A young man called his mother andannounced excitedly that he had just
met the woman of his dreams. Nowwhat should he do?His mother had an idea: "Why don'tyou send her flowers, and on the cardinvite her to your apartment for ahome- cooked meal?"He thought this was a great strategy, and arranged a date for a week later. His mother called the day after thebig date to see how things had gone."The evening was a disaster," hemoaned."Why, didn't she come over?" askedhis mother.
"Oh, she came over alright, but sherefused to cook...."
In a hat shop a saleslady gushed:"That's the hat for you! It makes youlook ten years younger.""Then I don't want it," retorted thecustomer. "I certainly can't afford toput on ten years every time I take offmy hat!"
Little Johnny attended a horse auc-tion with his father, watching as hisfather moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down thehorse's legs, rump, and chest. After a few minutes, Johnny asked,"Dad, why are you doing that?"His father replied, "Because when I'mbuying horses, I have to make surethat they are healthy and in goodshape before I buy."Looking worried, Johnny said, "Dad,I think the milkman wants to buyMom!"
At school they were teaching howGod created everything, includinghuman beings. Little Johnny seemedespecially interested when they toldhim how Eve was created out of oneof Adam's ribs.Later in the week his mother noticedhim lying down as though he were ill,and said, "Johnny what is the mat-ter?"Little Johnny responded, "I have apain in my side. I think I'm going tohave a wife."
A little boy opened the big and oldfamily Bible with fascination, look-ing at the old pages as he turnedthem. Then something fell out, andhe picked it up and looked at it close-ly. It was an old leaf from a tree thathad been pressed in between the pag-es."Mammy, look what I found," theboy called out."What have you got there, dear?" hismother asked. With astonishment in the his voice,he answered, "It's Adam's Suit!"

Ireland’s very first illustrated diction-ary of baby sign language
Based on a concept that originated inthe US in 1986 with Dr Joseph Gar-cia, baby sign language has becomean international phenomenon allow-ing parents to communicate at awhole new level with their infantsbefore they have learned to talk. Al-ready extremely popular in the U.S.and across Europe, baby sign lan-guage is beginning to take off in Ire-land. At the forefront of this isSuperHands, who have just publishedIreland’s first illustrated baby signdictionary. This bright and colourful board bookintroduces parents and their littleones to the first forty signs they willneed to communicate with each oth-er. From food and drink to fun toyand animal signs, this book will getthe mums and dads of Ireland com-municating with their infants beforethey can even talk!Using simple gestures, babies andtheir parents embark on an entirelynew journey of interaction with eachother and more importantly, have funtogether. Thanks to SuperHands’baby sign language dictionary, par-ents and babies can learn to sign witheach other from the comfort of theirown homes while using ISL, IrishSign Language, the language of ourlocal deaf community.Baby sign language can reduce ba-by's frustration, enhance confidence, increase parent-child bond, acceleratespeech and reduce temper tantrums.Above all, however, it’s about spend-
ing enjoyable, quality time with yourbaby.Having begun in the West of Irelandin 2009, hundreds of parents and ba-bies have taken part in SuperHandsclasses and learned this new methodof communicating with their babies.Miriam Devitt, founder of Super-Hands, says the new book is a wel-come addition to her company. “Thisis a very exciting time for infantcommunication in Ireland. The feed-back from my classes in Clare andLimerick has been so great that I waskeen to expand as quickly as possi-ble. Now parents all over the countrycan experience the joys of signingwith their babies.”Gemma, mum to Hazel, 14 months, has really enjoyed learning sign withSuperHands: ”Hazel is now able tosign milk, drink, eat, apple, tired, tree, bath and nappy. Sign languagehas made communicating with her somuch easier. She is able to tell meexactly what she needs which leadsto less frustration for her and for me.Brilliant!”For more information seewww.superhands.ie or call Miriamon 086 822 3165.

It is that time of the year againwhen it is the wonder of seeing theexcitement and joy on the face of achild as he opens his Christmaspresents that enthralls us. There ishowever, one gift, we hope will notbe under the Christmas Tree thisyear, and that is a puppy or kitten.
The Tipperary Friends of Animalswant to remind everyone that pup-pies and kittens are a lifetime com-mitment. They are living creatureswho feel joy and sorrow in exactlythe same way that people do andwhen they are abandoned after afew months, it is a heartbreakingexperience to the animals whodon’t understand what has hap-pened.
Anyone considering getting a pet, should first look into the cost ofkeeping a pet, especially in today’sfinancial climate. A decent petfood can be expensive and vaccina-tions and vets bills would certainlyput a dent in anyone’s pocket. Then there is the kennelling fees forwhen the holiday time is around.Having said all that, pets are won-derful to have around a home andyou can be assured of no greaterfriend, but just like a friend, a com-mitment has to be made to keepthem for life.
