About the Paper Tiger and the NZPTOA The Paper Tiger is a catamaran designed by Ron Given of New Zealand in 1968. It is widely sailed in New Zealand and Australia. Class rules allow hull construction from plywood, kevlar, fibreglass or carbon fibre. The boat is suitable for home built construction. The rig features an aluminium mast with a fully battened sail. Class rules allow adjustable downhaul, outhaul, kicker and lower forestays. This provides a wide sailing envelope over a range of wind and sea conditions. Optimum sailing conditions are 5-25 knots. Centre boards and rudders can be retractable. New Zealand Championship Regatta's have been held since 1969. Trans Tasman Interdominion regattas are held between the top 10 sailors from each country. The NZ Paper Tiger Class is governed by the NZ Paper Tiger Owners Association (NZPTOA). The class is affiliated to Yachting New Zealand. There are area representatives throughout New Zealand who can assist you in, joining the class and providing technical support and encouragement. For more information visit the website at www.papertiger.org.nz.

This is really a case of back to the future (I have a workmate who owns a genuine DeLorean). I last edited the Tiger Rag for a couple years in the early nineties, and now I’m back. We’re in a different technology era….online or email, you choose, but I’m not slaving over a photocopier and stuffing hundreds of envelopes. – oh if you still want a printed copy I’m sure that can be arranged – call me or Lynley. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the rag. With each little piece we receive, each little golden drop of gossip, the rag certainly grows, … and grows and grows. We’ve got loads of pages, reports and results here, a great restoration story, as well as some funnies (and even a recipe!). Keep up the contributions – we can’t put a rag together without you. Enjoy….. Glenn Syman PT 2922 Unplugged What are your favourite sailing sayings? If you don't know the knot...tie a lot. What are your favourite sailing sayings? The President’s Report The 2014 Nationals at Lyttelton had a big turnout with 42 sailors competing. We were very pleased with the large turnout of competitors and the strong performance from the south island competitors. I would like to thank Bob Nicholls, Trevor George, Pierce Pendergast and Ross May for organising the event for us and the race management team for their support and running the event. The contest provided tricky conditions for the fleet and race committee a like. With a number of light to medium shifty races and one north westerly that made for a challenging contest. Congratulations go out to Mark Orams for winning the national championship from Dave Shaw and Hayden Percy. Stuart Morrish had a great regatta winning the B Grade and finishing 11th.. Harry Dawber from Pigeon Bay won the C Grade finishing in 28th place in his first nationals. Remy Thomassen was awarded the Ron Given Trophy for the most improved performance. Lynley Manning won the ladies trophy. Mark Orams, Bob Preston, Ian Maclennan and Dylan Taylor who picked up the Veteran, Grand Master, Great Grand Master’s and Junior trophies respectively. Scott Pedersen won the award for the fastest new boat and best turned out boat. It was great to see strength across the fleet with top 10 performances from Nelson (2), Auckland (3), Napier (2), Muritai (1), Worser Bay (1) and New Plymouth (1). The AGM discussed a number of issues which are detailed in the AGM minutes in this edition. Thank you to Lynley and Glenn for taking on the Tiger Rag this season. Ann Taylor has agreed to cover the Secretary’s role for the next few months. Robin Conner will administer the NZPTOA website with input from each of us. Jamie Sutherland will continue as International Measurer and Treasurer. Chris Reid has taken on the National Measurer’s role. The North Island Fresh water series went down to the wire with Hayden Percy winning by one point from Gareth Moore while Scott Pedersen won the Grand Prix Series by one point from Hayden Percy. Stuart Taylor has done a great job setting up both series this year and it is very pleasing to see boats travelling as it builds up strength across the country and keeps the class strong. Dave Shaw, Mike Hood, Scott Barker and John Coplestone had a challenging time at the A Class Worlds. Dave Shaw was the top performer of our paper tiger sailors with a very credible 18th. It was impressive to see the speed of the top boats when they foiled down wind. They were finishing while the middle of the fleet still had a beat and run to go. Planning for the 2014 Internationals in Australia will start shortly. Easter is early next year and our nationals are in mid January so we wont have much time in February to get organised.. We will probably need to load boats in late February to ensure that they arrive on time. The plan is work up the details and costs between now and September so that we know what we are up for by September. This will help with budgeting. Our plan is to take 20 boats to Australia for the Internationals. As the end of the season approaches the winter maintenance programme starts. Time to reflect on what needs to be done and to get started early. Mark Hatch 3075 Bad Boy Checked your trailer lately? The Measurer’s Report Hi all this is my first official year as class measurer. If you have had trouble getting information from me I apologise, as I do not look at my email as often as I should, but rest assured I will get better and I will remember to check my emails more regularly. On a lighter note my first official duty was to run the measuring at the Nationals in Naval Point. Everything went smoothly with only one boat out of the three that needed measuring had a minor issue. That was dealt with at the time. It was a very pleasing start to my measuring role. I also ran the measuring jigs over a few of the faster boats and revealed a few surprising things not to be revealed this time maybe in the future. Chris Reid PT 3094 Shelly The Publicity Officer’s Report

