What causes it to sink?

The Titanic hits an iceberg creating a big gash on the left side in the hull of the ship 100m in length.

How were the people rescued?

The people were rescued by the 20 life boat on the side of the ship which held only 28 people.

The Carpathia came to the aide of the Titanic picking up some of the passengers in hope of surviving.

The Californian was the closest boat but did not hear the distress call until morning. If they had responded many more lives would have been saved.

Survivors` stories

Mrs. Daniel Warner Marvin was a survivor because a man gave up his seat on the life boat to save her.

“As I was put into the boat, he cried to me, ‘It’s all right, little girl. You go. I will stay.’ As our boat shoved off he threw me a kiss, and that was the last I saw of him."

The last survivor of the Titanic is Milvina Dean. She was only nine months old when she boarded the Titanic with her mother, father, and bother. They were on their way to America. After her father died in the tragedy her mother took them back to England and would not speak of it until Milvina was 8 years old. Milvina died at 97 on the 98th anniversary of the Titanic’s launch.