Anyone wanting a dog or a cat cancall us at 086-8163707 and after theChristmas frenzy had died down, the Tipperary Friends of Animalswill be delighted to enrich yourhome with another family member!

“I bargained with Life for a penny,And Life would pay no more,However I begged at eveningWhen I counted my scanty store.“For Life is a just employer,He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,Why, you must bear the task.“I worked for a menial’s hire,Only to learn, dismayed,That any wage I had asked of Life,Life would have willingly paid.”

Merry ChristmasTo All Our Customers
1. Keep receipts / proof of purchaseAlways ask for and keep your receipts. If an item is faulty it is much easier toget redress if you can produce proof ofpurchase.
2. The 3 Rs of your consumer rightsUnder the Sale of Goods Act you areentitled to a repair, replacement or re-fund if an item is faulty, not fit for itspurpose or not as described. If this hap-pens, it is the responsibility of the sellerto put things right.
Remember you will need proof of pur-chase so keep your receipts. If you re-main unsatisfied with how a shop ishandling your problem, you may wishto resort to the Small Claims Court forresolution of disputes covering itemsup to a value of €2,000.
You are not entitled to a refund if yousimply change your mind. However, many shops operate a goodwill policyof accepting unused returns, with re-ceipts, within a stated time period.
3. Gift receiptsIf the item is a gift then ask for a GiftReceipt. Some shops provide these. They do not state the price of the itembut allow the consumer to pass onproof of purchase with the gift.
4. Gift voucher expiry datesGift vouchers / cards are a popular giftparticularly around Christmas time.Check if there is an expiry date and en-sure the person receiving it will be ableto use it in the required time. Remem-ber shops do not have to replace lostvouchers.
5. Online shopping - know yourrightsRemember that in addition to enjoyingthe same rights as shopping on the highstreet when you buy online, you arealso entitled, in most cases, to return anunwanted item within seven days ofreceipt for a no-quibble refund.
Just beware that postage and packingcharges are not usually refundable onsuch unwanted items and always checkthat delivery policies meet your needs.
Security of your personal financial in-formation is a prime issue when shop-ping online, so always look for thepadlock symbol on the bottom of thewebsite and check the seller is reputa-ble.
6. Consumer rights lie with the buyerof the goodsConsumer rights in relation to a prod-uct or service lie with the person whoactually made the purchase. So if youbuy a gift for someone and it turns outto be faulty, you may have to seek re-dress on that person's behalf.
7. Make sure the goods work as soonas you get homeIf the goods are faulty it is important toact quickly, so always check that prod-ucts are working as soon as you getthem home. This may also spare youany trauma facing the Customer Serv-ice desk with a faulty item during themania of post-Christmas sales! Alsodon't leave it until Christmas morningto discover you need batteries or addi-tional accessories.
8. Safety firstLook out for the CE marking whenbuying toys and electrical items. Themark shows that the item conforms toessential EU health and safety require-ments. Always follow safety instruc-tions and select age-appropriatechildren's toys.
9. Watch out for scamsIf you're offered toys or other gifts at a'knock-down price', check if the itemsare authentic. You have no comeback if they arecounterfeit, they may not conform toimportant safety standards and you arepromoting an illegal practice. If an of-fer looks too good to be true, it proba-bly is.
10. Credit cardsDon't get snowed under by debt thisChristmas. Remember the cost of creditif shopping on plastic and try to spendwithin the limits of what you can affordto repay.Check payment deadlines for "InterestFree, Buy now, Pay Later" offers andmake sure you plan to pay within theallotted time, or else interest penaltiesmay start to pile up!
11. Watch out for added extrasAlways check what is and is not in-cluded in the basic price of an item. Ifexpensive accessories are required, fac-tor this into your purchase decision.Think carefully about your genuine re-quirements before agreeing to purchaseextras such as extended warranties anddon't feel pressurised by hard-sell tac-tics. Remember that your consumerrights cannot be denied once you havea genuine consumer complaint no mat-ter what type of warranty you have.
12. Read the small printKnow what you are signing up to, par-ticularly in the case of contracts formembership or subscription-basedservices.
Be aware that you are entering into alegal contract that may commit you toremaining a member for a minimumamount of time, for example one year,or may require you to observe mini-mum notice periods when you wish toterminate that contract.

Christmas can be a stressful time andyou’ll probably be spending moretime in the shops than you usuallywould. With the crowds, lists andpressure to get everything organisedin time, you need to be extra carefulusing your credit and debit cards atthe till.