This position is still currently vacant, and vitally important. Rowdy has done a supreme job of setting up an excellent network and now we need that special someone to pick this up and keep it moving along. Rowdy has set up a beaut facebook page, and an email group with contacts at organisations such as crew.org, sailworld etc for the various communications he sent out. From this has come a feature in the Seaspray magazine, and of course on the TV One News spot during the 2013 Nationals. He was also involved in getting the Boat Show stand off the ground. So it’s all pretty well set up and ready for you… Please give this serious consideration;; this could be your year to do your bit for the fleet. Please contact a member of the exec with your queries. A little old lady answered a knock on the door one day, to be confronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner. 'Good morning,' said the young man. 'If I could take a couple minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in high-powered vacuum cleaners... “Go away!” said the old lady. ''I'm broke and haven't got any money!'' and she proceeded to close the door.. Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door and pushed it wide open... ''Don't be too hasty!'' he said. ''Not until you have at least seen my demonstration.'' And with that, he emptied a bucket of horse manure onto her hallway carpet. ''Now, if this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse manure from your carpet, Madam, I will personally eat the remainder.'' The old lady stepped back and said, ''Well let me get you a fork, 'cause they cut off my electricity this morning."

The President’s Report AGM 2014 (Presented at NZPTOA AGM, Naval Point Club, January 2014)

2013 has been another successful year for the New Zealand Paper Tiger Fleet. Membership and active fleet numbers are up with increases in new and past sailors joining the class building on the trend in 2012 and 2013. Junior membership continues to rise.

The 2013 Nationals in Maraetai had a big turnout with 47 entries. The contest was won by Dave Shaw from Scott Pederson and Ryan Leatham. It was the 3rd time Dave has won the Paper Tiger Nationals. Dave was dominant with 6 wins. Mark Orams and Dylan Taylor each picked up a gun. Mike Hood had a great regatta winning the B Grade in his new boat and finishing 7th overall. Leo Pritt won the C Grade finishing in 26th place in his first nationals, a great performance by a junior at his first PT regatta.

Mike Hood was awarded the Ron Given Trophy for the most improved performance after gaining 15 places from the previous years results. Lynley Manning won the ladies trophy. Mark Orams, Bob Preston and Ian Maclennan picked up the Veteran, Grand Master and Great Grand Master’s trophies respectively. Mike Hood won the award for the fastest new boat and Les Gallagher the best turned out boat. Denis and Ryan Leatham won the NZPTOA Family Challenge trophy. It was great to see strength across the fleet with top 10 performances from Nelson (1), Torbay (1), Tauranga (1), Worser Bay (1), Napier (2), Muritai (2) and New Plymouth (2).

We would like to thank Steve Tennant, Nigel Hayton, and the Maraetai Yacht Club for their support in organising and running the event and for their hospitality throughout the contest. Everyone enjoyed the atmosphere at the club and Omana Park and appreciated the time and effort put in by the Maraetai Yacht Club to run the 2013 nationals.

