Scholarship Types

The following scholarships are available through District 6040 and the Rotary International Foundation:District Study Abroad Scholarships

4 - $2,500 scholarships will be awarded for undergraduate or graduate study abroad during the 2015-16 academic year

Global Grant Scholarships

$30,000 scholarship grants awarded for graduate study in the 2015-16 academic year and beyond

Rotary Peace Fellowships

Fully funded academic fellowships at one of the Rotary peace centers

Scholarship Types

District Study Abroad Scholarship Grants ($2,500)Funding:

Funded by contributions to The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund/SHARE by Rotarians in District 6040. This scholarship is not eligible for matching funds from The Rotary Foundation.

Purpose:

Study Abroad Scholarships can be used for one or two semesters of undergraduate or graduate study outside the United States. These scholarships can be used to cover the cost of tuition, fees, educational supplies, room and board and round-trip transportation to/from the study site.

Scholarship Types

District Study Abroad ScholarshipsEligibility*

Applicant may be a college level undergraduate (sophomore, junior or senior) or a graduate student.

Applicant must reside in District 6040 or be currently enrolled at a higher education institution in District 6040. Residence within D6040 is determined by where the applicant pays income tax or where the applicant's parents reside if the applicant is considered a deduction on the parents income tax.

The applicant must be accepted for study at the time of application.

The applicant’s area of study and professional goals must be in one of The Rotary Foundation’s Six Areas of Focus.

Active and honorary Rotarians, or spouses, lineal descendants, spouses of lineal descendants, or ancestors of active or honorary Rotarians are not eligible to apply.

District Study Abroad Scholarships  

Requirements

Scholars must account for all expenditures, must provide documentation for all expenditures and must provide funding to cover all costs that exceed the amount provided by Rotary. All unspent funds must be returned to Rotary District 6040.

At the conclusion of their period of funded study, grant recipients must provide a written report to the District and must be willing to share their experiences with Rotary Clubs.

A hands-on humanitarian project in the geographical location of the foreign study program may be included in the study grant application.

Scholarship Types

Global Grant Scholarships (up to $30,000)Funding:

Funded by contributions from District 6040 Rotarians to The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund/SHARE. The Rotary Foundation World Fund matches these funds and no additional club support is required.

Purpose:

Global Grant scholarships are to be used for graduate study in a program that pertains directly to one or more of the following Six Areas of Focus:

Peace and conflict prevention and/or resolution

Disease prevention and treatment

Water and sanitation

Maternal and child health

Basic education and literacy

Economic and community development.

Term of scholarship must be for at least one year and no more than four years of graduate study.

The study institution must accept the scholar before the application is submitted for approval.

Applicant must reside in District 6040 or be currently enrolled at a higher education institution in District 6040. Residence within D6040 is determined by where the applicant pays income tax or where the applicant's parents reside if the applicant is considered a deduction on the parents income tax.

Global Grant ScholarshipsRequirements

Applicant will submit progress reports at a minimum of every 12 months for the term the scholarship including a final report within two months of completion of the scholarship period.

Applicant agrees to follow the terms and conditions specified in the global grant application form.

Scholarship TypesRotary Peace FellowshipsFunding:

Peace Fellowships are funded by the Rotary International Foundation.

Purpose:

Fully funded academic fellowships at one of Rotary’s peace centers. These fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and all internship/field study expenses. Two types of peace fellowships are available:

Master's Degree: The Rotary Foundation offers master’s degree fellowships at premier universities in fields related to peace and conflict resolution and prevention. Programs last 15 –24 months and require a practical internship of 2–3 months during the academic break. Institutions are:

Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US International Christian University, Japan University of Bradford, UK University of Queensland, Australia Uppsala University, Sweden

Professional Development Certificate: For those with more extensive experience in peace-related fields, Rotary offers a 3-month program in peace and conflict resolution at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. This program incorporates 2–3 weeks of field study.

Scholarship Types

Rotary Peace FellowshipsEligibility*

A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (at a minimum) with strong academic achievement.

Relevant work experience:

For master’s degree—3 years paid or unpaid

For professional development certificate—5 years and current full-time employment in a mid- to upper-level position

Proficiency in English for both fellowship types and in a second language for master’s degree.

Rotary Peace Fellows who have completed the master's degree program may not apply for the professional certificate program.

Active and honorary Rotarians, or spouses, lineal descendants, spouses of lineal descendants, or ancestors of active or honorary Rotarians are not eligible to apply.

Timeline for the 2015-16 academic year:

January 15, 2015 – Applications due to local club. It is suggested that clubs interview candidates

January 31, 2015 - Applications with endorsement of local club President are due to District 6040 Scholarship Committee

*Global Grants Only – Applicants selected by the District will be required to submit an online application through Rotary International

Rotary Peace Fellowship

Complete the applicant portion, and submit it to a local club or District 6040 for endorsement.

The deadline for submitting applications to Rotary International is July 1, while the deadline for submitting to a local club can vary (generally March–June).

How can clubs participate in District 6040 scholarship opportunities?

Download scholarship flyer from www.rotary6040.org and share at club meetings.

Add club contact information to the scholarship flyer and circulate to local universities.

Designate a club champion for scholarships and ask them to reach out to local students and universities to spread the word about District 6040 scholarship opportunities.

Encourage your local club to consider additional funding for study abroad scholarship applicants endorsed by the club.
