THE NOTICE BOARD

The Ravenswood engine run was a success with

quite a few members from Townsville and sur-

rounding districts turning up to give the old

girls some TLC. All present then headed down

to the local pub for a burger [Enormous] and

a tour of the pub and the managers collecta-

bles. In all it was a very enjoyable day and we

newbies learned a lot about the old engines

and what to look out for.

The AGM was held on September 27th, with no change in office bearers for the

president ,treasurer or secretary.

Keith Hendricks has agreed to continue as treasurer until a replacement is found.

If you are interested, Keith is happy to show you the ropes!!

Any one taking this position would have the full support and accumulated knowledge

of the club members and officials, so please don’t be shy.

Restoration of

2 HP RONALDSON BROS & TIPPET PETROL ENGINE By Mervyn Carey

Name Plate Data:

[ENGINE] Quote No. 105339 HP: 2 [4 stroke]

RPM: 1000 TYPE N

Other Specs: Year of manufacture is late 1961

Cylinder dimensions: 3” Bore X 3 ¼” Stroke

Back ground and history:

Manufactured by Ronaldson Bros. & Tippet Ltd, at Ballarat in Victoria, which utilising an open water jacket for cooling.

Tony Binder sourced it from Innisfail some time ago, and passed it on to Merve about 15 months ago. There is little

known about where this unit was used or for what purpose. This unit was missing the Magneto, spark plug, water hopper

and Muffler. It had been idle for many a year was looking for some TLC, and as such things happen it followed Merve

home.

The “acorn drive hub” shows that this unit originally drove a wide belt as was the preferred method of transmission in its

day. The advantage of using the acorn shape was that it tended to self centre the belt on the drive hub.

The Project process:

Merve has sourced a copy of the Ronaldson Bros. & Tippet workshop manual which describes the vari-

ous models of machines made by the company and it has proved to be invaluable in the restoration pro-

cess not only on this machine but also on other units which have previously been restored. This book is

the definitive bible for Ronaldson and Tippet motors with excellent exploded diagrams parts lists and

descriptions.

Preparing / manufacturing the engine parts:

After stripping the engine down and cleaning and checking for faults and parts requiring necessary re-

pair, Merve was ready start work on the machine. The rings and bearings were in good condition and so

were reused. The missing magneto was an RS1 and was sourced form a repairer in Melbourne. A new

champion D16 spark plug sourced locally. The flywheel appears to be a non genuine item and required a replacement re-

tractable handle which Merve manufactured in his workshop. The water Hopper was made from plate steel that had been

bent up and welded. Merve actually had this hopper made some time ago for another project, but repurposed it for use on

this project. The exhaust muffler is a piece of 4 inch pipe which has had discs welded to either end, with an inlet hole

drilled into the disc and a socket welded in place. The outlet disc of the muffler has had the appropriate sized holes drilled

into it.

Disassembled parts after checking, cleaning and painting ready for reassembly Partially reassembled Motor Painting the unit: The Motor is painted using ”Deep Brunswick Green” paint with added hardener to overcome the problem of spilt petrol degrading the paint work. The damage to the paint work was an ongoing problem till Merve spoke to the Dulux people and they supplied the added hardener to do the job. Reassembly was carried out and the unit tested. Several leaks were detected and were quite persistent. Eventually Merve disassembled the motor and took the offending parts to NQ engine reconditioners. The cylinder and piston had rust marks on them as evidence that the water had seeped through the internals of the engine. The head was shaved as was the mating surface of the bore and the bore was given a clean up and honed. One head stud was also replaced. Merve has had several jobs done with this firm and is very pleased with their assistance and professionalism. So they come highly recommended. Merve has made his own gaskets using Garlock 2950 1/16” blue gasket and has found it to be suitable for most applica-tions. Whilst mounting the Water hopper a mismatch between the inlet and outlet water connections on the motor required that an extra 1/32” rubber insertion gasket was added to the lower garlock gasket whilst the top connection utilised the rubber in-sertion only. This has been quite successful and removed another potential leak.

Due to the way that open water jacket cooled motors operate, eventually rust builds up inside

the water hopper. After discussions with Dave Tindale, Merve has added soluble oil to the water thus preventing the slow corrosion of the internal surfaces of the hopper. This also mini-

mises the evaporation when the motor is at rest so you don’t comeback to it after some time to find it empty and rusty. This has been so successful that Merve has added soluble oil to all of his open jacket water cooled motors. Thanks Dave! Nice Colour!

The blue is soluble oil ! The engine is now reassembled ready for a test start, and once the CV 19 restrictions are lifted the engine and pump will feature in future displays. Having sorted out the Ronaldson and Tippet Motor it was now time to pay some attention to the driven side of the display.

Part 2 of this restoration will be in next months news letter.