If you use your card and the trans-action does not go through success-fully the first time, make sure theshop assistant voids the transactionand gives you a void receipt. Do notput in your PIN again if the firsttransaction has not been cancelled asyou could be charged twice for thesame transaction.
If you find out later that the trans-action has gone through twice, youshould return to the retailer and askthem to reverse it. If the issue is notresolved to your satisfaction, youshould ask your bank to carry out achargeback on the transaction.
If you are using an ATM machineduring Christmas, be alert and put
your personal safety first. If you spotanything unusual about the cash ma-chine, or if there are signs of tamper-ing, do not use it. You should reportyour suspicions to the bank con-cerned immediately.
Stand close to the ATM or cardterminal and always shield the key-pad with your free hand and yourbody to avoid anyone seeing you en-ter your PIN.
If the cash machine does not returnyour card or does not give you thecorrect amount of money, report itimmediately to your own card com-pany or bank rather than the bank op-erating the ATM machine. You havea relationship with your own bank soask them to sort it out for you.
If you use online banking, checkyour transactions every few days. Or,check your credit card and bank state-ments as soon as they arrive and con-tact your bank or card provider if younotice anything you are not sure of.
Stay safe when using yourcards this Christmas
In many households, part of the funof eating Christmas pudding is find-ing a trinket that predicts your for-tune for the coming year. Forinstance, finding a coin means youwill become wealthy. A ring meansyou will get married; while a buttonpredicts bachelorhood. The idea ofhiding something in the puddingcomes from the tradition in the Mid-dle Ages of hiding a bean in a cakethat was served on Twelfth Night.Whoever found the bean became"king" for the rest of the night.
The "Twelve Days ofChristmas"gifts: a partridge in a peartree, two turtledoves, three frenchhens, four calling birds, five goldrings, six geese laying, seven swansswimming, eigh maids milking, nineladies dancing, ten lords leaping, eleven pipers piping, and twelvedrummers drumming. There are 364gifts altogether, one for everyday ofthe year.
St. Francis of Assisi introducedChristmas carols to formal churchservices.
In 1647,Oliver Cromwell bannedChristmas as he believed that feast-ing and revelry on what was sup-posed to be a holy day to be immoral.Anyone caught celebrating was ar-rested. The ban was lifted in 1660when the Puritans power and Charles11 became King of England.
December 25th was not celebrated asthe birthday of Christ until the yearAD440.
A Christmas Eve superstition is thatat midnight, all the sheep in the fieldsturn and bow towards the east.
BoXing Day is so-called because it isthe traditional day for opening theChristmas Box (Alms Box) to sharethe contents with the poor.

According to RGDatathe “multiplier effect”means that €1 spent lo-cally is worth €4 while€1 spend in a globalchain is worth a fractionof that.
How the Multiplier Effectworks
A really basic example of howthe multiplier effect works andhelps the local economy is as fol-lows;
I go to my local electrical shopone morning and spend €100 onsome electrical appliance. Laterthat morning the owner of theelectrical shop goes to the localgarage and pays for €100 worthof long overdue maintenance tohis car. The mechanic has aChristmas party coming up andneeds some new clothes so hegoes to the local clothes shop andspends €100. The owner of theclothes shop goes to the local hairsalon and spends €100 on a beau-tiful new upstyle for Christmas. The hairdresser visits the localbutcher and buys €100 worth ofmeat…… This story could keepgoing on and on re-spending/recycling the samemoney throughout the communi-ty. In this very basic example€500 has been spent in the localeconomy (of course the figuresare rounded off for convenience, but hopefully you get the basic
idea) Now just suppose I boughtmy electrical appliance onlinefrom overseas or instead of sup-porting the local trader I went toa large foreign owned multina-tional?
You may say that you get bettervalue for money buying online orin the multinationals. That’s fairenough. Everybody is looking forthe best value they can. But largenumbers of people making a con-scious effort to spend an extra bitlocally can and does make a dif-ference. For instance, instead ofone person spending €100 wecould break it down into 10 peo-ple spending an extra €10 or 20people spending an extra €5 lo-cally. Imagine the over 40,000readers of the Tipp Tatler spend-ing just an extra €10 or €20 withsmall independent retailers. That’s not an extra €10 on whatyou would already be spending, that’s just spending it locally in-stead of giving it to some globalcorporation to divide up amongsttheir shareholders.
Local businesses support commu-nities, they employ local trades-people, they buy local goods andservices, they support local clubsand sporting bodies,
Just ask yourself the next timeyou go to buy something “Willthe money I spend on this itemmake its way back into my com-munity. Or will it leave the coun-try and provide no benefitwhatsoever to me, my family, myfriends or neighbours.