The Internationals were held at the Muritai Yacht Club in April. We were very pleased to have 17 boats travelling from Australia for the contest.

A record fleet of 50 sailors fought to win the international title, with Dave Shaw winning convincingly and becoming the first New Zealander to take back to back individual titles. Five race wins and a second place left Dave 3 points ahead of second placed Bryan. New Zealand won the teams’ trophy back from the Australians. Overall points were NZ 330 AUS 589.

We are delighted with Dave Shaw’s win and regaining the Teams trophy. Scott Barker sailed a great regatta to finish 3rd by one point from Ryan Leatham. Stuart Taylor was first Tui in 12th. Dylan Taylor sailed well to win the International Youth trophy for the second time, finishing in 19th place.

We would like to pass our appreciation to the Muritai Sailing Club for hosting the Internationals over Easter. We would like to acknowledge the outstanding work that was undertaken by John Tattersall and the Organizing Committee for the tireless planning that went into this event. We would like to thank Ken Burt, Lloyd Rance and the start boat, finish boat and rescue boat crews for their work running the contest in some challenging conditions. Also thanks to Ann Montague for arranging billets for the Australian team members and to each of the wonderful host families. Brett Gawn and Robin Connor did a great job compiling the results and updating the MYC website throughout the contest. We would like to pass on our thanks to John, Karen and their families for hosting the prize giving dinner at the Cobar. This was a great venue and provided a fitting finale to the contest. A big thank you to Lynley Manning for designing and organising our shirts.

All of the competitors enjoyed their time at Muritai and the opportunity to spend some time in the Blue Penguin Lounge socializing and enjoying Murray’s cartoons.

2012/2013 North Island Freshwater series was won by Jim Moore. This season’s first NI Freshwater Wairarapa regatta was blown out for a second year in a row. A big thank you to everyone that was involved in preparing for Muritai this year. Ngaroto continues to be a popular venue with sailors travelling from Auckland, Tauranga and New Plymouth to compete. Mark Orams showed us all a clean set of transoms winning this regatta from Mark Bell.

The Boat Show in May provided an opportunity for us to promote the class. Ryan Leatham organised a spot in the Weta centreboard area and prepared the promotional material. Les Gallagher took Arriba and manned the stand from Wednesday to Sunday with support from the Auckland team. We were one of the few classes to man our stand and it paid dividends for us. We got a lot of interest and there is plenty of support for building up the Auckland fleet. This season we targeted the Sir Peter Blake Regatta to promote the class. 22 Paper Tiger skippers travelled from Napier, Wellington and New Plymouth to join the Auckland fleet at the regatta. We were delighted with the opportunity to compete in this exceptional regatta and would like to thank Mark Orams and his family for their hospitality.

The Naval Point club has been busy this year preparing for our Nationals. We are very grateful for the support provided by the organising committee of Bob Nicholls, Trevor George, Pierce Prendergast and Ross May and his race management team for running this year’s event.

A big thank you to this year’s NZPTOA executive. The elected team of ”volunteers” who have given their time to foster membership, resolve measurement issues, track finances and to maintain communication across New Zealand.

Sel Petersen and Chris Reid have been kept busy measuring new boats this year. Jamie Sutherland is our Treasurer. Under his stewardship our funds have continued to grow as covered in his report. It is comforting to have our reserves in such great shape.

Mark Bell has completed his third year as editor for the Tiger Rag and due to family and work commitments has asked that we appoint a new editor. Bonny Johnstone took over the role of Secretary last year and has done a great job for us. Bonny thank you for the support that you have provided to the class in this demanding role.

Robin Conner has just completed a total rebuild of the NZPTOA web site. It was something that Glenn and I have been keen on for a while but we needed someone with the IT and web development smarts and a passion for PT’s to realise the dream. Robin has exceeded both of our expectations and come up with a site that is simply awesome.

The old site was built around a very simple web editor developed in 2000 that was quite challenging to use. Robin has taken the site into the future building the new site with leading edge web tools. It is now much easier to administer, allowing multiple editors and has all of the features to allow it to be viewed on mobile phones and ipads as well as a computer. It has all of the key links we need including ones to the Paper Tiger Face book page and Tiger Rag and includes a great photo Gallery. It’s hosted at the same domain address as before but we now have a lot more storage space.

