Preservation UpdatesBy Carol Roark, Interim Executive Director

Dallas High School/Crozier Tech

In early March, news broke of proposed redevelopment of the 1909 Dallas High School/Crozier Tech building. Wynne Jackson has developed a preliminary plan that would place 81 apartments in the historic school building and an additional 429 apartments in three new buildings.

Praetorian Building

Plans for the demolition of the Praetorian Building are moving forward. Although it is unfortunate to lose this earliest of Dallas skyscrapers, we have learned from those who have inspected the building report that the when the Praetorian was rebuilt and sheathed in paneling in 1960-61, its original façade was completely obliterated, and many interior elements were removed. Headington Companies acquired the Praetorian and other properties across Elm Street as a complement to the expansion of the Joule Hotel.

UNT System

 (Titche-Goettinger Building)

The UNT System, headquartered in the old Titche-Goettinger Building at 1901 Main Street, is planning to renovate its headquarters building to

increase classroom space and provide a temporary home for the new UNT Law School.

Preservation is Greenby Lisa Kays, Program Manager

Stewardship is the heart of the environmental

movement .  . . the only way we can really take care of

nature is by taking care of what is all around us and

believing in the power of preservation.

This was the message of a recent talk by architect and author Jean Carroon. Preservation and conservation go hand-in-hand, and it is often said that "the greenest building is one that is already built."  Read more . . .

Event Re-Cap: Cliff May in Dallas

Cliff May's ranch house aesthetic is a favorite of Preservation Dallas members. Last Saturday, an Intown Outing offered a chance to view a one-owner, virtually unaltered, custom Cliff May-designed home in Greenway Parks. The home is a Texas adaptation of May's design for the "Pace Setter House Program" developed by Elizabeth Gordon of House Beautiful.

Builder E. P. Lamberth and his wife Dorothy chose a corner lot for the w ide-angle, U-shaped home completed in 1950. May's ranch house design occupied a significant

place in residential architecture as the "middle ground" between traditional New England cottages and "modernist boxes." As a builder, Lamberth spared no expense in the quality or detailing of the house, and those elements still intrigue visitors.

As the crowd enjoyed patio breezes, Preservation Dallas Board Member

Maribeth Messineo Peters and Markeeta Brown, daughter of the owners, shared stories about the house and its many wonderful features, as well as the history of the Greenway Parks neighborhood.
