Our students were very excited again this term to receive their three books from the Books in Homes Catalogue. There were some fantastic titles to choose from including old favourites like ‘Snugglepot and Cuddlepie’. The outstanding favourite for the Middle School and Senior girls was Cathy Freeman’s inspiring book ‘Born to Run’ which tells the story of how she became an Olympic champion. A massive thanks to the Hayden-Reynolds project for supporting the Books in Homes program which enables our students to have access to such valuable reading materials in their homes.

The Athletics Carnival was held this term on Wednesday, 4 June, 2014. It was a fantastic day where both staff and students came together to compete in their house colours with some outstanding efforts from students who did their house proud to get points.

By Middle School Girls

During week eight of this term, Red Dust role models came to Tiwi College for one week. The crew members were Sam the team leader, Brendon the Olympian, Beth the Nutritionist, Chris the musician who ran the music workshops and Dave the cameraman who filmed.

Over the week Beth taught the students about healthy eating, what’s good for your body and what’s bad. Bren-don, who ran in the London Olympics, helped the stu-dents with their running skills for the athletics carnival. Chris worked on a Tiwi College music video and encour-aged us to sing at our best while Dave filmed the stu-dents singing and acting.

The Red Dust role models helped our staff run the field events for our athletics carnival and they even ran in a relay. It was great to have them here at the College working with our students. We hope to see them again one day soon.

The Tiwi College community would like to send our deepest condolences to the Galarla family on the loss of one of our students. She was a quiet young lady who had much to offer. She was loved by many and memories of her we will cherish forever. You are not alone at this sad time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you all.

FGH Mini Fete

I liked the cakes that we baked and the bags of sour straps and

salty plums. I went to other stalls and bought some drinks from

FGH3, lamington balls from FGH6 . It was the most exciting night I

ever had.

The Mini Fete was something new for me. I would like to see more happen in the future.

The thing I liked most about the Fete was see-ing kids enjoy themselves.

I also enjoyed working as a team with my Family Group Home members to run our

Games Stall.

As a result of our newly structured life skills program, the FGH Mini Fete was formed. This term we targeted the ‘head’ which focuses on skills such as planning/organizing, goal setting, problem solving, decision making, criti-cal thinking and record keeping. Having the students run their own stalls perfectly targeted all of these life skills. In week 1 we gave the students the opportunity to decide as a group what ‘special’ item they would like for their FGH and that they could fundraise for. This provided the students with the motivation to get involved and get excited about this new program.

From there the students were divided into two groups, ‘accounting & finance’ and ‘marketing & advertising’. The accounting team was responsible for the budget, creating a shopping list within the budget and designing a price list that would ensure a profit was made. The marketing team had to come up with a name for their stall, design signs and write announcements to advertise their stall.

It was clear all students thoroughly enjoyed the night and the process, which provided a new, fun & exciting way of learning outside the classroom.

I enjoyed selling plant hangers, sweets and helping out. I also enjoyed shooting hoops at the

FGH1 stall.

This term we have been challenged as a Picka Family.

With so many of our community passing away – it has brought feelings and commitments that obviously makes schooling less important. The Tiwi way has al-ways been family first and we hope that we have offered enough support and assistance to our students and our extended Picka Family during these times of mourning. To our community, on behalf of our staff, I would like to say “sorry for your loss” and hope time lends a healing hand.

Unfortunately, some of our staff have had some per-sonal challenges also. Throughout the term we have had staff absent for health reasons. In the past, staff absences have created a strong ripple effect through the school and the students’ behaviour was adversely affected. I’m glad to inform our community that this simply wasn’t the case this term. Team Tiwi stepped up, helped and cared for one another during these testing times and also took on extra roles to ensure the routine for our students who remained. In many ways it reminded me of Hawthorn and Geelong. Their win-ning structures are clearly in place and with players injured – others are able to fulfill a role and maintain their standards. This is simply an indicator of a great team we have at Picka.