The “Multiplier Effect”The Importance of Supporting Local Business
(Repeated from last issue to help drive the message home)
Tipp Tatler www.tipptatler.ie
Borrisoleigh Craft Fair1. Local Economic Stimulus.
When you purchase at locally ownedbusinesses rather than nationallyowned, more money is kept in thecommunity because locally-ownedbusinesses often purchase from otherlocal businesses and service provid-ers . Purchasing local helps grow oth-er businesses.
2. Non Profits Receive GreaterSupport.
Local business owners donate moreto local charities than non-local own-ers.
3. Unique Businesses Create Char-acter & Prosperity
The unique character of your localcommunity is defined in large part bythe business that reside there, andthat plays a big factor in your overallsatisfaction with where you live andthe value of your home and property.
4. Environmental Impact Is Re-duced.
Small local business usually set upshop in the town/village centre, pro-viding a centralized variety that ismuch friendlier to a community'swalk score than out of town shoppingmalls. This generally means contrib-uting less to sprawl, congestion, habi-tat loss and pollution.
5. Most New Jobs Are Provided ByLocal Businesses.
Small local businesses are the largestemployers nationally. Plus the morejobs you have in your local commu-nity the less people are going to have
to commute which means more timeand less traffic and pollution.
6. Customer Service Is Better.
Local businesses often hire peoplewith more specific product expertisefor better customer service. You arealso going to see these people aroundtown and they are less likely to berude because they have to face youday after day.
7. Local Business Owners Invest InCommunity.
Local businesses are owned by peo-ple who live in the community, are less likely to leave, and are moreinvested in the community's welfareand future.
8. Public Benefits Far OutweighPublic Costs.
Local businesses require compara-tively little infrastructure and moreefficiently utilize public services rela-tive to chain stores.
9. Competition And DiversityLeads To More Consumer Choices.
A marketplace of thousands of smallbusinesses is the best way to ensureinnovation and low prices over thelong-term.
10. You Matter More
We talk a lot about exerting influencewith your purchasing choices, or"voting with your wallet." It's a factthat business respond to their custom-ers but your values and desires aremuch more influential to your localcommunity business than the largechain stores.

Buying local products at locally ownedbusinesses keeps money circulatingcloser to where you spend it.This creates a ripple effect as thosebusinesses and their employees in turnspend their money locally.Unfortunately, most corporate chainssend most of your money out of town.
If everyone in a community spends agreater percentage locally, the multipliereffect turns that into big bucks for thelocal economy. For example, increasinglocal spending from 50% to 80% morethan doubles the money - therefore€200 spent locally could have close to€500 in impact on the community!

By buying local goods, you maximize your money's impact andminimize fuel use and CO2 production. Produce from the super-market travels up to 92 times farther than produce grown locally.

(Not including the Government press secretary Eoghan ÓNeachtain, who was paid a salary of €138,655 last year.)
Mark Kennelly a Veteran FGer (€168,000) first worked with FineGael during the Rainbow Coalition as a researcher at the EuropeanParliament. He was then elevated to the position of special adviser toMichael Lowry in 1995. He played an “important role” in Pro-
gramme for Government negotiations and operated as Mr Kenny’selection tour manager.
Andrew McDowell also breaking the salary cap at €168,000. An“economist in the Fine Gael tradition”. First cousin once removed,Michael McDowell and another ex-Forfas. Joined FG in 06 where heworked for Finance spokesman Bruton and later Noonan. AngelaFlanagan and Paul O’Brien are both former party policy officers, each earn €80,051 .Tom Fabozzi is Fine Gael’s “Director of Media & Research”. Hecame from TV3 where he was producer of Tonight with VincentBrowne and Ursula Halligan’s old show The Political Party. Heholds a masters in Political Communication and will be “responsiblefor developing and implementing the Party’s communication strate-gy”.
Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore’s chiefhandler is Mark Garrett who the Phoenix describes as one of the“Blairite modernisers” in the party and is another one over the cap on€168,000 . Colm O’Reardon again over on €155,000 is policy direc-tor for the party and has worked for the ERSI so we have big hopes.Jean O’Mahony a policy analyst is in the €80,051–€98,424 range.
Finbarr O’Malley is legal advisor on €83,337 and also linked toRabbitte’s department .
Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney had drafted in former chiefexecutive of Greencore USA Fergal Leamy. He had quite an impres-sive CV which again warranted a breach of the cap at €130,000. Hehas since vacated the position, perhaps having looked into the abysswe don’t know. Áine Kilroy is a former researcher for FergusO’Dowd and netting €80,051 .