2014 Paper Tiger Nationals – Navel Point, Lyttelton Race Reports: Thanks to Carey, Robbie, and Trevor for submitting reports for the 2014 Nationals.

Photos sent in by Bob Nicholls Race 3 The merit of a midday race start is clear as we work our way up the harbour in light and patchy air, to be greeted on arrival by a still settling moderate sea breeze from the NE. Coming off day one with two bullets, Mark Orams aka “MARKO” was the man to beat. All sailors had “Animal Printed Pants” imprinted on their race brains, and Marko was seen shortly after the start dipping transoms in a desperate effort to find some clear air. Find some he did and quickly positioned himself back in contention. However, the side show didn’t end there for Marko. Already displaying great skill in rounding marks to win races, he showed he could hit them to, three in fact, and still manage to beat three quarters of the fleet. Dave Shaw also had Animal Printed Pants nightmares and did a bit of rig tweaking overnight. Dave’s race 3 bullet put him front for the first time in the regatta. With gains to be made right across the track, the race course had everything from pressure lines to holes and plenty free floating kelp to keep you on your toes. Carey Johnstone PT 3068 Copy Cat

Go Murray Grimwood Race 6 Having completed race 5, race 6 got moved from central part of harbour to upper harbour, an area boarded by Quail island ,Church Bay and a reef off Magazine Bay. If you went out to the right as Dylan Taylor did you seemed to do very well, but it became a lottery for the rest. Personally I had a good race from following Dylan out to the right, there was some confusion with the race being shortened at the top mark after doing the triangle windward leeward. Personally I am not complaining as I got the best result I have had to date. (good on ‘yer Robbie…finished every race. ED) Robbie Morrison PT 698 Panther

Race 7 Fri 3rd January 2014 The race committee did their best to get in a 7th race. It was postponed until there seemed to be a settling in the weather at 12 to 18 Knot NW wind. The postponement flag was dropped and just as 15 or so boats had launched the wind went off the dial gusting to 30 knots and swinging all over the show. The committee boat signalled race abandonment at around 1.45pm and sailors were sent ashore. There were several capsizes and one broken mast. Bob Nicholls turned downwind to head home. His mast broke clean below the lower hounds and the sail flopped to the deck. Bob was then towed inside the reef and marina without any other damage. Sailors worked in teams catching the incoming boats and assisting them up the ramp. Several boats stayed on the course a bit longer testing their skills against the extreme conditions. Once we all sailors were on land the wind increased further making it necessary to sit on boats or tie them down as they were packed up. Turangi – North Island Champs Report

Congratulations to Hayden Percy – hand being shaken by Turangi’s RO Wally, Photobomb by Jack Turangi - 27 boats, and one of those games of two halves! Not enough wind on Saturday, but a bit of chop, and an excess of wind on Sunday. Terry Valder showed that he had lost nothing of his legendary form, making his tight rig work well in the race 1 - 3 conditions and, from what I saw in the distance, only really being troubled by Gareth Moore in one race. Race 4 on Saturday started in virtually no wind and the chop had flattened off. Decided the committee boat end was not the place to be, and my port tack start at the pin end looked like producing a handy placing heading into the top mark when they abandoned. Damn!! Sunday it blew . The first 2 races were in gusty, washing machine-like conditions. Lots of capsizes which made mark rounding interesting. I learnt that after surviving the gybe mark and dodging several capsized boats, a good look into the glare was worthwhile as suddenly a silhouette of someone standing on the water appeared dead ahead. A quick change of course and I brushed past a turtled Gray Power & Stu Taylor - I knew he was all powerful in the freshwater regatta world, but walking on water!! Race 5, and Greg Shadbolt and Matt Phipps had an unfortunate coming together which resulted in Greg capsized and suffering some damage. My next lesson - get your centreboards down early when heading into the bottom mark in those conditions. An involuntary gybe at the last moment, gybed back and around the buoy, then realised in the confusion I hadn t put my boards down. My tiller extension got caught behind the windward board and I sat on it! Sailed on with a short tiller but hung on to 12th place. Back to the beach for quick repair job and found half the fleet there, either assessing minor damage or having decided enough was enough! In hindsight, conditions for races 6 & 7 had moderated a bit but still big gusts coming through and once on the beach in those conditions it’s too easy to stay there. Well done to Hayden Percy for 2 wins in tough conditions and overall victory. Close back to Scott & Terry, with Peter Robins picking up the other win and 4th overall. A good regatta, but rescue resources were stretched in the Sunday conditions and something to think about for the future, perhaps. John Tattersall PT 600, If Only A catamaran sailing in the frostbite series race is dis-masted and nearly overturned by a large wave. This is reported in the club newsletter as a Catafrostic Dismaster.

