SHS Brings Literacy Initiative to Elementary

Schools

Stockbridge High School and the Literacy Focus Team are working

towards increasing student literacy not only for our own students, but for

the students of the Stockbridge community. Mrs. Rose’s drama classes

traveled to local elementary schools on September 8 as a part of

International Literacy Day 2015 to bring reading alive for young students

by enacting scenes from the Wizard of Oz. Our students did a great job!

Visual Arts Department

This past month in the art department, students have been working on a

wide variety of projects. The Comprehensive Art class has been exploring

different types of lines and their uses in artwork. Students experimented

with various types of designs using the Zentangle method to create

interesting drawings that illustrated a theme. Students did a great job with

this project and you can see them inside of the art display case all semester!

The Drawing and Painting class has been working on alternate methods of shading artwork by collaging various grey values found in newspapers. Stu-dents had to find the shades they needed in the newspaper to create a like-ness of the celebrity they were portraying. Many students found this method to be challenging at first, but allowed them to focus on new, creative ways of making art.

The Ceramics and Sculpture class has been focusing on how to create sculptures out of paper. Students created designs through paper quilling – a method of rolling and folding paper to create interesting lines when viewed from above. Students had various designs that they were working on and did an outstanding job filling their composition with beautiful designs – all out of paper!

ROTC – 13th

Annual Drill and Orienteering Camp

With two months of planning, the Stockbridge NJROTC hosted its 13th annual Drill and Orienteering Camp at Hard Labor Creek State Park from the 4th to the 6th of September (Labor Day Weekend). Following natural disaster at FDR five years ago, the event was relocated to Hard Labor Creek, still standing since the New Deal. This year, Chief Petty Officer Russell coordinated the operation with the cadet unit leadership to host approximately 260 cadets and parents for the training of ROTC competitive skills. With many choosing orienteering, maps were distributed and cadres were assigned to teach map reading skills, and self-reliance in the wilderness. The 210 unit Stockbridge NJROTC had 60 total Cadets present

for the entirety of the camp. In addition, a different set of cadres taught drill rather than orienteering. These cadets practiced stationary movements to reinforce the military image expected from these programs. Even with the inclement weather looming, fortune managed to hold back the threat, providing excellent weather the entire weekend.

The ROTC Booster Club parents under the leadership of the President, Ms. Aisha Knight, planned and prepared meals for the entire camp for the duration, and even ran a camp store for the basic necessities most teenagers demand; soft drinks and candy! All in all, we had 15 parents assist the unit in hosting this event under the guidance of Captain Malone, the Senior Naval Science Instructor.

The weekend flowed smoothly, with minimal hiccups despite the large

number of participants. After having a wonderful experience, and having left

no one behind, everyone found their way back to the buses to resume classes

on Tuesday. As a result of the success and learning experience that the camp

brought to the cadets, the instructors and unit staff are already planning for

the next year’s camp.

FCCLA – Lead2Feed

The Lead2Feed Student Leadership Program is the nation’s leading and fastest growing free service learning program, attracting more than a million students in 3,500 schools and clubs across all 50 states. Aligned to standards and 21st century skills, Lead2Feed is making a huge difference in participants’ lives and the programs they create.

At our school we created a food pantry to help families in need. We called our BIG GOAL project “Cookies for Cans”. We collected cans for three days and each person who donated received a fresh baked cookie. Below are students’ quotes on how our Lead 2 Feed project impacted them.

“Yesterday, this girl in my class told us how she wasn’t fed enough when she was younger. Because she told us her story we knew that there are people in this world who don’t always get enough food to eat. Now we can understand how some people feel and understand how lucky we are to not have to starve like some people do.”-China

“The cookies for cans showed how easily people can help out for a good cause. It made me happy to see how people brought in their cans to be helpful. I am happy that we could help out at least a little and it made me appreciate what I have and want to help out more.”-Lyric

“I’ve learned that kids aren’t focused on the right thing. They are focused on what they are getting instead of the giving. It made me feel awful because kids here are hungry. It disappoints me that our generation is like this.”-Christopher

“Our cookies for cans project was very emotional for me because a classmate gave her speech explaining how she was food insecure as a young child.”-Brandon

“Lead 2 Feed showed me how fortunate I really am, that was my “aha” moment. It makes me really sit down and think about life and how much I have and how much I could give.”-Makensie

“I’ve learned just how selfish individuals of this world have become. I traveled to classrooms around my school to tell students about the food pantry our Food Nutrition and Wellness class is opening for students who may need help with food. We’ve asked that students bring in canned goods etc. and as a “thank you” we give the students a cookie. Whenever I would tell the students this, the first question the students would ask was, “What kind of cookie is it?” I was appalled at the fact that these people were only concerned with what they were getting. I was upset that it seemed like no one could look past their own gain and want to realize that there are bigger problems and what they do could help someone out who really needs it. I want people to realize how big of a problem hunger is which is why I’m a part of this program. I’m thankful for what I have and that I have the opportunity to help individuals who are truly in need.”-Lela

“During the Lead 2 Feed project a lot of things really touched my heart. One of the biggest things was knowing some people go days or maybe even weeks without eating. Almost every day I hear at least one person around me say they’re starving or very hungry. But that’s nothing compared to kids around the world that haven’t had a meal in days.”-Mariah

“My best moment with this program was when Chef told us that people brought items without wanting a cookie. That means they really have a heart and they want to help people. They aren’t just doing it for the reward. It warms my heart.”-Naykessia

“What really touched my heart was when I went to speak to the classes about our program, was the selfishness of the kids. They were too busy worried about what they were getting in return to actually see the big picture. We still got a great response and I’m proud of our achievements.”-Tiara

“Since I have been in this class, first Lead 2 Feed has been an inspiring program. It encourages me to want to help others in need. It is not easy to sit by and watch people suffer from food insecurities.”-Mark

“This experience has been, well different. It was something I never expected I would do. I honestly had a good time though. I do like helping people and motivation is always nice. This has really been an eye opening experience for me and I really appreciate Chef Jackson for showing me.”-Kam’Ron

“At the beginning of this project I thought it would just be another project I had to do to finish senior year. It turned out to be so much more. The kids at my school don’t know much about the hunger or food insecurity around them. I remember when I was about six or seven and me and my family had to scrape together our change to get us a meal/ back then my mom made to much to have federal help but too little to help us sometimes. This project makes me realize there are people out there like I used to be and I need to help. I am very grateful from where I came from. I want to help everyone I can and makes sure they know it can’t rain forever.”-Alexis

“In Lead 2 Feed I found out that people really are struggling in the world and some people are too scared to tell anybody that they aren’t eating. But in lead 2 feed we are helping people that are less fortunate and provide them with things to eat. If everybody participates and help we could possibly end the

“Cookies for cans showed me that I am very fortunate. A lot of the kids weren’t really focusing on the right thing they were worried about the cookies and not feeding people who were starving. Doing this made me want to help others. I really hope I can help someone out with my donation.”-Naylin

After finishing this project a lot of students realized how good it feels to help someone out by just donating something simple. We challenge everyone to help their community “END HUNGER- one can at a time”