Seán Mac Cárthaigh (€83,337), was Dublin correspondent of TheIrish News before moving to Paris for The Times (London). More re-cently he was Assistant Editor of The Sunday Business Post. Sean isnow advisor to Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht JimmyDeenihan having previously been director of public affairs with theArts Council. Also there is Jim Kenny - his salary is “in line with theguidelines set down by Government on staffing ministerial offices”.
Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald hashired Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and Marion Mannion both in the€80,051–€92,672 range. Minister for Communications, Energy andNatural Resources Pat Rabbitte has hired former chief executive ofthe Irish Travel Agents’ Association Simon Nugent for again over at€97,200Helping Ruairí Quinn are John Walshe and Deirdre Grant. Walsh(€92,672) was Education correspondent and Editor at the Irish Inde-pendent for over 18 years while Deirdre Grant (€86,604) is a formerTV3 programmer and wife of Karl Brophy, Independent News &Media’s Director of Corporate Affairs.
We generally try to avoid politics here, preferring positivity to the negative doom and gloom that pervades at the moment. How-ever I recently came across a recent entry on the political website itsapoliticalworld.wordpress.com which is the group blog ofwww.politicalworld.org a political forum for political debates and discussions. Now I would always have assumed that a politicaladvisor to a government minister would be advising on policy etc. However as you read through the article you will see howmany of these advisers are in fact nothing more than PR professionals whose job is to advise their employers on public relationsmatters ie. maintain a favourable public image. They also have strong links to the national media organisations (which helpsexplain why journalists rarely seriously criticise politicians in case they jeopardise a future lucrative role as an advisor/spinDoctor). So, as you sit down over Christmas, wondering is your job safe, will you get a job, how to pay your bills, how yourchildren who have emigrated are getting on etc. Remember that while unsecured bondholders and bankers are receiving vastamounts of OUR money due to a situation that WE did not create, that OUR government, paid by US to represent US,appears to be more concerned with appearing good on TV and in the national media.
Irish Government Special AdvisersMr Tatler Investigates
Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government PhilHogan has hired Claire Langton at €80,051 and Sean McKeown at€92,672 who was Chief Executive Officer of the Kilkenny CountyEnterprise Board. Mary Kenny has worked with Minister for Fi-nance Michael Noonan since forever and gets €83,337 for her trou-bles.
Noonan had a new press advisor appointed 14/11/11 replacing EoinDorgan who is gone into the DOF. No details as yet.
Ronan O’Brien is in the cuts wing of Finance with Brendan How-lin. He was director of communications and marketing at CharteredAccountants Ireland and was advisor to Ruairí Quinn when he wasleader of the Labour Party which we assume means he too can breakthe cap at €114,000.. Anne Byrne was Member of the MedicalCouncil 1984-1993 and Programme Manager in Health and Environ-ment under previous administrations. She was also and adviser toLeas Cheann Comhairle 2007-2011 and picks up €83,337.
In health Mark Costigan who was a Deputy Government Press Sec-retary and a former spokesman for Mary Harney has been retained byDr James Reilly. Previously he was a journalist, including PoliticalEditor for Today FM. €92,672 . Sean Faughnan former Fine Gaelofficial is there in the €80,051–€92,672 range.
On Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton’steam is Ciarán Conlon. He hit the headlines on budget day as thegovernment took over a billion in cuts to welfare and services itemerged Enda Kenny had overruled his two finance ministers toagain break the cap and pay the former Fine Gael communicationsdirector €127,000. Conor Quinn is also here on €80,051 .
Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has taken on Thomas Cooney andJane Lehane both in the €80,051–€98,424 range. Cooney is an aca-demic and well known for his views being closer to Shatter then Ri-chard Boyd Barrett.
Liam Cahill is former head of hunting lobby group, RISE andformer head of PR for AIB and Intel. He was programme manager toFianna Fáil minister David Andrews in the Reynolds government.Worked for Pat Rabbitte while Labour were in opposition. Now PRadviser to Fine Gael Minister Shane McEntee.
A full house!
Kathleen Barrington is one of Ireland’s best journalists, full stop. Her work in the SBP over the last few years has earned her hero sta-tus among some of us. The articles (which can be found linked onPoliticalworld.org) were vital in piecing together the murky eventsthat brought us here. This Summer she was appointed special advisorto Joan Burton. While everyone wishes her well it was somewhatdisappointing news to say the least. There is a poignant moment inthe clip of Enda launching of all things the “new” IFSC strategy. Asthe Taoiseach waffles about the bankers lofty plan and a “responsibleon-shore tax jurisdiction”. Kathleen is spotted coming out the door ofgovernment buildings behind.
However, Joan’s alignment with Barrington lends some credence tothe theory that she was overlooked for a finance post because of cer-tain official’s discomfort with Joan asking the “wrong” questionswhile in opposition. Let’s hope Joan and Kathleen are playing thelong game. Naivety could be getting the better of me there but withso little to hang on to we take what we can get.