When looking at our students, the maintenance of an excellent attendance rate and an improvement in be-haviour this term displayed a sign of the school culture maturing and our students moving to another level of commitment to their studies and programs that we offer. We still have a way to go – but we are definitely on the right path. It’s during these challenging times that the culture of a team is tested and I think this term we passed the test with flying colours.

Term 3 is already looking to be a very exciting one for our students, with the Queensland incentive trip for the Middle School Girls, the Sydney Writing Week for our Senior Girls, the Indigenous Literacy Foundation week, Scotch College exchange for the Middle School Boys, VET Construction week for the Senior Boys, Ath-letics trips and AFL Football opportunities. Time for me to sign up as a mature aged student I think!

I hope that all of our Tiwi College Community has a safe and restful Bush Holiday in country – from Jamurlampi through to Samoa!

We look forward to seeing all of our students back for a wonderful term 3.

Term 2, 2012 From the Assistant Principal


Well, what can I say term two has just been one of those terms. Unbelievably busy, with so much going on in terms of public holidays like Easter, Anzac Day and the Queen’s Birthday, funerals, ceremonies, visitors coming from interstate and overseas, plus there were also a lot of staff out due to illness and Professional Develop-ment. With all of this I am proud to say how lucky I am to be working with supportive and encouraging staff, who are able to step up to the challenges of disruption to the school calendar. These included the following;

Visits to the Jilamara Art Centre by the Senior Boy’s Class, Middle School Classes and the Primary School Class.

Drive Safe NT coming into the school to do the student/staff Provisional Licenses.

Naplan Testing with the Primary/Middle School cohort.

Our first Junior Tiwi Land Council Meeting amongst our Student Representative and the Tiwi Corpo-rates.

Our regular visits from Sister Anne and Kevin Doolan.

The former Aboriginal Affairs Minister Phillip Ruddock came to visit us along with NTOEC working with the Senior Girls.

Our first FGH Fete which was a huge success. The FGH staff and students working together on a busi-ness venture.

We had a Taracumbie Picnic Trip for the school community. A lovely day out for the staff and stu-dents.

CSIRO arrived to the college to work with both the Senior Classes and also did a bit of field work col-lecting data and analysing work samples.

A huge sincere thank you to the Red Dust crew for their Health and Music Program and their assis-tance throughout the week with the Reading Program and during the Athletics Carnival. I appreciate everything that they did in making my job easier throughout the week.

The Athletics Carnival was another fantastic day where both staff and students enjoyed the day with an awesome effort by students to participate in the events for the day. Congratulations to the Age Champions and to Red House as our House Winners for 2014. A tremendous effort by Mr Neil, Mark, Bocko and the Senior Boys for marking out the field and to the Red Dust Crew for their assistance throughout the day/week.

The Girls Footy Grand Final win making it three years straight for Tiwi College as the Tiwi Islands Women’s Community Football Champions in 2014. Well done to the girls and to Ms Tash as the ‘Never say Die Coach’ who consistently trains the girls throughout the semester and has enforced a code of discipline amongst the girls to train hard, play hard, understand the concept of Respect towards oth-ers and look after themselves both on and off the field.

It certainly has been one busy term and yet again, I owe it to the Picka Community for stepping in at various times throughout the semester to assist me in making my job easi-er to do what I can, to look after our Picka Community. I thank you all for yet another semester, for being there when it counted. To be here for the common goal of helping our students, to guide them, to support them, to listen to them, to also discipline them, but to tolerate them, to respect them and lastly to be here for them.

Primary School


This term we have been very busy. In between holidays, funerals and excursions the primary school students have been studying poetry, spelling, reading, patterns, shapes and graphing. They have learnt about the planets, created a class timeline and learnt skills used in a circus.

Some of the highlights of the term have included class trips to Milikapiti Art Centre, an athletics carnival and our class sleepover.

Last week the primary school went to Milikapiti art and crafts. Us primary school kids painted on bark. We saw Pedro Wo-

naeamirri but before all that happened we went out bush a little bit and looked at the special tree where the special bark came

from. I painted a beach and a turtle.

We also had our Athletics carnival. We had races, field events like shot-put, discus, long jump and high jump. I ran in the relay. Red

house won the Athletics Carnival.

