2013 TERM DATES

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents

It has been a successful first half of term with many enjoyable events for the students. Several will

be recognised in this newsletter.

DRAMA PRODUCTION SPECTACULAR

Congratulations to Head of The Arts Peta Raneri, and the talented cast and crew of The Brothers

Grimm Spectaculathon who performed recently to great acclaim in the Victoria Morgan Arts

Centre. Thank you to all members of the school community who supported this event. I look

forward to next year’s production with a great sense of anticipation.

FOUNDERS’ DAY

Our Founders’ Day celebrations are always enjoyed by students and staff. This year’s event,

celebrating the School’s 24th birthday, commenced with the whole school attending a Eucharist in

the Berry Durston Indoor Sports Centre led by our Chaplain Reverend Dave. We were pleased to

welcome to our service Philip Goldsworthy, Director Mission and Planning of the Anglican Schools

Commission, and three members of the local deanery, The Reverend Jan Boyle, The Reverend

Lorna Green and The Reverend Ben Van Der Klip.

At lunchtime the tradition of Year 12s sizzling sausages to feed the whole school continued. For

sports enthusiasts, the deciding round of the Principal’s Cup was staged in front of a large crowd

with the staff team defeating the senior students in netball enabling them to retain the trophy for

2013. This year the three sport event was very competitive with the guile and experience of the

-spot portraits by the Year 1s were as popular as ever.

All money raised on Founders’ Day was used to establish the Emergency Relief Fund for school

families in crisis.

IB PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (PYP) EXHIBITION

The Exhibition, the culmination of the PYP, will be held on 5 September. The Opening will be held in

the Chapel at 8.45am with the Exhibition displayed in the Year 7 Centre. Our Year 6 students and

staff have worked diligently for several weeks to prepare for this important event. Primary and

OPEN MORNING

Our Term 3 Open Morning will be held on Friday 6 September. Commencing at 9.30am in the

School has vacancies for some years in 2014. Due to demand we have added an extra Year 6

class for next year. All enquiries are welcomed by the Registrar Ann Brightmore.

PRIMARY

Thank you to all parents who joined me for the Coffee Morning last Wednesday. We discussed the key factors that

determine the emotional development of our children, including the age old debate about the impact of nature

(our biology) and nurture (our relationships and level of care in the early years). It is clear that mental health issues

are unfortunately becoming more common for this generation of children, particularly as growing up too fast is

a symptom of our popular culture as children become 'sexualised' at an earlier age and are exposed to a wide

variety of mixed messages from the world of social media. As parents and teachers, we are struggling

to instil messages of mutual respect and etiquette, while reality TV celebrates rude and inappropriate levels

of competition and disrespect. This makes it all the more important to be 'bigger, stronger and wiser' as parents

and to 'take charge' whenever necessary. These tenants of the 'Circle of Security' programme are certainly worth

remembering when we are tempted to be friends with our kids – and forget that they really need us to

be authoritative; when we are in control, our children feel safe and secure. Importantly, we must remember to

enjoy our children, to celebrate successes and delight in them, to build nurturing and healthy

relationships. Positive emotions are infectious and more powerful than the negative. There

is a disclaimer; I mentioned many times that I, as a parent, am just as guilty as many others in not always getting it

right. On Wednesday 25 September at 8.30am in the Chapel I will summarise my first presentation and then discuss

how we can use the Circle of Security to be 'good enough' parents and foster the emotional development of our

children. Fortunately, the PYP Learner Profile has a strong emotional component, so our students are constantly

reminded to be caring and principled citizens. Please join me in the Chapel on the 25 September to discuss

further.

After nearly six weeks at John Wollaston, I would like to compliment all parents within our school community for the

wonderful job you must be doing to produce such an enthusiastic, friendly and

polite student population. I thoroughly enjoy my handshake duties each morning and I delight in discussing

important issues with all students during assembly times. I am encouraging all students to focus on the 'good things'

that happen each day. We all tend to dwell too much on the few negatives, so actually thinking about and

discussing 'what went well' each day can be a powerful way to become more positive about all aspects of

life. I will ask the students to quiz you about the good things that happen to you, so you may want to start noting

what went well each day to be prepared!

OUTDOOR PLAY

As you are aware we offer differentiated learning

experiences in each and every classroom in the Primary

School to meet the needs of our students.

We would like to extend this differentiated programme

to include the outside play area. While many children

enjoy running around and playing cricket and soccer at

recess and lunchtime, there are also those who like to

read, be involved in creative play or enjoy construction

activities. We are using the money raised during

Lightning Lunch to buy a variety of outdoor resources

that cater for the many different interests of our students.

