BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Born November 6, 1906 in Tucumcari, New Mexico, Alvin
Gerhardt graduated with a mining engineering degree from the University of Arizona in
1933. He had fifty years of experience in different phases of mining, including work as
an engineer, assayer-chemist, mill superintendent, chief engineer for St. Joseph Lead
Company. He moved to Globe, Arizona in 1952 to work as a general superintendent for
Jaquays Asbestos Corporation. After his retirement in 1974, Gerhardt continued
consulting as an engineer-draftsman for City Service Company in Globe until 1981.
Born October 25, 1907 in Lyndonville, Vermont, Hubert “Mike” Wood graduated with a
bachelor’s degree in education from Boston University in the mid-1930s. Teaching until
he became a school principal, Wood then became an insurance agent for Pacific Mutual
Life. Mike moved to Arizona in 1943 for health reasons and relocated to Globe in 1945
where he sold health insurance until his retirement in 1991.
HISTORICAL NOTE: In 1981, Alvin Gerhardt and Mike Wood became co-workers in
an eight-year campaign that attempted to shed light on the asbestos scare that started in
Globe, Arizona and eventually spread across the nation. The situation was triggered when
the Arizona Department of Health, along with then Governor Bruce Babbitt, declared an
area of Globe as “the most health hazardous place in Arizona.” In 1983, this area was
declared a SuperFund site by the Environmental Protection Agency and Federal
Emergency Management Agency. This involved a mobile home subdivision built upon
asbestos tailings from an abandoned mill adjacent to the property. Subsequently, the
residents were relocated and homes demolished.

Wood and Gerhardt found this proclamation shocking and unwarranted. Wood had never
had a claim involving asbestos-related health issues in his over thirty-five years of selling
insurance to asbestos workers in Gila County. With no specific evidence from the State to
back up its claim, they began an asbestos health-effect study to determine whether the
declaration was well founded. The declaration had a devastating effect on Globe’s
economy. Even tourists avoided driving through the town.
This region had mined chrysotile asbestos since 1914. Chrysotile represents 95% of the
asbestos used worldwide. By collecting and analyzing testimonies of former asbestos
workers, they hoped to prove that chrysotile was not a health hazard for Globe or Gila
County. Both men believed that any ill effects from asbestos were caused by imported
crocidolite asbestos or amosite asbestos, both proven health hazards.
They interviewed 145 former workers about the current health of themselves and family
members. They found that no one had reported ill effects from asbestos during their
employment or in their post retirement years. They also gathered a variety of scientific
reports, news articles and publications for and against chrysotile asbestos. They
demonstrated a gradual shift of acceptance by the scientific community and governing
bodies that the policy of “one fiber of asbestos can kill you” was grossly overstated.
Eventually published reports stated that unless someone was continuously breathing in
chrysotile asbestos, the effects had less impact than breathing in second-hand smoke.
Most importantly, through their eight-year campaign, Wood and Gerhardt tried to remove
the fear generated by the word asbestos so that the chrysotile industry could return to Gila
County. In the end, the fear of asbestos never lessened, and U.S. Congress eventually
banned asbestos manufacturing and products, effectively retiring the asbestos industry in
Globe and the nation for good.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE: Documents the attempt by Mike Wood and Alvin
Gerhardt to save the chrysotile industry in Gila County. The collection includes taped
interviews and transcripts from miners as well as field notes, background information and
reports about the inner-workings of an active asbestos mine. It also includes
correspondence from scientists and government officials, periodicals, and news clippings
from various media outlets representing views for and against the hazardous risks of
chrysotile asbestos.
This collection is arranged in seven series, alphabetically and chronologically within.
Original titles of folders used wherever possible.
Series I: Background – purpose of study, history of mining in Arizona, overall study
findings, information on the residential area that was demolished due to the hazardous
health designation.
II: Correspondence– letters, correspondence, notes to Wood and Gerhardt from
scientists and government officials.
III: Research Files– articles, information on asbestos and the asbestos scare and other
hazardous materials; background and field notes on the mine’s functions.