Last week we learnt about planets, Earth

and the Sun. We also learnt about the

moon. The Earth has one moon but some

planets have 20 or more. We have 8 plan-

ets and 1 dwarf planet called Pluto, to-

gether that’s 9. We get day and night from

the sun and the moon. The earth spins

round and round, it rotates every day and

it orbits the sun every year.

Term 2, 2012 Middle School Young Women


Middle School Young Women have been working hard this term learning about persuasive writing and the relationship between decimal, percentages and fractions. The girls have continued working on their history projects including the Lake Mungo discoveries and their first speech on ‘Should racism be in sport?’

We have had the opportunity to work with Jilamara Art Centre in Milikapiti, where the girls learnt from local artists about their culture. We saw the return of Red Dust role models who taught the girls how to record music and worked with the girls in their PE lesson. We also had a visit from politician Philip Ruddock and his wife.

In the later part of the term we saw Gladys return to work after a long battle with illness. The girls were very excited to see her back in the classroom and it has been great seeing Gladys back mentoring these young women.

Gladys and Melina look forward to the return of all our girls for some exciting activities in term three.

Numeracy

This term we’ve been learning about decimals, fractions, percentages, and

timetables. We have been adding simple fractions and doing place val-ue, two digit multiplication and im-

proper and mixed fractions. We also played maths games using the mini

white boards, and computer work us-ing the program Mathletics where we

can play math’s games against the Middle School Boys class.

Literacy

During the term we have been learning about persuasive writing techniques. Our class made post-ers for our teachers. We had to try

and persuade them to buy our products. In class we have been

looking at the topic ‘should racism be in sport?’ where we each wrote

a speech and then presented them to our class, house parents

and teachers.

History

In history we have been learning about dinosaurs, mega fauna, dreamtime

and the first Australians. I learnt about dinosaurs, what they ate and how

they became extinct. They ate lizards, eggs or mam-mals and plants. We also

studied a place called Lake Mungo. They found Mungo

Lady, Mungo Man and footprints. Mungo Lady

and Mungo Man are per-haps the most important

human remains ever found in Australia.

Science

This term in science with Miss Anne we have been learning about

The Rock Cycle and the three different types of rocks (Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary). We also watched short video clips on The Rock Cycle. We have been learning about tectonic plates and earthquakes and how it affects the earth and people. We have been looking at how the moon affects

the earth and its tides. We’ve been working on volcanoes as well as

seeing how scientists study volca-noes. In homework we have learnt

about gravity. Sir Isaac Newton thought of the idea by seeing and

apple fall from a tree.

Middle School Young Men


By Middle School Boys

This term in the Middle School Classroom we have had lots of fun learning new and exciting things. Our favour-ite thing this term has been enjoying a swim at the Pickataramoor Creek, after long days of hard school work.

In Literacy this term we have been learning about racism and how to express our views through argumentative writing. We read an article in the NT News about Cosmos Munkara and how he was racially abused when play-ing football in country Victoria. After reading the article we did a brainstorm on, ‘why racism should be stamped out of sport’. From our brainstorm we chose three arguments to use in an essay. We used the three arguments to create three paragraphs and added an introduction and conclusion to finish the essay.

In Numeracy we have learnt about fractions. We now know that the numerator is the top element of a fraction and the denominator is the bottom. We also learnt that when the denominator is the same on two fractions we can add and subtract them. We have also been working hard to learn our times tables and use this knowledge for division.

In Science we have been learning about rocks and the different rock forms. We have learnt about sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks. We are also planning on making model volcanoes to simulate a volcanic erup-tion.

In History we have continued on from term one, learning about Ancient Egypt. This term our focus has been on the Egyptian Gods. The ancient Egyptians had lots of different Gods, who they believed in for different things.

Thanks to our teachers Josh, Aussie, Neil, Steve and Sila for teaching us this term. We appreciate your hard work and hope you have a great bush holiday.

Term 2, 2012 Senior Young Women


This term the Senior Young Women knuckled down and worked hard both in and out of the classroom to complete assignments and have many glorious wins in sporting competitions. Well done to all of you again on that winning teamwork in the 9 a side footy comp! Once again you put on an amazing show of talent and skill.