Wellington Centre Board Champs Well done to Mike Hood who won the Wellington Centreboard Champs at Worser Bay this last w/e, 2nd Peter Robins and 3rd Andy Brown. Unfortunately only 2 out-of-towners made the regatta, Gareth Moore and Rob Hielkema, both from Auckland – that’s quite a hike so thanks for making the effort to support the Wellingtonians.

North Island Freshwater and Grand Prix Series 2013 / 2014 The first two places overall in both the Fresh Water and Grand Prix series were a hard-fought affair, with only 1 point separating 1st and 2nd place. Congratulations to Hayden Percy, winner of the Fresh-Water series, second Gareth Moore, third Nathan Percy. Congratulations to the winner of the Grand-Prix Series, Scott Pedersen, second Hayden Percy , third Gareth Moore. Scott earns bragging rights, being the first-ever winner of the Grand-Prix Series, for which a special trophy will be awarded. It has been great to see such a good turn-out to the grand-Prix series this season with a total of 60 boats competing. Hope to see you all back next season. Letters to the Editor

Dear Paper Tiger Skippers, In order to make your sailing day a happy one, help us to ensure things on the ramp run smoothly… Label your #@!&#@ trolleys and bow chocks! Yelling – “the one with the orange padding/yellow string/blue wheels” from halfway in does not really work well. An alternative is for you all to come back into the ramp in the exact reverse order that you left it… Oh – and don’t forget to say thank you… Love from your adoring Trolley Dollies xx A Story I was at the bar the other night and overheard three very hefty women talking at the bar. Their accent appeared to be Scottish, so I approached and asked, "Hello, are you three lassies from Scotland?" One of them angrily screeched, "It's Wales , Wales you bloody idiot!" Therefore, I apologised and replied, "I am so sorry. Are you three whales from Scotland?" And that's the last thing I remember.

