TYPE OF LABORATORY: BSL2

CONSTRUCTION OF LABORATORY

  There was no UPS in case of emergency light.

   No dress changing room in visited laboratory.

  The doors of visited laboratory were not only single door but also not self-closing (9

means none automated).

 

There were many blind corners in the visited laboratory.  When I visit the laboratory I saw porous material used in laboratory in the form of chairs.

  Benches used in laboratory were not fire, acid, alkalis or other chemical proof.

  Furniture used in laboratory was not moveable

  There was no CCT TV camera in laboratory.

  There was a sink for hand washing but it was located away from exit door.

   No eye washes station in the visited laboratory.

  There was no HEPA filter in the laboratory.

   No emergency exit door in visited laboratory.

SAFETY EQUIPMENTS

Following equipment and Instruments were available and placed on appropriate location in the

laboratory.

1.  Laminar flow

2. 

Autoclave3.  Shaking incubator

4.  Mechanical pipette devices

5.  Centrifuge safety cups

Other lab related work were also doing by lab personnel in the visited lab such as grinding,

 blending, shaking, mixing of chemicals and sonicating.

  Laboratory gas sterilizer was not available in visited laboratory.

 

There was no puncture-resistant container that used for the dispose of disposable

needles, syringes, and sharps.

  There was no a hard wall container used for transport of non-disposable material to a

 processing area for decontamination that cannot be decontaminated in autoclave.

STANDARD MICROBIOLOGY PRACTICES

  When I visit the laboratory, I saw some laboratory personnel did not wash their hand

when the entre in laboratory but they washed their hand when they leave the

laboratory. Some of the laboratory personnel were vaccinated and some were not.

  The laboratory staff was doing open bench practice that is strictly prohibited

according to biosafety rules.

  During the visit of laboratory I did not see any laboratory personnel who eat, drink,

and smoking in the laboratory but they use cosmetic material during lab practice.

  They used mechanical pipetting device rather than mouth pipetting (old method).

  The laboratory personnel were trained but not as trained as require.

  The staff of visited laboratory was not using gloves, laboratory coat, and face mask

during laboratory practice.

  The size of laboratory staff’s nails was  too large mostly female staff and they wear

open shoes that are against the biosafety rules.

  The doors of laboratory were open during lab work.

  The handling of pathogen microorganisms was not proper according to biosafety

rules.

 

They were not sterilizing equipment after they use those outside of the laboratory.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE SAFETY OF LABORATORY

  As I gathered information about visited lab according to this information it is the

responsibility of director or principle investigator laboratory, to reconstruct the lab

design according to biosafety rules.

  UPS should be available.

  Furniture should be fire and chemicals proof and also movable.

  Proper ventilation and air filtration system should be built.

It is also responsibility of director or principle investigator laboratory that take action against

those member of laboratory staff who did not follow the biosafety rules.