It is not just the sports arena though that the girls should be congratulated on. Both Tictac and I are incredibly proud of everything the girls achieved academically over the term. This term marks the first time that some of their NTOEC subjects have been completed in the allocated timeframe of one semester. Well done Senior Young Women you are continuously pushing yourselves and breaking new ground and it is not going unnoticed. Make sure you give yourself and each other a well deserved pat on the back, you can be proud of everything you have achieved this term and enjoy a well deserved holiday break.

Tictac and I wish you all a happy and safe bush holiday. Collect all those stories you love to tell and we love to hear, and we will see you back in term three for another rewarding term and who can forget… another book writing expedition in Sydney!

English - Jessie

This term we have been reading and watching the film of Whale Rider. We had to write dialogue and journal articles that were based on the film. Our last assignment was an oral that we presented to the class on a career of our choice. Dur-ing the week we also get new spelling words and play games.

Maths - Ella and Shania

Each day in maths we do mental maths, speed and accuracy and problem solving. This term the year 11/12s have been working on Numeracy for Construction learning geometry, volume, area and perimeter. In Year 10 we have been learn-ing about money and after we finish our money tasks we play a little maths game.

Geography - Kimberley

In geography this term we have been learning about all the different countries and playing a quiz to learn as many as we can. We learnt about maps and how to read them and find different locations using latitude and longitude.

Child Studies - Juliette

This term we have been working with the kids. We played games with the kids putting red stickers on bad things and green stickers on good things and then we took photos. We then used these photos to make posters and powerpoint presentations on child safety.

Reading Group - Dellarosa

This term we finished our book Riding the Black Cockatoo by John Danalis. It had lovely parts when John and his dad re-turned the skull that had been sitting in their house back to the land of the Wamba Wamba country. He met some people and elders from the Murray River. Next term we start our new book.

Senior Young Men


Term two was an exciting term on a number of fronts for the senior boys’ class; we kicked off the term with a number of new students joining the senior boys’ cohort from both the mainland and the Tiwi Islands. These boys assimilated well into our new program adding a new enthusiasm to the class.

The practical component of the SEDA program began in week 3 of the term, where the boys started their work experience component. Each Thursday the class split into groups and officiated in the Healthy Lifestyles Cup Women’s football competition for the woman of Tiwi Islands. Alongside the local sport and recreation officers the boys helped to coach and umpire the teams and games in the competition, this culminated with a number of boys officiating in the Grand final match.

Senior Young Men VET

Another busy term for the Senior Boys in VET (Vocational Education and Training). The pergola at the Art room has now been completed, providing much needed shade for students to work outside and enjoy the fresh breeze. The boys did a fantastic job and are now, with the help of Mr Neil, planning for the next project down at Picka Creek.

Working at heights

During Week five CDU trainer Brad Shepard came in for his third week of training for Certificate II Construction Pathways. The boys learnt how to work safely at heights using harnesses, hard-hats and correct tech-niques for using a ladder. A valuable lesson and one that will hopefully help keep them safe when they move into the workplace.

Fire Awareness Course

Three of our students were invited to attend a Fire Awareness Course at Yapalika, Forestry in the last week of May. The three boys represented the College well, displaying a mature and enthusiastic attitude through-out the day. They sat in with adult Forestry workers who were also taking the course and learnt the theory and practical aspects of working safely with fire. The plan is for some of our students to follow this up with a block of work experience in the near future.

Workshop

In the workshop the boys have been extending their skill set to include operating power saws and other var-ious power tools. The accuracy and quality of their work is improving rapidly.

Term 2, 2012 Hayden Reynolds Garden


Term two has been a great period for the garden and

we have seen a lot of changes. We saw Jason leave for

university in Sydney for the remainder of the year and

his replacement Ryan Bockman begin. With the excel-

lent wet season we have had this year we have seen

the garden thrive with large amounts of fruit and vege-

tables being distributed to the family group homes.