A Wonderful Restoration Story – PT 533 It was December 2009 when my daughter came along and having the time and money for a sports boat in Westhaven became an unviable option, so off to Australia it went. Between nappies and sleepless nights I kept an eye out for a boat that would keep me sailing and fit in with the new family regime. My wife Lucy and I normally sailed together, but that wasn’t going to be an option for the foreseeable future as all our extended family is in the UK. My searches kept coming back to this single handed catamaran that I hadn’t heard of before – A Paper Tiger. I went to the boat show in Auckland and found one there with the dinghy stands and got chatting to the bloke standing next to it – can’t remember who it was! A good look around it had me sold, and there was a local fleet at Torbay I wasn’t aware of! Then Ella’s little brother appeared on the scene, which set me back a few months, but the search continued. I found looking for a ‘new’ later model glass boat very difficult as they don’t really appear on the market very often. I settled for the fact I was going to have to buy an older boat and try and make it competitive. I found PT533 on Trade Me. It was yellow, with white/resin coated deck. It certainly wasn’t race ready and was quite original looking at 40 years old.. Most fittings were corroded and about to break, but the hulls were solid and the road trailer was very good. I did the deal and brought her home. It was October 2012. First on the list was a new rig, which Mike Hood kindly brought up the country when attending the Sir Peter Blake regatta in 2012. I scrounged a boom section at the same time and went to work. I ordered a halyard lock and new gooseneck from the guys in Australia. The old tillers were bent so I made some new carbon ones and I cleaned up and repaired the rudders. I now had a old looking boat with some shiny new bits on it, and very original looking rusty/tatty mainsail. I got in touch with Mark Orams and splashed it in at Torbay. I’ve sailed and raced for over 30 years, but had never really sailed cats before - so this was, and still is, a learning experience. I knew I wasn’t going to keep up with the fleet, and I spent the obligatory time going backwards out of tacks, but it was the first proper sailing in two and half years I’d had. It was great fun, though I was over a leg behind! (The sailing withdrawal symptoms were over). Mark was encouraging me along, but In April last year I took the boat apart for a complete rebuild. It weighed in at 70kg – 20kg overweight. I first turned to the trailer – The boat came with some dolly wheels for launching which located in the ends of rear beams. It’s a simple idea, but made the boat heavy to lift as the pivot point was too far aft. I stripped off the trailer hull supports and broke out the welder. I made a launching trolley for the boat which supported the boat on the front beam and located the back end onto one of the old trailer supports. Then I converted the trailer so that the trolley rolled up onto it with boat using some keel rollers. It took a few weeks, but I now have a combo trailer. We’ll see how it performs. Whilst I was testing the trolley, I accidently dropped the boat off it onto the trailer. I put a fist size hole in the port hull, and the list of fresh expletives in the Queens English had the neighbour’s curtains twitching. Still, better to find this out now and make the design changes to the trailer. The hulls came off the beams and all the bits were stored away. I sold the old mast for $25 as a flag pole and I weighed the first hull in at 28kg before any work was done. I wanted to try and avoid the hours of paint stripping, so dropped one hull off with a local soda blaster as an experiment. The 40 years of paint on the hulls was pretty thick, and intermixed with layers of resin. He did his best and it cleaned most of the softer paint off, but it couldn’t touch the harder stuff. He was in danger of blowing the timber apart so had to stop. Bugger, it was going to be a long stripping job. With the hull now back home, I made a cradle from a shipping pallet and the old deck came off. There was 2 layers of ply deck in the centre between the beams where the original had failed in the past – more weight. It was still a messy stripping job, just layers and layers of paint/resin, 6-7 different colours. It started out white... I turned my attention to the hole in the hull. The area was full of filler and the timber was delaminated, so it was obviously a good omen it broke when it did. I cut it all out (quite a chunk) and then cut a new piece of ply to fit. All glued in using epoxy and glass tape. Finally it was done, and I rolled it over to start on the new deck. I chose to use 4mm Gaboon marine ply for the replacement deck and bulkheads. Mainly

