Timing and Lifestyle
LIFESTYLE: John has built a good career and is more than able to provide for his family. The Jollys don't have money issues, but they still live a down-to-earth life and want the kids to grow up living a good but modest life.
HOME: The Jollys live in a 5 bedroom home in the suburbs of Los Angeles. There are two master bedrooms (one for the parents and one for the grandparents). The grandparents' master bedroom is located on the first floor of the home just off of the living room and kitchen area. Alan and Tom share a room that has a bunk bed. Alan sleeps on the top bunk and Tom on the bottom bunk. Anne has her own room. The children share a bathroom.
Upstairs is a guest bedroom. On the main level of their home is an open layout with all of the rooms flowing into each other. There is a kitchen, dining room, a living room (also the family room, but can be referred to as the living room in all stories), an office located off of the open family area, a small bathroom, and a laundry room off of the kitchen that leads into the garage.
In their back yard there is a swimming pool, garden, patio with a table and chairs, a clubhouse for the kids, and a small yard for other activities. They have a porch on the front of their house and a small yard in the front. Please refer to the PDF in the Writer Resources folder for the layout of the Jolly home. If you are wanting to write in other details about the house, inside or outside, but the details are not given, please consult
VISITORS: The Jollys have a guest room. While there is only one guest room, sometimes Grandpa Henry and Grandma Helen are away, so additional guests that cannot fit into the sole guest room will sometimes stay in their room. The boys are also more than thrilled to sleep in a tent or the clubhouse in the backyard if any guests need their room. Anne is also more than happy to give up her room and have a slumber party with anyone that will allow. Visitors are more than welcome!
Backstory
JOHN & WENDY: College sweethearts. They met while in university in Chicago. Wendy is originally from Boston, where her parents and other family still reside. After high school, she moved to Chicago to study fashion design at the same university where John was attending. They met when Wendy was 20 and a sophomore in college. John was 22 and was a senior in college. After John graduated with his BA in marketing, he went on to get his MBA from the same university so that he could be near to Wendy while she was finishing her BA.
After they were both finished, they got married in Chicago. John was 24 and Wendy was 22. After getting married, they decided to stay in Chicago because John was able to get a good job in marketing. Wendy missed her family in Boston, but knew that Chicago was the right place for them to be. They chose to wait a few years before having children so that they could both focus on their careers and do some traveling without kids. Wendy dabbled a bit in fashion design, but her career never really took off.
Being in LA is something that Wendy is excited about because of all the fashion related things in the area. It was John's job that took off and was successful. Moving to LA was a huge promotion for him as he was able to get a VP position in marketing at a new company. At the ages of 28 and 26, they decided that they would try to start having children. One year later the twins were born when John was 29 and Wendy was 27. The rest is history! --- When John and Wendy got married, bird seed was thrown as they excited the church. They went on a five day Caribbean cruise for their honeymoon.
GRANDPA HENRY & GRANDMA HELEN: Grandpa Henry and Grandma Helen are John's parents. They first visited the family after they moved and during the holidays. Shortly after their visit, the grandparents decided that they couldn't be away from the family, so they decided to move to LA to be with the family. The children are always excited that their grandparents decided to move to be with them. There has been some confusion as to where the grandparents are. They do currently live with the family and is good to include them on things! It is okay to make mention of how excited the family is that they now live with the rest of the family. Henry and Helen had also planned on only having one child. Henry was away a lot on deployments in their earlier years of marriage. John was a bit of a surprise when he came along! After moving around quite a bit as family, Helen and Henry settled down in the Chicago area with Henry working at Naval Station Great Lakes in the Chicago area.
CONSISTENCY NOTE: In narration, please refer to the grandparents as Grandpa Henry and Grandma Helen. When being talked to by the children, refer to them as Grandpa and Grandma. When addressed by John, he calls them Mom and Dad. When addressed by Wendy, she usually refers to them as Henry and Helen to alleviate any confusion for readers. When the kids are present, both John and Wendy refer to the grandparents as Grandpa and Grandma in conversation.
Please be cautious about building in backstory and history of the family. It is best in the stories to live in today to prevent consistency issues.
Vehicles, To & From School
VehiclesVEHICLES: The family drives a van (6 cylinder, automatic), which Wendy primarily drives and is the main vehicle for the family. John has a two-seater convertible (4 cylinder, manual) that he uses for commuting and provides opportunities for fun dates with both Wendy and the kids. The grandparents have an old-fashioned station wagon (6 cylinder, automatic).
To & From
School
THE JOLLY KIDS & SCHOOL: Anne: she attends a half-day kindergarten in the mornings at the same elementary / primary school as her brothers. We want Anne to be in a half-day program because this will allow for some fun mother-daughter things or other Anne adventures when her brothers are still in school. Good news on this is that after I have done further research is that California is one of the states where they have the least amount of full-day kindergartens at their elementary schools. Whether a 5 year-old goes to half-day or full-day is up to the parents. In this case, John and Wendy have decided that they want Anne to only go half-days in the mornings.
Getting to school: each morning Wendy drives all three of the Jolly children to their school. The grandparents could also take the children to school, but good to mention why they are doing it. Most important is that they don’t take the bus in the mornings. If they do, it is good to make mention of why they do. The reasoning for not taking the bus in the mornings is because Wendy is protective of Anne and would prefer that she not take the bus with everyone else.
Getting home from school: Wendy picks Anne up after her half-day kindergarten in the morning and go home where they eat lunch together or go out together. Grandparents are also welcome to pick her up, but again, good to make mention of why. The twins take the bus home from school. If Wendy or the grandparents pick of the twins, please give the reasoning in the story. Such as, Alan is going to piano class right after school or they are doing something else that would not take them home first. If the twins are separated, such as, only one of them has piano class, either they both go together or give reason why one is picked up and the other is taking the bus home.
Distance of the school from the home: Walking distance would be about 30 minutes or so. The boys could potentially walk home in the afternoon sometimes, but this isn't the norm. Driving to the school would probably be about 5 minutes by car, 10 minutes or so by school bus.