This term the garden has seen quite a few visitors. Just

recently we had two Macquarie IT technicians come to

Picka to sort out the computer network issues. The

week was filled with different activities including a trip

to the Art Centre for a day, a fishing trip down at

Goose Creek before an afternoon swimming at Tara-

cumbi falls.

The chooks have been a bit of a talking point this term

to say the least, with high demand we have decided to

increase the amount of chooks to hopefully keep eve-

ryone happy. They are a major part of our garden set-

up and never go to waste.

Earlier this term we had the Senior Boys VET class as-

sist us in the marking out of the athletics track. Despite

a bit of stray paint the track was excellent, a credit to

them all!

We are now looking forward to term three as we have

just planted a large amount of vegetables including;

tomatoes, lettuce, bok choi, capsicum and many more.

Have a safe bush holidays and we look forward to see-

ing everyone after the break.

The Garden Crew

I like to go to Jilamara because I like painting on bark. I liked the museum, espe-

cially seeing Pedro Wonaeamerri’s paintings. I got to meet Pedro Wonaeam-

erri and he was really nice.

Matty Larkin

On Wednesday in week 7 and 8 we went to the Jilamara Art Centre,

Milikapiti to learn about our Tiwi cul-ture. We had our faces painted by the artists, we danced our cultural dances, made head bans and explored the mu-

seum and Tiwi art. We worked with some of the Tiwi artists including Ped-

ro Wonaeamirri, Maureen Brooks, Aileen Puruntatameri, Patrick Freddy

Puruntatameri and Glen Farmer.

The second time when we went to Milikapiti we went out bush to collect some bark from the trees. We learnt how to get the bark from the trees

which we took back to Tiwi College so we could paint our own Tiwi designs.

I like to go to Jilamara because I like painting bark and I like to look at all the artists painting. I

liked seeing how they made the bark for painting and I like culture dancing. I got painted

up for dancing by Freda’s grandma and Jas-mine’s mum.

AFLNT School of Excellence


With the Michael Long Academy opening next year in Darwin, remote kids will have the best opportunity ever to follow a football pathway all the way to the AFL. With this in mind, term two has seen increased fitness amongst the boys and there has been a steady improvement in the way

they have approached football training. As a reward for their efforts 20 of our students recently travelled into Darwin for the end of semester football trip.

Staying at Kormilda College some of our students felt right at home. But we didn’t spend much time there, going to the movies, the wave pool, the cus-tomary shopping trip to Casuarina, and the highlight of the trip which was the day spent at Wongai Falls in Litchfield National Park. Most of the lads braved the cold water and mixed with the tourists and I think Emilio and Maurice have new grandmothers. Even more impressive was that the whole group completed the 2km walk around and over the top of the falls, ex-cept for Kingy who was still recovering from his morning tea of chicken & chips.

We also had a bit of a footy match against Kormilda who split their kids into two teams. Tiwi College comfortably defeated the first team but disillusioned by not playing a normal match, as well as a bit of fatigue, saw the second Kormilda team turn the tables. Most importantly, the games were played in good spirit and we are looking forward to possibly hosting Kormilda later this year.

In other football news some of our Tiwi College students had the opportunity to play at representative level. Lincoln Pupangamirri and Frazer Tipungwuti were both in the best three players in the u14 remote team that defeated the u14 Darwin team and Curtis Tipiloura made the squad of 30 for the NT Thun-der 16 & under state side. Now with semester one over, the bush holidays are a great time to recharge the batteries and come back fresh for semester two when we will be going on an interstate excursion for our reward trip.

Term 2, 2012 Growing Young Women’s Program


This term the GYW Academy was the biggest for the

year so far with the Tiwi Islands women’s 9 a side com-

petition.

The consistent and full numbers at training was fantas-

tic and the most dedicated we have had so far this

year. The hard work put in at training reflected the

season, as we faced only one loss on our road to the

Grand Final.

On Thursday, 5 June, 2014 the Grand Final Day was

held over at Wurrumiyanga against Xavier College. The

whole school travelled over to watch the girls aim for a

third consecutive premiership. It was also a great turn-

out by the Xavier College supporters, so it set the stage

for a great contest.