Page 24

because it was in keeping with the older boat, its cheap and I don’t really have the time to try and use the modern materials with 2 small kids. It needed to be a relatively simple process. I learnt a few things on the way and probably made a few mistakes, but the deck was cut and glued into place. It looked OK, though I’d never done this before. I reweighed the hull again with the new deck at 20kg. (without paint) Not a bad weight saving! Filling and fairing the hull took a few long evenings and weekends and I got it into primer. NOTE - I’m ‘ok’ with the final result but it’s not completely perfect – I discovered what looks flat in a single garage working under a single strip light isn’t necessarily so when out in the sunshine. I now turned my attention to the other hull and repeated the exercise without the soda blasting. The paint came off in bags-2-3mm thick in places. This hull was in much better condition and didn’t need repair. Off came the deck and I repeated the exercise of deck/bulkhead replacement – Its quicker when you have done it once before. Once both hulls were in primer, I had to choose a colour – Orange. I have the equipment for spraying paint, but my time windows for work were limited to an hour in an evening after the kids were asleep, so I decided to roller/brush it on. I initially wet sanded the primer with 320 grade paper and between top coats with 600 grade. The final finish isn’t completely blemish free, but it’s far better that what I started with. It’s a race boat, so it’s going to get scratched a bit anyhow. One thing that really annoyed me is a run of wet resin I didn’t find out about until after it dried – I was sealing up the timber around the chain plates and it ran down the back on one and onto the new hull paint overnight. It’s still there but I will remove it eventually. I found some new PT beams on Trade Me that had been pre cut to length. I got my friendly engineering shop to make up and install the dolphin striker and strap. On fitting I found that the new front beam was around 40mm longer than the old one. On measuring and re measuring many times to make sure I wasn’t missing something, and ensuring that the centre line of the hulls was actually parallel, I concluded that there must have been a significant ‘toe in’ previously at the bows. That can’t have been good for performance. Once the beams were fitted and bolted in place, I put the boat onto the new trolley. A new trampoline came from Brett Linton and was duly fitted over Christmas. At the beginning of January I rolled it out into the sunshine for the first time, placed it on the trailer and broke open a cold beer. It had been 8 months. I now fitted the majority of the systems to the boat whilst it was outside under a tarp. I moved the mainsheet block to the centre of the boat and fitted up the control traveller in a similar way. I also put the mast back up and checked out a 2nd hand mainsail I acquired – It looks better than the original sail....I stripped many layers of paint off the 2 original centreboards to find I had actually asymmetric boards, however they were identical, not opposites. Go figure that one! I planned back and refaired one to the correct profile and extended both boards slightly. I need to look at the lifting controls, but they will work for now. What does she weigh now? I don’t actually know at time of writing, though I will weigh it at some point. My guess is 50-55kg. It’s now mid January 2014 and the boat is not quite finished, but looks finished and is ready enough to go sailing. I still have a few jobs to do, things to change and a new mainsail to order. I also need to figure out what to name it? The original name on the PT register is something like Flokapuss??!! I’d be curious to know if anyone knows any history of the boat, she was built in Titirangi by accounts and appears to have spent some of her time on the East coast around Auckland. Hope to see you all on the water. Nick Oliver PT533 (Name to be decided)

It has been a very busy season thus far for the Napier fleet. The majority of us have been to all traveller series regattas (including the golfing trip to Muritai). It has been a very pleasing run of results for our guys also. Hayden achieved a great result at the Nationals coming 3rd and also won the recent North Island Champs in Turangi. Stuart won B Grade at the Nationals with Nathan coming second and along with the rest of our fleet they have been improving greatly during the season. We have had some great battles on the water this season and there is still a lot more to come with our club champs starting in a couple of weeks. Focus is already starting to shift to next seasons Napier Nationals over Jan 13th-17th. Planning is already underway to make this a great event and hoping it will produce a New Zealand Team to defend all the titles won in Wellington last year. We look forward to seeing you all there. Taranaki Numbers are dwindling a bit as the season draws to a close, with only 2 weekends left in our championship series before it’s all over for another year. We only managed to get 1 day of racing at our New Plymouth regatta this year as we had a stonker blow through on the Sunday. It was however well supported with just about every Napier boat turning up and a good showing from Wellington and Auckland – thanks to those that made the effort to travel. We had a band organised for the Saturday night and Wendy Syman took out first prize for being suitably “hatted”, with Baldrick and I not scoring as much support from the public gallery. Jamie and Pauline are spending more time at their floating “bach” these days, so we get to see them when the boating forecast for Auckland is looking dubious (don’t ruin a good story Jamie). Baldric has become a petrol-head and in recent times I think we have seen more of him cruising the main street of New Plymouth at Americarna than down at the yacht club. Also, rumour has it that small things amuse him these days… Dylan went off to uni in February so things have been a bit quieter than usual around the house. Our numbers have been propped up by a good showing from the local fire brigade, whenever they are off shift, with Jason and Sam turning up most weekends. I understand they have a 3rd fledgling sailor in training, ready to add to our ranks. Cheers Stu Taylor PT 2529 Sea Goon