Joining her in social protection is solicitor Ed Brophy. He worked inEndesa Ireland as the Legal and Procurement Director. Previously hewas a Senior Associate in Arthur Cox Solicitors. Again over the capat €127,796Despite originally telling us his pay would be “in accordance withrates approved by the Department of Public Expenditure and Re-form” Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar se-
cured another break in the cap for Brian Murphy who is set toreceive €105,837. Defending Enda on the Ciarán Conlon issue Min-ister Varadkar said that higher salaries had to be given in order to at-tract a high calibre of people, which was the very thinking behindJobsbridge no doubt.. Mr. Murphy was Director of Commercial Af-fairs with the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association. So maybe staying with Leo if he ever makes it to health. Nick Miller heretoo and paid ahem, “in accordance with rates approved by the De-partment of Public Expenditure and Reform”.
Chief Whip Paul Kehoe for some reason needs an advisor and hiredMark O’Doherty. Salary not available
Róisín Shortall who being a junior minister had not been expected toappoint advisers managed to secure one of those exemptions that al-most everyone else who asked got and hired Irish Times journalistMaev-Ann Wren. However the Super in Super Junior entitled WilliePenrose to two advisers. Back on the dole queue (unless he can gethis Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown county council seat back) is unsuccess-ful Labour general election candidate Aidan Culhane, who was TDAlex White’s running mate.
FG kindly provided a list of the FF/GP advisers last year and it is stillavailable here
The Government, on the recommendation of the Taoiseach, has ap-pointed Mr. Martin Fraser, Assistant Secretary, Department of theTaoiseach, to be Secretary General to the Government and SecretaryGeneral of the Department of the Taoiseach, with effect from 1st Au-gust 2011. Mr Fraser has been an Assistant Secretary in the Depart-ment since 2007, having previously been Director of the NorthernIreland Division. He replaces Dermot McCarthy, who retired inSeptember. Dermot was appointed Secretary General to the Govern-ment in January 2000 and Secretary General of the Department inJuly 2001. He features here because he sat at the cabinet table andsurely wasn’t short of advice. I had flagged his departure during thesummer on the forum and the original figures released (drumroll)€114,000 a year and an immediate lump sum of €342,000. Much tomy surprise when the hullabaloo kicked off in September the num-bers had taken quite a jump. Compensation for the prospect of a postin Rome disappearing we’ll never know?
By; FIVE (Oireachtas Retort)6.12.2011Authors notes:
Next time a Minister compares Social Welfare in the North to oursyou can gently remind them that in Britain, the highest paid adviserearned €164,000 last year.
As I wrote this it was hard not to notice there isn’t a single womanover the cap and most appear to be in the “basic” 80k range includingthose who have been with TDs for some time unlike these talentedblow ins from the private sector. While I am of the firm belief thatalmost everyone featured is paid too much (especially as spin is orderof the day ) it seems even the gravy train has catching up to do .
While this Government is spending less then the last shower. Wastingless money the Fianna Fáil is hardly much of an achievement. Basedon these incomplete figures breaking the cap cost the governmentsavings of €527633. More if you include advisers to junior ministersand the chief whip. I know a bondholder wouldn’t wipe their nosewith it but that money would go a long way towards SNAs, bags ofturf and medication that makes life just manageable. Instead the coa-lition offers a bailout to the world of PR for people who apparentlyrefused to work for ninety two thousand euro per year.