First quarter saw a fiercely even competition between

the two teams, ending with close scores. In the second

quarter, Xavier pulled out some easier turnovers and

goals, however the girls still held their own with great

teamwork, sitting ahead at half time.

The premiership third quarter was just that – a confi-

dently strong effort by all of the girls with some bril-

liant speed by Kimberley Cunningham along the wing

into our forward line. Under penetrating pressure, our

very experienced backline was fantastic in defence.

Our last quarter demonstrated everything we had

worked towards in our training sessions with fitness

and discipline and with some brilliance by Jess Stassi

and Sherayn, Tiwi College stamped their dominance

this season once again, coming away with the three

peat premiership!

A big thank you must go out to Tictac and Tippa for

standing in to train the girls when I was away and to all

those who helped with driving and umpiring. We are

lucky to have such a supportive community here at Tiwi

College!

The circus was a huge success with loads of activities including; juggling, skipping, magic tricks and hula hoops. What is your nickname? Shoota.

Where are you originally from? Adelaide, South Aus-tralia.

What is your job here at Tiwi College? Principal & husband (second one is much easier!).

Why did you decide to work at Tiwi College? I love the Tiwi people, it was the right time with Ashby wanting to go to boarding school…and it was a bit of a sad time at the College and I could hear the hurt in Clancy’s voice… so I wanted to try to help in some way.

What do you like about Tiwi Islands? The Tiwi people.

When did you start going bald? I was about 35 – 40 years old.

What colour was your hair when you were younger? Really blonde hair – almost white!

Tell us the story when you first laid eyes on Annie Well… I spoke to her at a sports game and liked the way she talked – really peaceful. I liked the whole package! She lived with my best mate so I kept on coming up with excuses to come over so I could keep bumping into her. Then at school (we both taught at the same school) I had a year 8 science class just at the time Annie was walking over to the pottery room to check the kilns… so I came into the class grumpy, made the kids a bit frightened and made them do heaps of writing. With the class quiet I sat at the back of the class and watched Annie walk back and forth, it was the favourite part of my week! Just watching her made me feel good and at peace. After doing this for a while I got my mate to put in a good word for me and I asked her out.

Where was your first date with Annie? The Rende-vous Restaurant, 34 Langtree Avenue, Mildura!

How old were you when you had Ashby and Rehn? Ashby 28, Rehn 31.

What was your favorite movie when you were a kid? True Grit.

Why do you love the Hawks? I had a couple of really good mates from Adelaide go over and play for them. I always made sure I watched the Hawks on TV and looked out for them… and I got hooked.

Who is your favorite player and why? Paul Puopolo – he simply gives 100% effort for 100% of the game. I love watching him chase down and tackle players who are bigger and stronger than him. It shows that you can be a very basic type of player – but if you work really hard at being the best of what you do – you can live the dream!

What’s the weirdest thing you have ever eaten? Soap – after my Mum heard me swear!

On Saturday, 14 June, nine Scotch College boys, along with two staff and an old Scotch boy arrived at Tiwi Col-lege for a cultural exchange with the Tiwi College Middle School Boys. They started their visit with a swim at Taracumbi Falls followed by a game of touch footy with the Tiwi College staff in the afternoon. While at Tiwi College they spent a day fishing and talking about Tiwi culture with Tiwi cultural men JR Pilakui and Greg Orsto at Jessie River. Over the course of their week long stay, they did different things with the Middle School Boys and the two cultural men. The Middle School Boys look forward to their up coming trip to Scotch College next term in August.

As semester one is about to come to pass; I take this time once more to acknowledge the traditional owners of the Tiwi Islands both past and present. I also acknowledge all parents of our Tiwi College boarding students. Entrusting your children into our care has been an honourable and humbling experience. I sin-cerely thank you all.

Most of our FGHs are filled to capacity. Girls continue to come in good and consistent number. Boys on the other hand tend to be irregular in attendance with a few consistent ones. It is my joy to announce that there have been marked general improvements in are-as of behaviour and attitude this term.

