and well received Community Aged Care

In-Home Service that we are delivering into

the homes of many of our residents. This

service is growing in leaps and bounds, so

much so that we have decided to provide the

Community Aged Care Team with their own

separate building and offices. This service

relies on direct contact with residents, and

often at the initial stages when decisions are made on the service delivery requirements that are needed, confidential and private information is shared. Much in the same way that you share information with your doctor. It is therefore this need for privacy, combined with the opportunity to further improve the customer service aspects that we feel that this team will be able to operate better if they have a dedicated office located on the Bentley Park site. In the next few weeks you will begin to see one of the older style units on Talbot Drive transformed into the new Community Care Office. Upon completion this building will be occupied by Leasa and Heather, together with the Community Care Team of Linda, Zoe and Lea. Call in for a cuppa when the building is up and running, the girls will be only too keen to put the billy on for you. I want to continue with the theme of community spirit and how this regularly revolves around the integration of residents with staff. One of our key objectives in the organisation’s Strategic Plan is to ensure that we create opportunities for enrichment of residents and employees. A recent example of this was when our Administrative team ventured down to our south west community of Australind Rise. Many of our administrative staff have daily contact with the residents at Australind, but up until recently these residents were only a voice at the end of the telephone. This situation has now been remedied and now our staff and residents can put a face to the voice. Our staff were simply overwhelmed with the generous hospitality from the Australind Rise residents, so much so that the admin team are very keen to make this trip part of their annual calendar, and why not?

Rowethorpe Uniting Church Rowethorpe Uniting Church Weekly Sunday Services are conducted in the Rowethorpe Chapel 10:00am with visiting Ministers. Contact Pam Hind – 9470 4139.

Church Services at Kingia Some Bentley Park residents may not be aware that when the Kingia Care Facility was opened in 2009, the Swan Room was furnished and set up as a Chapel. Monthly Church Services are held by the Anglican (4th Tues 1.30), Catholic (1st Fri 10.30) and Uniting Church (3rd Wed, 10.30), and residents of the village are welcome to attend. CEO’s Report

The Community at Australind has a real excitement about it and thanks to the hard-working efforts of our residents and locally based staff, the look and feel of the village is simply stunning, something which we should all feel very proud of indeed. On another matter, again tied to community is the linkage that we enjoy with the Curtin University. SwanCare Group is a large community itself and we see part of our role is to enhance and encourage linkages with the broader community. In this regard, we will soon be hosting a group of some 100 Curtin University Planning Students as they undertake a case study in Town Planning, using the Bentley Park site as their focus area. This project is being orchestrated by one of our Board Members, Julie Brunner, who just so happens to be a lecturer in Planning and Strategy at Curtin University. This is a great opportunity for us to glean some insight and have some fresh, young and vibrant eyes cast their views on the planning and development potential of our Bentley site. The students will engage with residents, staff and from time to time you will see them on our site as they acquaint themselves with our large community. The information that we receive from this case study will be great benefit and will be useful input into the enhancement of our site’s overall Master-Plan.

Residents’ WorkshopAfter a reasonable period of down-time, I am pleased to announce that the residents’ workshop is now re-opened.

Residents will recall that we were forced to close down the workshop due to the fact that some of the equipment was getting well past its use-by date, and we were becoming increasingly concerned that some of the users were having difficulty in

safely handling the equipment.

Due to the hard-working efforts of two of

our very keen “handy-man” residents in Karl

Wieman and Jim Leavy, we have developed

a whole new workshop, with enhanced

equipment, and much safer work practices

for all to enjoy. I encourage you to become

re-acquainted with the workshop. To do so

please contact our Maintenance Supervisor

George Palmer who will be only too pleased

to assist.

And finally … a plug for a worthy cause ….

Maureen Thompson, a hard-working village

volunteer and a previous Villager of the Year

recipient, is once again participating in the

Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest

Shave. Having shaved off her hair last

year, Maureen this time around is opting

for a unique colouring. To assist her in

raising funds, Maureen is seeking the help

of residents to pledge money in support of

her new colour. Residents can nominate a

colour and the one that receives the greatest

level of funding will be the one which she will

be transformed into. At the time of writing

this was a bright orange. Won’t that be

impressive to see. So please get behind a

fellow resident and support this great cause.

Last year Maureen raised over $3,000 and

hopes to better that effort this year.

chairing our meeting.

