Disability Inclusive Development

• Disability-inclusive development focuses particularly on the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities. It actively seeks to ensure the full participation of people with disability: women, men, girls and boys as empowered self-advocates in all development processes, emergency responses and works to address the barriers which hinder their access and participation.

Sustainable livelihoods

• Disability is linked to a higher probability of being poor. In many countries two-thirds or more of all persons with disabilities are unemployed, and many of those who are employed are only able to find part-time work.

Healthy Communities: Barriers to access quality health care for persons withdisabilities

• Health: Not just about access• Costs: evidence 1/3 people without disabilities unable

to afford health care compared to half of people with disabilities (51-53%) (World Health Surveys ).

• Access to transport: difficult to travel to the health centre, and transport or health centre not be accessible.

• Health care staff and training: inadequately trained staff to accommodate needs or do not treat persons with disabilities with respect.

• Gender: women and girls with disabilities face additional barriers; constraints on travelling independently or preconceptions about their needs to access services e.g. sexual and reproductive health services

Life long learning

• Education starts at birth, community based and for ALL learners.

• CBM supports and advocates for inclusive education as the mostappropriate option for learners with a disability. This approach requires specialist support, is often linked with inclusive education resource facilities and requires development of local skills and capacity. Therefore we recognisethat complementary or alternative models also have a place and may be the best choice in some circumstances.