Longer staff retention plays an important part in our relational roles as FGH parents. We will continue to en-courage each other to stay longer for the purpose of getting to know our students better and we’ll continue to attempt to connect with parents.

We have been aspiring to maintain good and healthy working relationships. Our heart to heart session during the term continued to keep us on track and have been simple and confidential. We endeavour to share first hand information on what is going on in the lives of our students and we try to keep each other well informed.

We have confirmed information from parents Meaghan and Pisa *FGH 1+, Nadine and Dunstan *FGH 4+ and Sheree and Mohu *FGH 6+ that each family would be welcoming the birth of their bundle of joy from next term and on to the fourth term of this year. All have applied for their maternity leave and will be absent from their services to our students when their time is due respectively. Important to announce here is the fact that stu-dents are observing husband and wife relationship and how children are raised by their own FGH parents.

Mr Kameli Ravula and his wife Titilia have arrived to replace their son Pisa and wife Meaghan as they go on ma-ternity/paternity leave. The senior Ravulas are our next FGH parents for the new boarding house awaiting opening. They will help us provide the much-needed replacements to the families who are going on leave as cited above. On a voluntary basis, both are present well before their starting date on 14 June, 2014 to familiar-ise themselves with how to run a FGH and to get to know the students better.

May we all have a joyful and much needed break with our loved ones. I pray that our Lord continues to shower us all with his bless-ings.

Family Group Home Co-ordinator’s Report

Family Group Homes


Term two has been another great term in FGH 1. We

had higher numbers and more regular attendances

with the students in our house this term, which is ex-

cellent to see!

We have continued on with our general house rules

and house duties throughout the term, and it has been

encouraging to see the Senior Young Men within our

care, rising up and taking more initiative within these

areas. We have also continued sharing our favorite part

of the day around the dinner table every night, which

we feel is a great way to bring us all together at the

end of a day, and it also encourages positive thinking

and confidence building.

Our highlight of the term has been the new life skills

program that was put together by the new Life skills

committee. From the start of the term, we worked with

the students in our house to put together a stall for a

Mini Fete that we ran in week 6. The goal was set out

from week 1 and it was to raise money to buy some

extra things the students would like for our house. We

were allocated the ‘Games Stall’, and for the six weeks

in the lead up to the Fete, we all worked towards our

group goal, with the students learning new skills and

gaining new confidences to step out of their comfort

zones. It was really encouraging to see all our students

getting involved and we were so proud of them for all

they achieved and accomplished in the lead up and on

the night of the Mini Fete! It was a great success!

We have a new member of our family due in July and

we will be returning from leave with our new little ba-

by bundle in week 5 of next term. Until then, we are

leaving our Family Group Home in the capable hands of

Pisa’s parents, Kameli and Titilia Ravula.

We are looking forward to returning to another chal-

lenging and exciting semester two of 2014.

Term two was an interesting term for FGH 3. We had

some old boys move back and others return as well as

welcoming new ones. The new students fitted in well

and the old ones picked up from when they left. In hav-

ing a mixture of senior and middle school students, the

dynamics are quite different but are very exciting.

As much as the older ones love to just chill and watch

television, the younger ones love to go out and try

hunting wild animals. On one of our trips, we caught a

possum and a wallaby which the boys cooked over the

fire and Akanisi had her first taste of wallaby meat. The

boys are more used to the routines and structures and

it’s always good seeing them participating during footy

training and having a swim at the creek which they re-

ally love. We celebrated a lot of birthdays but the high-

light was celebrating Akanisi’s 65th which was a sur-

prise party. Thanks to Liti, Sai and the boys for organiz-

ing a cake.

We started with the new FGH Life skills program in tar-

geting the students’ holistic life. The boys had to re-

search and come up with ideas of what they want in

the house. They had to get prices of products and work

out money to raise during a fete that was organized.

The students participated so well in selling, organising

drinks and handling money.

We’ve also had Liti come in to help out at times and

the boys respond well to her. We have had a busy, ex-

citing term and we’re pleased with the boys’ attend-

ance throughout the whole term.

