Tips for Building a Growth Mindset

The word "yet" is valuable and should be used frequently in every classroom. Whenever students say they can't do something or are not good at something, the teacher should add, "yet." Whenever students say

they don't like a certain subject, the teacher should say, "yet." This simple habit conveys the idea that ability and motivation are fluid. To read more, click here.

Can you describe a time when you were a student, and you complained that a

subject/activity/assignment was just too hard? What did you teacher/parent do or say? Did s/he encourage a growth mindset (like saying “yet”) or a fixed mindset (like letting you skip

the problem)? How did you feel after completing the task (or giving up on it)? As a

student, how did you feel about receiving encouragement that was considered growth

mindset versus fixed mindset?

“I don’t get it!”

“…YET!” Reflect!