Last weeks Budget paved the way todestroy economies in Rural Irelandwhile raking in millions for Bankstersand Bondholders
The budget last week was a savageattack on the people of rural Irelandwhich will further erode our localeconomies while slavishly keepingon the road to paying back thegambling debts of ForeignBanksters and Bondholders whohad long since given up on gettingtheir money back. Joan Burton’s savage attack onsingle parents would makeMargaret Thatcher proud. The cutsto the elderly were equally savageas were the cuts to the disabled.Much was spoken about thereversal to the reduction of age ofentitlement for disability allowancefrom 18 to 16 but the fact of thematter is that all Governmentministers signed off that cut andthought it would slip throughunnoticed. There were also savagecuts in education which will hitthose with less ability to payhardest. It is of course a budget full of Uturns which is being presented as abudget that has equality at the verycore of it. Nothing could be furtherfrom the truth but the truth is avictim of the lavish amount ofmoney paid for by you and I for the16 extra spin doctors hired byLabour and Fine Gael to tell youthat they have you in their mindwhile they slavishly follow thedoctrine handed down to them bythe Eurocrats that insist that illegalBondholders should be looked afterfirst while our economy teeters onthe brink of destruction. This Government has had noproblem in finding an EXTRA €13million for payoffs and pensionsfor their former colleagues andextra 3.8 million for Special
ADVISORS some of whom havebroken their own self-imposedpayment cap The Gravy train rollson for Government cronies whilethe rest of us face austerity to paythe bill. Democracy is being madea mockery of by these charlatans. The increase in price in Petrol andincrease in motor tax is an attackon those lucky enough to have ajob in North Tipperary as 70% ofpeople in North Tipperary needtheir cars to get to work. In fact ourbudget had to be presented to theGerman Parliament before it waspresented to the Irish People.Labours way or Frankfurt’s way itis not Mr Gilmore! Two new taxes were brought in byMr Noonan in the shape of theHousehold charge of €100 and the€50 euro septic tank inspectioncharge. These are further attacks onRural Ireland particularly the septictank charge and both of them willbe opposed by ordinary people whohave enough at this stage. I willpersonally defend any person thatcan’t afford to pay these illegaltaxes from state bullying. I will letthe words of Mr Noonan after the2010 budget sum up my views onthe budget
“This was a puppet budget from apuppet Government who are doingwhat they are being told to do bythe I.M.F/E.C.B. You cannot cutand tax your way out of arecession. You can only grow outof a recession” Indeed Mr Noonanit’s a pity you didn’t listen to yourown words before donning the jackboots of your masters before usingthem to kick the people of Ireland.

PresentsIf you have a large circle of extendedfamily or friends to buy gifts for, itcan be very costly. You might be ableto reduce the stress and cost ofChristmas for everyone if you suggesta change in the way your family andfriends give presents. For example, you could suggest that your group:• Buy presents only for thechildren.• Have a Kris Kringle, whereeveryone draws a name out of a hatand buys a present only for that per-son.• Set a limit on the cost ofpresents.
Christmas shopping Stress reduction strategies for suc-cessful Christmas shopping include:• Make a list of all the giftsyou wish to buy before you go shop-ping. If you wait for inspiration tostrike, you could be wandering aim-lessly around the shops for hours. There are numerous businesses in thisissue of the Tipp Tatler offering ex-cellent gift ideas.• Buy a few extras, such aschocolates, just in case you forgetsomebody or you have unexpectedguests bearing gifts.• If possible, do your Christ-mas shopping early
The Christmas lunch (or dinner)Stress reduction strategies include:• If you are cooking lunch athome, delegate tasks. You don't needto do everything yourself.• Buy as many non-perisha-ble food items as you can in advance- supermarkets on Christmas Eve aregenerally extremely busy.• You may need to order par-ticular food items (such as turkeys)from your supermarket by a certaindate. Check to avoid disappointment.• Book well in advance if youplan to have lunch at a restaurant. Some restaurants may be fully
booked before Christmas, so don'twait till the last minute.
RelationshipsStress, anxiety and depression arecommon during the festive season. Ifnothing else, reassure yourself thatthese feelings are normal. Stress re-duction strategies include:• Don't expect miracles. Ifyou and certain family members bick-er all year long, you can be surethere'll be tension at Christmas lunch.• Avoid known triggers. Forexample, if politics is a touchy sub-ject in your family, don't talk about it.If someone brings up the topic, usedistraction and quickly move ontosomething else to talk about.• Use relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or focusing onyour breath, to cope with anxiety ortension.• Family members involvedin after-lunch activities (such as play-ing board games) are less likely to getinto arguments. Plan for something todo as a group after lunch if necessary.• People under stress tend to'self-medicate' with alcohol, cigarettesand other drugs. Try to remember thatdrugs can't solve problems or allevi-ate stress in the long term.
General health and wellbeingSome other ways to keep your stresslevels down include:• Try to be moderate - it maybe the season to be jolly, but toomuch food and alcohol is harmful, and drink driving is a real danger andillegal. If you can't (or don't want to)step off the social merry-go-round, atleast try to eat and drink in modera-tion.• Get enough sleep - plan foras many early nights as you can.• Keep moving - keeping upyour regular exercise routine can giveyou the fitness and stamina to make itthrough the demands of the festiveseason.