After 7 years of hard work and dedication as

Show Coordinator, Beryl Davis has decided

to step aside and take things easy. I know

you will all join me in thanking Beryl for

building up our show from scratch to the very

successful event it has become.

Our Show this year will be held Saturday

26th and Sunday 27th October. Please make

sure you note these dates in your diary. If

you haven’t already made a start, now is

a good time to begin planning what you

are going enter this year. If you have any

requests for new categories, or ideas for our

Show, just give me a ring and our committee

will consider them at our next meeting. The

Schedule will be delivered to everyone as

soon as we have finished compiling it. We are

hoping to have lots of new residents taking

part as well as our very loyal supporters from

past years.

Library NewsThe winner of our first month’s $20 Woolworths Gift Card. Congratulations to Mrs. Reita Latto of Richard Cleaver Lodge (ticket Red B50) as the first winner of our first competition. Hopefully this will encourage more residents to use the Village Library. We are just like a “real” library, only smaller, but still able to supply any books you may wish to read. If it is not on the shelf I will do my best to supply it at no cost to you. We also have a large range of DVDs which are free to borrowers. I hope to run this competition for at least six months, though it may be extended if proved popular with the residents. To be in it all you have to do is join the Bentley Park Library. We are situated at the rear of the Administration building and we are open Monday, Wednesday & Friday’s from 9am – 12 noon. Yours in books

Kingia/Tandara High Care Auxiliary Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, 26 March, in the Auditorium, commencing at 1.30 p.m., when our speaker will be Dr. Joan Pope, OAM, who will discuss Music, Movement and Memories, in a very entertaining way. Dr. Pope has a PhD in Music Education. In 2001 she was presented with the Medal of the Order of Australia and in 2006, the Chancellor’s Medal of the UWA. She is currently Vice President of Girl Guides W.A. Annual fee of $3 is due at this meeting and we will also have the usual raffle and lucky numbers. Afternoon tea will be available at $1. All residents are welcome, especially those new to the Village; and gentlemen are welcome, some of whom are already loyal members of the Auxiliary. Carol Greenaway, President

Bentley Park NewsBentley Park - RowethorpeThe first meeting this year for Neighbourhood Watch delegates is Wednesday 13th of March. It will be held in the coffee lounge 2nd floor of the Admin building at 9.30am. Unfortunately I am unable to drive the bus, as I dislocated my shoulder while on holiday.

Flu VaccinationsDr Aru (Aru Natchimuthoo) will be administering Influenza (Flu) vaccinations for 2013 for his patients at the Swan Medical Centre, Graham Cres, Bentley on the following dates: Monday 18 March from 2.30pm to 3pm & Monday 25 March from 2.30pm to 3pm. No bookings required. The National Launch of the Influenza Vaccination Program is scheduled for the 15th of March 2013. The Health Dept of WA plans to deliver the vaccines by that time.

Stratton Luncheon/ConcertPeter & Shirley will continue to organise and host a Luncheon Concert at the Stratton Centre throughout 2013, on the first Friday of each month from February to December, 11:30am – 2:30pm. Entertainers have been arranged for each of these months. These functions comprise of a Fish & Chip meal served at the table – wine & soft drinks with an hour concert by quality performers – afternoon tea or coffee with cakes. The all-inclusive cost is $10. Residents Advisory Council

I have recently discovered most residents are not aware that, in addition to our usual role of liaising between residents and administration in the village, the VRAC has undertaken to contact new residents [providing they have agreed at the time of entry] and offer to familiarise them with various aspects of the village. Our site is very large and by taking them on a conducted tour to show them where the shop, library, Op shop, Spritz Cafe etc. are located and where the various clubs conduct their activities, the new resident feels a little less apprehensive about what is a considerable life-change. I know that the

welcome extended by the VRAC has been very much appreciated. A reminder that our morning coffee meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month at 9:30am in the Auditorium, followed by morning tea. Do come along to share in the information provided by our guest speakers and the social interaction among residents. If you have any queries, please contact one of the council members listed below. Bentley Park Social Club

The provisional Calendar of Events for

the year is as follows. However some

unavoidable changes may occur at the last

minute. Details will be made available, as

relevant.

Well, the year is racing along and we are

already planning events for March, April

and May, but first thank you to everyone

who attended the Celebration of Australia

Day, and who therefore enjoyed the earlier

time and the ‘Sausage Sizzle’. It has been

decided that in future the event will continue

to be held in the early morning, for ‘brunch’.

