Timing is everything. Launching a wellness program after open enrollment may improve participationThe ramp-up to open enrollment generally includes a mass of employee communications, including notices of benefi ts changes, additions or eliminations; education about new benefi t plan features; and enrollment instructions and reminders to complete enrollment. The onslaught may make employees feel bombarded with too much information. Consequently, wellness experts assert employers should think twice before launching a wellness campaign during the open enrollment period.

Because “there is so much going on during that period,” Bob Carpenter, vice president of the health and wellness program unit at ComPsych, said he prefers employers to “roll out a comprehensive wellness program separately from open enrollment.”1