Wanganui The Wanganui area has had a poor season for the most part with many sailing days cancelled due to high winds. There are six regular sailors with Paper Tigers although one owner does not turn up very often, an excuse about golf and other things we understand, is that right Grant. For those who don’t know the Wanganui Sailing club is blessed with a large storage shed which has room for lots of yachts, one area is set aside for paper tigers where about 8 can be stored on beach trolleys and about 8 others in racks. If a PT is not used that often it gets put up on the racks. Grants PT is in grave danger of receiving this indignity. We managed to get three Wanganui PTs to Turangi this year and at least one to most of the fresh water / grand prix series this season. It was noticed that the competition was stronger in the fresh water series this season compared to the last one so those who take the opportunity to attend these events will gain from the experience. Thanks to Stuart Taylor for organising this seasons fresh water and grand prix series. Events coming up in the next season at Wanganui are the Masters Games for the +40 sailors in early February and the Wanganui Regatta in March next year, the regatta is the designated Central Districts Regatta next season so they might be some New Plymouth PTs here. Dates of these events have not been decided as it depends on tide times. Jim Moore PT 2868 Hot Gossip Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. 11 PT’s, including 2 from Auckland, competed in the 109 boat fleet for the Wellington Centreboard Champs at Worser Bay BC over the 1st & 2nd of March. Great to see Gareth Moore and Rob Hielkema make the long trip south. Racing got underway in a southerly gusting to 30 kts, enough to make some stay on the beach. Jocko McLauchlan probably wishes he had, as his new mast was an early casualty, while Mike Hood & Gareth both spent time inspecting the bottom of their hulls, Hoody apparently deciding one look wasn’t enough! A win to Andy Brown , after which the conditions started easing. Staying upright this time, Hoody proved he knows the way around his home waters with a win in R2, before Rowdy Leatham triumphed in R3. Sunday saw a rising northerly. Hoody took two more wins, with the wind gusting to around 25kts by R6, which was won by Peter Robins. Hoody took out the title, Pete 2nd and Andy 3rd. Also good to see Scott Barker back on a PT again, giving Rob Connor’s “Top Cat” a work out. The Muritai YC Tiapo Shield Regatta on the 8th March saw 7 PTs competing over 3 races in a variable northerly. The racing was close throughout and honours were shared, with Peter Robins and Greg Shadbolt victorious in the morning races and Norm Codd winning the feature Tiapo Shield race. Peter took 1st place overall, from Robin Connor and Norm. April 5th & 6th and the Evans Bay Lidgard Sails Regatta saw 15 PTs line up, by far the biggest fleet amongst the classes represented. A light northerly died out during R1, but after an hour or so wait the fun began. The southerly settled in at around 10 – 15 knots for 3 races during the afternoon. Rowdy took command until Hoody sneaked in for a win in R4. It was good, close racing, with Brett Gawn, PT 2970 “Sundae” showing he is quickly getting to grips with two hulls, although he and Rick Martin were seen trying to get four hulls separated near the top mark at one stage! It should be noted that Scott Barker has been spending a lot of time with many of the local sailors going over sail and rig settings, and it is showing in a marked improvement across the fleet – thanks Scottie. On the water from 1020 until about 1630, so tummies were rumbling by the time we got in! Sunday was 15 – 18 knots and flat water - superb! 3 races and all agreed it was some of the best sailing we can remember, except maybe Remy Thomassen, who during R7 decided “Double Dutch” might be due for a new mainsheet or ratchet block after managing three capsizes on the wind! Lynley Manning and Jane Thomassen had a close battle for female bragging rights, Lynley getting there with some good pace in the last couple of races. Overall Rowdy prevailed, from Hoody 2nd, and Andy Brown 3rd. For full results see http://www.ebymbc.org.nz/racing_assets/13_14_results/LidgardLine.htm In January, Muritai club members sadly bid farewell to our pal and all round good guy, Phil Chisholm – PT 777 “Widget”, who passed away after a short illness, aged 50. Always an entrepreneur, in the 80’s he hired catamarans out from the Days Bay Boatshed, and gave many people their first taste of sailing. After a stellar local cricket career Chis was enjoying being back on the water. He loved getting out on “Widgey”, and especially the challenge of competing against his good mates, Stephan Fegert and Greg Shadbolt. The overflowing church and hall reflected the respect by which he was held in the local community.