The Board Members who attended, enjoyed

themselves overall during the proceedings

but especially by being able to chat to

residents. Committee Members were

reinforced by a team of volunteers for the

day, and everyone is sincerely thanked for

their efforts.

St Patrick’s Day is on Sunday, 17th March

and a free Giant Afternoon Tea is planned

between 2pm-4pm in the Auditorium.

The ‘Heel and Toe Band’ will provide

music, there will be games and raffles,

and prizes available for the Best Dressed

Male and Female. Places are limited, and

for catering purposes please collect your

‘must have’ tickets on Monday 11th March

2013, between 8.30am – 9.30am in the

Administration Foyer.

On Saturday night, April 6th, a Quiz Night will

be held in the Auditorium. Teams of five are

to compete for a variety of prizes, so bring

along your wealth of knowledge - and trivia.

For this event you will also require a ticket,

as places will again be limited.

The Bentley Park Social Club has the

opportunity to have a dance troupe to visit

the village. These young dancers will be

attending a dance competition in the USA

and they will be having their final rehearsals

here. In the Auditorium on Sunday 24th

March from 9:30am to 10:30am. Everyone

is welcome. Please come and show your

support to these dancers.

Op Shop

The Op Shop continues to be a busy place,

especially with it’s Dollar Sale in full swing

during February. At the beginning of March,

the stock will be changed over, ready for the

winter season. (Difficult to imagine cool/cold

weather at the moment!)

Newspaper RecyclingWhile some of our recyclers have taken well

deserved time off over summer, the recycling

of newspapers continues to flourish and

yet another truckload will be ready to roll

in the next few weeks. Thank you for your

commitment to providing newspapers

for recycling, and to those who do not

send along ‘the glossies’ but place them

in a recycling bin. Cans were sent away

again this week and with the hot weather

continuing, they are again building up.

Handicraft Thank you for your support in 2012. We are a very small group and with your help we were able to give $500 to Waminda & $1000 to Tandara/Kingia to purchase various games and other interesting items for the residents. The Snooker Players Association The Snooker Players Association is situated on the second (Social) floor of the Administration Building. Playing sessions are held Monday to Friday from 1–3pm. New members are welcome and we would especially welcome ‘recently-moved-in’ residents. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for many years, as the ‘old touch’ will soon come back! Theatre Go-ers Club Open to all residents of Bentley Park our next theatre ticket sale will be for the visit on Friday 12th April to the Old Mill Theatre in South Perth, to see the stage version of Neil O’Neill’s play ‘No Bed of Roses’. This play is semi-autobiographical written and directed by Irish born Neil O’Neil. The play takes place in London in the early 1960’s. When a controlling women invites a stranger in to her house – and life, without realising who he is or what he really wants. This leads to circumstances beyond her control. Never invite someone into your home without considering the consequences. We leave the village by bus at 7.10 pm prompt and will go directly to the ‘the Old Mill ‘Theatre in South Perth. Tickets are $25.00 each ( cash with order) and will go on sale 8.15am on Monday 11th March at the Stratton Centre. Sherry/Juice on arrival and return bus travel are included. All we need is someone who has experience with Hotmail and Gmail and a basic knowledge of MS Word and MS Excel. It’s not hard, just helping those who have limited computer experience. SWAN VILLAGE BOWLING CLUB First, my thanks to Tom Brazier for taking over the reins while I was on holiday!! in New Zealand for three months. Our Inter club match with the Undercroft Bowling Club on Feb 6th went very well, we were the Victors this time, the scores were 74 to 61 with several games ending in draws. The evening began with a sausage sizzle, thanks to Jack and Bill for slaving over a [Hot Barbecue], also thanks to the ladies who always do an excellent job preparing the salads, serving and laying out the tables etc. After the game we had our usual Happy Hour which everyone enjoyed. By the time the next issue of Tidings arrives, the [New] surface should have been laid!! Work is due to commence on Feb 25th 26th it will take approx one week. Please make a note in your diary or calendar for our Half Yearly general meeting to be held on Thursday March 7th at 10am we would like to see a good attendance. Our annual Barbecue is on Saturday March 9th starting at 6pm. Cost $8. Another date to remember is March 23rd for the MURRAY RANYARD SHEILD. Please keep a check on the notice board for all the dates and times. Fran Williams, our social convener will be resigning from the committee, Fran has done a first class job organising all our social events along with the other ladies, she will be sorely missed.