Hopefully it is now clear that living with adepressed partner or family member is verydifficult. Kameron Hardin and Marny Hallin their excellent book Queer Blues offersome helpful suggestions to the nonde-pressed members to prevent burnout, astate which is surely detrimental to familyand individual wellbeing. They offer 10suggestions:1. Get support from friends, family, sup-port groups or therapy to reduce a sense ofisolation and stress.2. Make time for yourself and continuewith your usual hobbies, social activitiesand friendships3. Exercise (especially aerobic exercise),and get plenty of sleep.4. Manage your time by making out prior-ities, but realise that you cannot get every-thing done.5. Take a break, and allow others to helpyou6. Stay out of the medication monitor role,i.e. do not take responsibility for having thedepressed person take his anti-depressants.That is his responsibility7. Keep a journal, talk to friends and spendtime alone.8. Say no when you need to. This meanstaking care of yourself.9. Practise active relaxation using deep(abdominal) breathing, relaxation tapes andlistening to soft music. Meditate, pray andmake up gentle rituals.10. Take a sabbatical, go away for a day, aweek or longer. Get a massage, read, godancing, do whatever you enjoy.
Those points are all about self-care. I wouldalso like to offer some other suggestionsabout living with a depressed partner. Itmight be helpful to think about depressionin the same way as you would if yourpartner had a physical complaint. This willhelp you to be considerate and empathic, and this may help make life more bearablefor you and your depressed partner. In thiscontext try and show small acts of kind-ness, even if the depressed person does notacknowledge it. When you feel frustrated itis easy to be provocative, so it is well toknow what your partner’s buttons are thatprovoke him or her. Avoid pushing thesebuttons when he or she is in a depressedstate. In other words be sensitive to how heor she is, even though you may feel angryat the time. It is not easy, but worthwhilefor both your sakes. There are various small ways to ease yourpartner’s burden. Perhaps you might offerto do the shopping, empty the rubbish bins,do the laundry, take the children out to givehim or her a break. Such small ways showsthe depressed person that you understand. This sense of understanding can be en-hanced if you discuss with your partner, when he or she, is not depressed how theywould like you to behave when depressionstrikes again.I think that it is important to educate your-self and learn all about depression. That isthe purpose of these articles. You couldalso ask a doctor about it. Read about it.This shows the depressed person that youcare about him or her.
Some of what has been written in relationto the family is also relevant in the contextof society. A family is, after all, a unit ofsociety, and one which functions on rela-tionships. It has been seen that depressionaffects how a person relates to others, andinterferes with normal relationships. Bychanging behaviours it damages how a per-son functions in society, and how one func-tions in society is extremely important inthe context of depression.
Unfortunately many people react negative-ly to a depressed person. This negativereaction may be in how another personfeels and thinks about a depressed individ-ual. Or indeed they may verbally react in anegative way. Their behaviour may beturning away from the depressed person, and, perhaps understandably, they often donot wish to continue contact with him orher, because they dislike negative mood.As well as this, depressed individuals findit very difficult to engage others or respondwith interest to them, and this further dis-courages contact.
Depressed people, too, are sometimesneedy and dependent, and others can viewthis as burdensome and irritating. Depend-ency of course, may not only be a sign ofdepression, it may also be a personalitytrait. Another personality trait which caninhibit social interaction is being shy, dis-tant or introverted. I don’t see anythingwrong with having an introverted (lookinginward) personality unless such introver-sive tendencies cause serious discomfort, making one feel inadequate or not goodenough in social situations. Nonetheless,Constance Hammen and Edward Watkinsargue that there is a strong association be-tween introversion and depression. Thismeans that if social interaction is stressfulit can arouse a person’s underlying vulner-abilities and trigger depression.

Health is something many people don’t tend to thinkabout until something happens. Health is also not some-thing that comes to mind when getting the hair done in ahair salon. However, it can be a very serious health issuefor some people. In the average hair salon, you can beexposed to many different chemicals without even realis-ing. Some people have had very serious allergic reac-tions after spending many years getting their regular haircolour done.
As time goes by, more and more chemicals are being cre-ated by the chemical companies. We are on average ex-posed to many more hundreds of chemicals than ourparents were and their parents before them. What doesthis all mean to the average person? It means that theyhave up to and around 300 synthetic chemicals acquiredfrom food, drugs and personal care products in their sys-tem. The combined effect of all these chemicals is en-tirely unknown.
It’s not all bad news though. For many thousands ofyears, we as humans have been using nature and we stillcan. It’s a choice.
Plants and herbs are the answer. Henna, for example, has been used quite effectively to colour hair. It’s messyif you try to use it at home, but it’s a very healthy option. It has no chemicals and it’s a treatment for hair and scalptoo. Henna has come a long way and can be used just aseffectively as a chemical colour with great results andcan in fact, look a lot better and more natural than thechemical option.
That’s why I use it in my salon Eco Hair. I refuse tosubmit to chemicals out of convenience. Henna takes alittle longer but it has so many benefits to me, the hair-dresser, by not having to breath in any nasty chemicals, and to you, the customer, by not having to worry aboutwhat impact it might have on your health.
Our health is our wealth and we reallyshould take care. Prevention is by far abetter option than cure.
