College can be expensive. But you can explore ways to manage your costs—even before your student enrolls. Indiana University Bloomington has experts dedicated to helping you do just that. Share these five tips with your student and make a plan for their financial future.

Beginning October 1 of your student’s senior year, they may complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The information on the FAFSA determines your student’s eligibility for financial aid. We encourage all students to complete the FAFSA as early as possible to maximize their eligibility for scholarships, grants, and other aid.
1Submit the FAFSA.
At Indiana University, students can search available scholarships by selecting criteria that apply to them. College funding could also be as close as your own backyard! Local businesses, faith groups, and nonprofit organizations often provide scholarships. Check with your student’s guidance counselor about funding opportunities in your community, city, and state.
2Research funding opportunities.

Many schools offer different price points for different types of housing. At Indiana University Bloomington, students can search for a place to live based on amenities, neighborhood, and cost. Choosing to live in cooperative housing, for example, can save students thousands of dollars each year.

Many universities offer on-campus jobs with flexible hours that can help students earn cash to offset some of their costs. Indiana University is proud to offer a variety of employment opportunities, all of which pay at least $10.15 per hour. If your student earns $3,000 per academic year—$12,000 over the course of four years—that’s $12,000 they don’t have to borrow and will never have to pay back.
4Explore available jobs.
From bike races to bowl games, concerts to community service, students have hundreds of ways to get involved and show their IU spirit.
Any university your student considers should make it easy to learn about options for funding their education.