One of the more popular clubs this year has been the

Lego club. We would like to offer Lego as an activity

that can be played in the ELC and in the Year 3- 6 area

during recess and lunchtime. Before purchasing any

Lego, I would first like to ask if there are any families who

have some spare Lego/Duplo stored away that they are

no longer using. If you do have some that you are

willing to donate to the School, could you please hand it

in to ELC Reception or Primary Administration. Thank you.

We look forward to providing a wide variety of engaging

and stimulating outdoor play activities.

FROM THE ELC

Spring is definitely in the air in the ELC! Chicks have

hatched in Year 1, Pre-Primary are growing plants,

Kindy are watching their class pets grow and Mrs

Nilsson has gone on maternity leave awaiting the

arrival of her first child. We welcome Mrs Louisa Searle

to the ELC Team. The Numbat children have enjoyed a

smooth transition with the warmth and expertise she has

brought to the classroom.

BETTER BEGINNINGS

On the 14 August, Shirley Reilly from Armadale Library

visited the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students. Each

child was given a fantastic pack that included a

picture book relevant to their age group, a library bag

and some information regarding the Better Beginnings

Program. This program recognises the important role

that parents play in their child’s literacy development.

We would like to encourage you to take advantage of

the resources available from your local library. Story

backpacks that include books, a puppet and a game

are available for loan as well as a range of fantastic

books that will appeal to the interests of all young

readers. Reading books, telling stories with puppets

and playing games are all fantastic ways you can

support your child’s literacy development at home.

WANTED

If you have any unwanted Lego or Duplo at home, we

would love it in the ELC. Please drop it into ELC

Reception or Primary Administration.

AMY COOMBE

Girls from Years 6-10, John Wollaston staff and parents were very fortunate to hear Amy speak last week. Amy draws

on personal experience to share her story and successes in a humorous but incredibly powerful way, providing

hope, inspiration and a great sense of positivity to those who hear her. A terrific turnout to the Parent Seminar

concluded a long but successful day for Amy. Many thanks to the P and F who funded Amy’s visit to the School.

ADAM PRZYTULA

Adam is a Chaplain and director of Armed for Life, speaking to students all over WA about issues which affect them

such as social media, body image, bullying, self-esteem and decision making. We have engaged Adam to speak

to our boys about some of the issues confronting them in their teens. The Year 11 and 12 boys heard Adam this

week, whilst the younger boys will have sessions with Adam next term. An information letter will come home; those

parents who do not wish their son to participate will need to return the slip to this effect.

YEAR 11 DINNER DANCE

This event will be held on Tuesday 10 September at Willow Pond Reception Centre in Canning Vale, 6.30pm to

10.30pm. Year 11 students have received letters and reply slips, however, if your child missed out please

encourage him/her to come and get one from me. Students are asked to wear sensible and modest smart casual/

semi-formal wear – no jeans or sneakers please. Please ensure that the permission slip is returned with all sections

completed by the due date.

RESPECT

Respect is one of John Wollaston’s four Core Values and underpins pretty much everything we do and expect in

our daily lives. Recently there have been several incidents where students have not shown respect to either

themselves, their peers or the adults on the School grounds. Students are expected to be respectful at all times – no

swearing or ‘mouthing off’, no put-downs and no insolence to those in authority. The majority of our students do this

naturally and well, however, there have been a few instances lately where some students have received

consequences for inappropriate language and behaviour to others. I urge all students to show respect to

themselves and do the right thing to others.

FROM THE CHAPLAIN

Glorious King!

I have recently been reflecting on the fact that in our consumer-orientated society, there is little that has long-

standing intrinsic value. When things are ‘broken’ we simply throw them away, we ‘get’ a new one. This even

applies in some cases to religions or belief systems. People have developed a consumerist approach to these as

well. If something does not suit us, we shop around to find one that we can better relate to or which has ‘more

relevance’ in our lives. The issue with this is that ‘yesterday, today and forever,’ God is unchanging.

We cannot shape God into the shape that we would like Him to be. God is God. I believe that we have lost much

of the awe and reverence that we should have for God.

I felt this very strongly recently when I was listening to a worship song. These are some of the words:

Glorious King

Seated on the highest place

Giv'n the name above all names

Glorious King, Glorious King

Worthy of the highest praise

Giver of eternal days

Glorious King, Glorious King

We come and bow, We come and bow

We come and bow before our King

Our glorious King

Glorious King

All the nations bow in awe

Every king and priest will fallto their knees

Glorious King

On that day Your truth will reign

We'll sing the glories of Your name

Glorious King, Glorious King

Glorious King – Andy Bromley. Copyright © 2002 Thank You Music

In a world where values are fleeting, God is unchanging. We really need to bow before God in awe and

reverence. As we do that, we begin to know true value, we know our true value, and we begin to know God. We

begin to sense and experience how awesome He is and how great His love is for each and every one of us.

May we all bow in reverence before the God of all creation!

God bless
