French forces operating out of Fort Duquesne precipitated the war by first forcing the surrender of a force of Virginia militia under the command of George Washington in 1754, then decimating a combined-British-American force under Edward Braddock in the following year. Initially, French forces succeeded in driving in the colonial frontier and defending their advanced positions against several badly organized British-American offensives, the most noteworthy being James Abercromby’s disastrous assault on Ticonderoga in 1758. Under the leadership of Prime Minister William Pitt, the British organized and successfully executed a three pronged offensive that finally culminated with James Wolfe’s victory over the Marquis de Montcalm at Quebec in 1759. TIMELINE

The roots of the Seven Year’s War in North America rest in the conflicting land claims of France and Britain in the Ohio Valley. French forces operating out of Fort Duquesne precipitated the war by first forcing the surrender of a force of Virginia militia under the command of George Washington in 1754, then decimating a combined-British-American force under Edward Braddock in the following year.

Initially, French forces succeeded in driving in the colonial frontier and defendingtheir advanced positions against several badly organized British-American offensives, the most noteworthy being James Abercromby’s disastrous assault on Ticonderoga in 1758.
