From fairway to sports field to park, a perfect healthy lawn

is essential and it will only grow on soil that is properly

cared for. So, it’s important to keep your lawn regularly

aerated, particularly during periods of stress because this

ensures that the soil gets enough oxygen, prevents thatch-

ing and encourages root growth. There are two main ways

to aerate your lawn:

Core Aeration

Which is the process of removing small soil plugs or cores

from your lawn to fight soil compaction and limit the build-

up of excess thatch.

Solid Tine Aeration

Creates a hole but does not remove a core. It provides

enhanced gas movement between the root zone and the

atmosphere. This method causes limited surface disrup-

tion to your lawn, so it’s ideal in high traffic situations.

Aercore Tine OptionsJohn Deere offers what golf course superintendents need

HD:The same high quality body but without the high specifi-cation hardened tip. Expect around half the life of the HDT tine*. Again tine length remains consistent.

Conventional:No hardened tip. Tine length wears down with use, so holes between first to last green are not consistent. Tines may need to be changed after as few as 4 greens*.

* Comments about the life expectancy of tines are for guidance only. Variables such as soil conditions and operator behaviour will influence actual life expectancy. The opinion as to when a tine is “worn” and in need of replacement is likely to differ between individuals.

HDT:The highest quality of tine in the range. A hardened tip is joined to a high quality body. These tines are exception-ally long lasting – they should be good for 19 greens*. Furthermore, the tine will retain its length during its working life, so the holes on the last green you do will be comparable with the first green.

Why are there so many different tines?

We offer many different tines to give our customers as

many aeration options as possible. Everyone’s soil situa-

tion is unique and our wide range enables you to choose

the tine that is best suited to your needs and your lawn.

What do I do if my tines are plugging?

The fact is that hollow tines are more likely to plug than

side eject tines – especially in heavier soil conditions with

longer and larger internal diameter tines. We recommend

switching to side eject tines and allowing the soil to dry

out a bit more.

Longer tines used with some equipment reach deeper. If

the tines are pulling the heavier soil below the previous

aeration depth, using a larger side eject coring tine can

minimise plugging. Small rocks in sand can cause both

hollow and side eject tines to plug. If possible, try using a

larger internal diameter tine.

What do I do if my tines seem to be breaking

prematurely?

Be sure that the tine you have selected is the right struc-

ture for the area. Tines designed for greens and tees are

not necessarily designed to withstand impact against

hidden objects such as stones and tree roots, for example.

Wear around the side eject window will eventually

weaken the tines, so they should be replaced before they

reach this stage.

What do I do if the cores are being left in the

turf?

Soil with higher moisture content can cause a “hydraulic

lock” on the core and resist removal. Wait until the mois-

ture level has decreased or hold off on irrigation.
