Sophora Japonica called Chinese Scholar tree, or

Japanese Pagoda Tree.

not Japan. But it’s introduced and widely

acknowledged in Japan. It reaches 40’ to 60’ tall, is a

common urban street tree with its outstanding

ornamental features and urban hardy in many cities

The harvest of Sophora Japonica buds and flowers

Presentation in 2010

1. The lowest temperature in the 50 years at Last

winter and this spring, hit Shandong, Henan,

Hebei, Shanxi provinces. The buds of Sophora

Japonica were seriously affected, it came 20

days later than before, and is reduced by 50-

60%. The price is raised to be RMB24-26, which

increased by 230% before the new buds came

out. Most of the traditional area, there’s no bud

to pick up. And others just got a few.

2. The pests seriously damaged the buds in Anhui,

Henan, Shandong provinces, it’s another reason

that causes some Sophora Japonica without bud,

other areas get it few. This affects the output,

too.

3. Some Chinese medicinal materials trading

companies and some manufacturers have

Sophora japonica buds or flowers stock,

because the abundant harvest in 2009. They got

know the bud production of this year was

seriously reduced, they hold the materials. But

the stock is not much now.

4. Cost of labor: The Sophora japonica is a kind of

big tree. It’s not easy to pick the bud or flower.

In the past years, the labor cost was not much,

farmer is not so active to take them, even the

cost of labor is growing up now.

5. Some manufacturers have imported the buds

from Vietnam through the trading companies.

But if the price goes up in China, the trading

companies will raise the price by this chance, In

the recent years, the imported bud’s price is

almost same as in china.

The End

Due to the reasons above, the Sophora Japonica

market is in the uncertain period before the

manufacturers put into production. We couldn’t

get the conclusion about the future market of

Rutin and Quercetin.

Some companies have gone to Vietnam for it. The

buds in Vietnam were coming out by June,

slightly affected by the cold weather. But the high

cost of freight and almost same price as in china,

many companies take the attitude to watch the

domestic raw material markets and the

requirements from rutin and quercetin market.
