Ho’olaulima Costume Contest

By: Jazzilyn Ojano

UPLINK and Ho’olaulima Student

The 7th Grade Ho’olaulima Team had their Annual Recycle Material Costume Contest on October 30, 2018. All the

teachers from the team were dressed up by their homeroom students who used recycled material to create unique

costumes. Students were given about 3 weeks to come up with and create their costumes. Recycled material such as

cardboard, toilet paper and newspaper were given to each homeroom for them to use and they could not add anything

but what was provided in the bag.

Mrs.Kitamuras kids dressed her up as Shrek, Mr. Rose’s kids dressed him up as a character from Fortnite,

Mrs.Miyazono was a Sushi Roll, Mr.Kurosawa was Ariel from Little Mermaid, Mr. Wagner was Caillou and last but

not least Mr.Inouye and Mrs.Kim was a bride and groom.

The purpose of this event was for team unity and to learn to work together. I also think it was important to have fun

and be able to make the teachers look funny. What I personally think of the event was that it was pretty hilarious

because one of Mr.Wagners homerooms students was singing the Caillou song. I also thought Mr. Kurosawa looked

like a very interesting mermaid, one of his “shells was up and the other was falling down.”

I hope that our team continues to do fun activities like this because make school more fun. I get to use my creative

side and also work with teachers in different capacities.

While all the costumes were amazing, the winner of this recycle costume contest was Mr.Kurosawa. I want to

congratulate his homeroom for a job well done as well as everyone who participated in this event.

UPLINK UPDATES

UPLINK Events Club

By: Princess Calapit

I am a student from the UPLINK After-School Program. I am a

part of this club that I really enjoy called “UPLINK Events”. In

this club, we plan and prepare special events for all the

students who attend UPLINK and we make sure that they are

able to have fun and participate in all the activities that we

plan. Our group brainstorms ideas at the beginning of each

quarter that we think people would enjoy, then we have a

discussion with our tutor about which event would be good

for us to put on. The hardest part of this club is figuring out

what events we can do that 200 students can participate in.

We previously planned a fall dance last quarter. To plan the

dance, the first thing did was list down supplies that we need.

Then, our tutor separated us into small groups. She gave each

group an job, for example one group was the DJ who listed

down types of songs to play on the day of the dance, another

group was the decorations and they made fall type of

decorations to put on the windows in the cafeteria. It was a

little stressful at the end because we didn’t know if we would

finish in time. But we did and everyone seemed to enjoy the

dance.

Our next event we are in the process of planning is a Harry

Potter themed scavenger hunt. Our group is planning escape

rooms for the scavenger hunt where we give the students

riddles and clues to solve, so they can complete that room

and move in to the next room.

What I like about uplink events is that we can set up things

the way we like to, and it’s a chance for us to have fun with

our friends in different events that hardly happen in school. I

am learning leadership skills, teamwork, communication and I

get to meet new people. I take pride in seeing the events that

we plan get executed and also when I see my classmates

having fun. I can’t wait to see how this Harry Potter

Scavenger Hunt turns out.

Get to Know My Tutor: Ms. Courtney

UPLINK Newspaper Club

This month the newspaper club interviewed an

awesome tutor, Ms. Courtney. She has been working

for uplink for two years. She originally joined uplink

due to her wanting to become a teacher. She is really

good at crafts and therefore, has been the uplink craft

tutor.

Outside of uplink, Ms. Courtney likes to dance hula,

hunt, and fish. She also has a job at UH Hilo, where

she works in the Disability Services Offices.

Ms. Courtney attended Waiakea Intermediate School

and really appreciates her time here. She will always

feel like a part of the Waiakea Intermediate Family.

Ms. Courtney has decided that she would like to

become a veterinarian and help all types of animals.

She is going to school at this time to become a

veterinarian.

Ms. Courtney would like to tell all the students at

Waiakea Intermediate School to always work hard,

enjoy school, and be involved in the school

community. She also believes that all students should

listen to the adults on campus and be respectful to

everyone and that would make Waiakea Intermediate

School a better place.

We would like to thank Ms. Courtney for taking the

time to share a little about herself and for her

dedication to helping all of us.

“Woodworking knowledge is good to have because you can use it to make stuff for yourself instead of buying it

from the store.”

-Kekoa Borges

“Mr. Taz teaches us hands-on work and how to use machines safely.”

-Kaysia Lesley-DelaRosa

“We’re learning skills like mathematics, measuring, and making stuff with our hands.”

-Jordan Halican

“Mr. Taz teaches good work ethic and the importance of quality work.”

-John Paul Tabile

Classroom Spotlight

Mr. Taz’s Shop classes have been hard at work, learning valuable life skills through hands-on learning. Students sign in

and out of the Shop to show how much time goes into making a product and to gain basic business knowledge.

Mr. Taz took part in the WHS Pumpkin Patch to help raise money for 8th grade class activities and to help recover the

cost of student projects.

Be on the lookout for future opportunities to purchase items made by Shop students!
