Abstracts of Presentations Meeting Management - Wednesday, June 27, 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. The presentation will focus on preparation for and conduct of meetings for three types of meetings: small group, large group and the byproduct of the Internet age, the teleconference. The session will touch on agenda preparation, basic parliamentary procedure and an introduction to teleconferencing, using the Free Conference site (www.freeconference.com) as an illustration The Computer as a Mass Communication Medium - Friday, June 29, 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. This presentation will focus on the use of email and the World Wide Web, two of the fastest and most efficient ways of reaching large audiences through the Internet. The discussion on email will cover the power as well as the hazards of using email and ways to avoid or overcome email-related problems such as breach of security and invasion of privacy. Two different ways of using email for mass communication will be explained, namely the “shotgun” and the listserv methods. Different ways of and reasons for customizing email lists will be described and tried, using as illustrations the existing SUACONA email lists. The discussion on the World Wide Web will focus on three different options to choose from when deciding to set up a website for one’s organization. Advantages and disadvantages of each option will be offered. Hands-on work will ex-plore the functionality of the template website, using as a medium the SUACONA website.

Abstract of Presentation

Budgeting should always be related to the over-all planning process of the organization. Simply allocating money is not enough. Us-ing it strategically is what the budgeting process ideally should be about. Directors/Trustees, often through a committee should be involved in both the budgeting and general planning process. Because BOD/BOT must set long range goals for the organization, decide on program priorities, and ultimately assume fiscal responsibility, it is important that they involve themselves in the forecasting stages and later when the budgeting is monitored. The key steps in the Proposal Budgeting Process includes knowing your projects; obtain cost and income estimates for each compo-nent; research the guidelines of the potential funder and the prepare budget using budget worksheets; and have an independent review of your budget. The budget is the central nervous system of a proposal. It drives the project activities and adds greatly to the proposal reviewer’s understanding of the project. What you will learn:

• Understand the Multiple Roles of the proposal Budget

• How to create Each Component of the Budget

• How to Determine the Full Costs of your project

• How to use Budgeting Tools and Formats to meet Funder Requirements

• How to prepare an Actual Proposal Budget for Project Support

Abstract of Presentation Dr. Stranahan will discuss how the United Board operates and provide examples of projects at Silliman that have been funded by the United Board. The United Board works to support a Christian presence in colleges and universities in Asia. The work of the United Board centers on the Christian faith, higher education, and Asia. In Asian countries with Christian colleges and universi-ties, the United Board cooperates with those institutions to strengthen their Christian identity. In countries where Chris-tian colleges and universities do not presently exist, the United Board emphasizes projects and programs that reflect its commitment to Christian service. The United Board operates as both a grant-making and a programmatic organization with a focus on broad, comprehen-sive programs to respond to the challenges and diversity of Asia. The United Board works cooperatively with other or-ganizations that share its goals. The United Board funds its programs by seeking contributions from individuals, founda-tions, alumni of our programs and United Board-related institutions, and through income from our endowment.

Silliman University

Song

Where the white sands and the coral Kiss the dark blue southern sea. And the palm trees tall and stately Wave their branches in the breeze.

Stands a college we all honor, In our hearts without a peer. Silliman our Alma Mater Ever lovely, ever dear.

CHORUS

Loyal will we be to Silliman, Here's a cheer, boys, three times three:

Silliman our Alma Mater. Silliman beside the sea.

Happy days of school and college Gliding swiftly like a dream,

When the things of life and beauty Are more nearly what they seem, Winning vict'ries in the classroom, On the court, the track, the field, Still we work for dear old Silliman,

Her honor bright to shield.

When we leave the halls of Silliman, Roam the world o'er near and far, Still the faith and truth she gave us

Will remain our guiding star; Or in high place or in lowly, Fortune sends us joy or pain,

To our love for dear old Silliman, Loyal shall we'er remain.
