Happy anniversary everyone! It’s hard to believe that 10 years have already come and gone since my arrival. Can you believe I was only 13 when you hired me as Music Director? As I fondly look back on my tenure, I am struck by the affection of so many who embraced my wife Jill and me as we joined this amazing community. During this time I have been supremely blessed to work for a board that has demonstrated time and again their tireless commitment and dedication to Orchestra Iowa, its musicians and staff. In a time where symphony orchestras are fading away, I have been singularly fortunate to be alongside a gifted team who continues to help me articulate the crucial role symphony orchestras have to play in the betterment of one’s community and quality of life.

Like all families, we’ve faced many ups and downs together – floods, economic downturns, cutbacks and staff shortages. Through it all we’ve persevered and achieved staggering accomplishments – Paramount restoration, statewide concert expansion, a robust chamber series, more diverse programming, novel artistic partnerships, new business models, financial stability and a professional recording – just to name a few. Artistically, I look back with great satisfaction to performances of the Verdi Requiem and the Bach St. John Passion. Our performance of Mahler’s 2nd Symphony will go down as one of the most significant musical moments of my life, as this orchestra continues to admirably reach for new artistic heights. Indeed most orchestras would be lucky to have achieved even half as much as what we’ve accomplished together in these past few years.

But there are miles to go before we can rest. Continuing our reach throughout the state with Orchestra Iowa On the Road, allows us greater opportunity to partner with a variety of organizations helping us spread our love of this great art form to ever more audiences. Most importantly, our future comes down to our ability to creatively attract superior artistic talent for the benefit of our community. Much has been said and written about Iowa’s “brain drain,” and Orchestra Iowa is no exception when it comes to facing these challenges. As we approach the 100th anniversary of our symphony orchestra in 2021, I look forward to building a sizeable endowment with you that will ensure that we continue to build on the impressive gains achieved so far. Thank you for being such great friends to the symphony, and to Jill and me personally, for we couldn’t be more fortunate to have made our way to this part of the country. Here’s to another fantastic 10 years together.

Meanwhile, nobody represents the French style more than Maurice Ravel in his Piano Concerto in G Major, which flirts with influences of American Jazz and the music of George Gershwin.

Ballet Quad Cities and Orchestra Iowa complete the grand triptych of Stravinsky’s greatest ballets in a nationally acclaimed project that began two seasons ago with an original production of the Rite of Spring. Petrushka is the story of a puppet come to life, not unlike Pinocchio, who must confront unexpected human emotions of love and jealousy. The Firebird is an ancient Russian fable where the magic of the firebird helps Prince Ivan break the spell of the evil Kashchei and win the heart of his beloved. Nowhere in the Midwest have these three important ballets been performed in such close proximity, making this rare achievement unique to our area.

Orchestra Iowa is proud to continue our mission of serving our great state in this partnership with the combined choruses of Simpson College (College Chamber Singers and Simpson College Choir) and the Des Moines Vocal Arts Ensemble. Written during the same time as his ninth symphony, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis is widely considered to be one of his supreme achievements and one of the greatest monuments in the symphonic/choral literature. MEMBERSHIP & PAYMENT INFORMATIONPassport to the Arts is a monthly-based membership program providing guaranteed seating at Orchestra Iowa main stage performances. Payment must be made by ACH from a valid checking account. Initial enrollment period begins April 2015 with no payments taking place until July. Passport Members enrolling after July 2015 will be charged upon enrollment.

Passport payments occur monthly. An enrollment charge equal to one month’s membership will be assessed to all new Passport members. Every month thereafter, members will be charged their regular monthly membership price. A minimum 12 month commitment is required with enrollment. Membership is auto-renewing and following the initial 12 month enrollment period may be discontinued with 30 days written notice. Orchestra Iowa reserves the future right to adjust the monthly price per zone. 90 days notice will be given for any such adjustments.

Tickets will be sent monthly depending on performance activity. Passport members may exchange their seats for another performance in the series that postdates the original concert free of charge. Members requiring any assistance may contact the Orchestra Iowa Ticket Office at 319.366.8203.

Exchanges are available to subscribers only, are subject to availability and must be completed by 5:00 PM on the business day prior to the specified concert. Refunds cannot be processed once seats are assigned and there are no refunds for inclement weather. Students and youth qualify for half-price subscriptions and single tickets with valid school ID, which must be presented at time of purchase. Discover the meaning behind the music with Insight, an informative, informal discussion presented by Maestro Hankewich and special guests prior to each Masterworks performance, excluding ballet and opera performances. Orchestra Iowa offers music programs for children (and adults) of all ages!

EARLY CHILDHOOD programsMusic Together® is a program designed to help parents nurture their preschool child’s musical growth. It provides developmentally appropriate music and movement instruction to infant, toddler and preschool children and their parents or caregivers. The Music Together® approach develops every child’s birthright of basic music competence through the actual music experience.

PIED piperJoin Orchestra Iowa’s talented chamber ensembles as they introduce preschool-aged children to the instruments of the orchestra! Focused on fun and learning, Pied Piper Concerts offer children the opportunity to enjoy an up-close and personal chamber concert absolutely FREE!

CHAMBER musicThe Orchestra Iowa School’s chamber music offerings give students the opportunity to perform repertoire of various styles while focusing on technical skills, listening, and ensemble playing. Designed to teach the fundamentals of chamber music performance, coachings focus on rhythmic accuracy, listening, dynamics, and the interaction of musicians in the ensemble.

MUSIC lessonsWhether beginning study, progressing in skills, preparing for school auditions, or playing for the simple enjoyment of making music, people of all ages can enjoy the benefits of music lessons at

the Orchestra Iowa School. Students as young as three may take violin, viola, flute, harp, or piano through the Suzuki (mother-tongue) Method, where they learn their instrument the same way they would learn a language. Other instruments and voice lessons are offered for older students.

Research has shown that music has a profound effect on the body and psyche. Music Therapy is an established profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals of all ages. Music therapists find benefits in using music to help children with special needs including attention deficit disorder, autism, long-term illnesses, and developmental disabilities. Music therapy sessions are offered to people of all ages and abilities.

YOUTH chorusesDISCOVERY chorusStudents in fourth, fifth and sixth grade are invited to audition for Discovery Chorus, a long-standing Orchestra Iowa School program designed to help young singers become acquainted with quality choral music and build good vocal technique. Approximately 100 students are selected annually by audition and have the opportunity to perform with Orchestra Iowa.

ODYSSEY chorusChildren in second and third grade are invited to participate in Odyssey Chorus, a preparatory choir designed to instill good vocal habits, beginning music reading and appropriate choir behavior. A variety of quality and fun literature is selected to build vocal skills and proficiency in unison and part-reading.

Children in kindergarten and first grade are invited to participate in Harmony Chorus, an exploratory choir designed to engage early childhood students in the joy of making music. Students work on the basics of pitch, tone matching and breath control as they develop focus and learn the importance of working within a group. Fun, age appropriate literature is selected to build vocal skills and proficiency in unison singing and simple rounds.
