MAJOR ACTIVITIES
Patriotic March
Patriotism is the only balsam that will heal any social evil that hinders
our nation from becoming the supreme power. The affection and attitude of
the youth towards the mother land is the deciding factor in promoting the
notion of social responsibility of enjoying the freedom for what it is meant.
The dream of every Indian is to have a Hunger-free, Corruption- free,
Caste-free and Terrorism – free India in 2020. This can become a reality
only when the love towards one‟s nation is selfless. This mighty India can be
chiseled only by the younger generation through Gandhian Principles.
To inculcate this type of patriotism in the minds of the younger
generation, a team of 60 volunteers (40 boys and 20 girls) and three
programme officers from Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirappalli led by Dr. P.
Rajkumar, senior NSS Programme Officer, took up this remarkable Patriotic
March by re-enacting the Dandi march and tread the paths that Mahatma
Gandhi has travelled during his life time. The team has covered a total
distance of 390 kms walking through all the villages that Mahatma had
visited.
The main objective of this Patriotic march is to draw the attention of
the youth of our nation in joining hands together in building a strong and
mighty nation.
Mr. Ranjith Kumar, IAS, flagged off the march on 29th November 2011
at Sabarmathi Ashram. Many of the dignitaries including the Youth Officer,
NSS Regional Centre, Ahmedabad, President of Gujarat Tamil Association
were also present to witness this historically important event.

Moments to Cherish
There were days of uncertainties. On the day of crossing the Mahi
Sagar River we were so exhausted after crossing seven kilometers across the
river. We were overridden by thirst and had to walk for miles before we could
see any inhabitants to quench our thirst. The threat of quicksand was
shaking our spirits, as we walked through the loose sand bed of the river.
But the mere thought of our noble effort of the march, had blown away all
the fear from our hearts and brought a staunch spirit of completing the task
without looking back anymore.

Values Imbibed:
The march has implanted deep in our hearts some memorable
lessons. We learnt what it is to be a real leader. We never knew where we
will stay and what will we have for food. Still the students were so patient
and showed good tolerance in all levels. It is not an exaggeration, if we claim

it to be a real life workshop on Personality development and leadership
quality. We all realized the real meaning of responsible citizenship and
carrying out our duty without letting it to go in vain. The importance of
practicing “Truth and Non- violence” in our day to day life is deeply rooted in
our minds. The team has taken a vow of leading a satyagrahi‟s life for the
rest of their life.
Response of the Public to the Marching Team
The team has received an overwhelming response from every quarters
of the state. On the 4th day, Shri. Dinsha Patel, Minister for Mines, Nadiad
greeted us and waved the flag for that day‟s march. Mr. Paresh Patel,
Congress President of Anand, Mr. Amitkumar A. Chawda, MLA, Borsad, Mr.
Ajith Singh, Asst. Commissioner of police and Sarpanjs in all the villages
received us with happiness. Many students belonging to different schools,
colleges, universities and public from different villages joined our march and
accompanied us till the end of the day‟s march. Shri. Parshottam Rupala,
Vice-President of Bharatiya Janata Party met the team on the day of
departure. Many enquired us about our march and were taken by surprise
and sense of honor. The feedback from all sectors was very positive and they
all promised to stand with us in reaching the goal of this noble cause.
The news of the march had reached the nook and corners throughout
the state through the media. Especially TV9 television channel has
exclusively covered our march and telecasted it in their channel. The news
was published in leading national newspapers such as Indian Express and
state newspapers such as Gujarat Samachaar, Sandesh etc.,
