    Overview

New England was built in timber. The richhistory is still alive today in the regionalbuilding traditions that have evolved sincethe birth o the nation. Timber, as a organicrenewable material, is now being deployedto address issues o sustainability in con-temporary construction. Engineered lumbertechnologies are pushing the boundaries owood construction rom rural arm houses tocomplex urban structures and is driving a re-naissance o timber construction worldwide.

Today, our urban climate and requirementsor building perormance are changing andconstruction technologies and buildingcodes are racing to keep up. The practiceo midrise urban timber construction hasbeen successully implemented in manyEuropean countries or more than ten years, and soon the US building code will beamended to allow or midrise timber con-struction in urban areas.

This competition asks you to draw rom NewEngland building and crat traditions to pushbeyond the conventional use o engineeredlumber and heavy timber technologies. Usethis opportunity to develop research and ex-plore the possibilities o engineered lumberand heavy timber reed rom the limitationsinherent within the planning and construc-tion o a traditional building project.

    Challenge

Propose a site specifc installation innovat-ing within New England building and crattraditions, using engineered lumber orheavy timber, to be realized at BSA SPACE(Atlantic Whar, Boston, Massachusetts)as part o the exhibition URBAN TIMBERopening February 2014.

Abstract and develop a partial constructionaddressing at ull scale, specifc issues omateriality, structure, connection and clad-

ding. Installations must be experimental innature and push beyond the boundaries oconventional timber construction. Entrantsmust choose and respond to one o threesites documented or intervention. (visitwww.timbernewengland/downloads/)

3 fnalists will each receive a $7,500 grantto realize their design. Each fnalist / teamwill work closely with a proessional archi-tectural frm, structural engineer, and mate-rial supplier to acilitate the development

    and abrication o installations.

    Eligibility