We hope the boys have a fun filled and safe bush holi-

days and look forward to hearing stories from them

when we see them next term.

This term we have had a smaller number of girls due to personal and cer-

emonial commitments. We have enjoyed seeing the commitment from the

girls who have been able to come and watch the way they have been dedi-

cated to achieving well in both the academic and sporting areas of school

life. We are very proud of our girls and their achievements and hope they

feel proud of themselves too. We hope the bush holidays is a time of fun

and relaxation for all and you enjoy the time with your children. Looking

forward to seeing you all back next term.

What did you enjoy about the mini fete?

People coming to our stall to buy the salty plum and sour strap bags.

What was your favourite thing to do?

Changing money for people when they bought things from our stall.

What were some ways you girls helped prepare for the mini fete?

Baking muffins and rainbow cookies. We made signs, sewed aprons and

made price tags and made announcements at assembly.

What are you looking forward to for next term’s mini fete?

Making more money to buy new speakers.

This term in FGH4 it has been a hard term be-

cause we had footy going on and there’s not

many girls turning up to school because family

have passed away. There are a lot of students

not coming back to school. In FGH4 we get up

in the morning for breakfast and have our cere-

al. Some of us like to save our juice in the freez-

er so when we finish school our ice cups are

ready.

Term 2 Life skills report: By Dellarosa Puruntatameri

In life skills we did cooking, baking and sewing. Most of the semester we

clean our rooms. We also had a mini fete we had to get ready for three/

four weeks earlier. The goal our house set and is looking forward to buying

is speakers. The favourite part of life skills is cleaning our rooms and

make sure we have it neat for visitors when they come to visit.



We would like to share with you some of the highlights of term two. At the beginning of the term we had 10 boys altogether. During the term a few of our boys said goodbye as they moved up to FGH 3, however this made way for two new boys who came and joined us in week 6 and 7. Overall the term went smoothly and our boys have all done very well. A key highlight was the school mini Fete held in week 6. Over the term life skills has been devoted to organising and preparing for the fete. The boys worked really hard and well togeth-er to run the sausage sizzle store, making a nice little sum of money which will go towards a purchase of their choice for the home. Well done to all the boys for their work and effort to make this a success.

There were a few times during the term when things got a bit tough and challenging for us as house parents but as we look back we have seen some big positive changes in a few of the boys and we are look-ing forward to these positive changes continuing into next term.

We wish everyone a very safe and happy bush holiday. We pray that God will continue to lead, guide and protect students during this hol-iday break, and that staff are safe during their travels whilst having a good rest.

Another busy and exciting term for FGH 6! Our home is bursting at the seams with 14 girls again this term. It’s fantastic to see the girls returning term after term, week after week.

For our new life skills program this term, the girls ran a stall at our FGH mini fete selling sweets and cakes. FGH 6 set out to make enough profit to purchase some new outdoor furniture and hammocks. They all did a great job on this and hopefully we can do even better at the next one!

The girls have also been busy with their football program this term. All their hard work paid off and they walked away with a grand final win for the third year in a row. We are so proud of all our girls with the effort & hard work they have been putting into their sporting commitments.

We wish all our girls and their families a fun, safe and relaxing break. We hope to see you all back after the holidays ready for term 3!

Jennifer and Clancy celebrated their 20th Wedding Anniver-sary at Pickataramoor Creek on Wednesday, 18 June, 2014 by renewing their vows at the end of semester Tiwi College Mass in front of students, staff and family.

Clancy spoke about how they first met in 1988 at Wurrumi-yanga when he saw her walking across the oval, it was like watching a movie in slow motion and was love at first sight. He also said that was when Jennifer reckons the nightmare began!

They spoke about how their marriage has had its ups and downs with a few fights thrown in, especially when Essendon played the Cats. However, the trick to staying together was commitment to each other and getting through the rough times by sticking together and enjoying the many good times that marriage can bring. Clancy also said that somewhere there is a tree at Wurrumiyanga with the words 'Brian, Jen-nifer Clancy, Only True Love, Please Don't be jealous in the year 1988, so lay off suckers'! Clancy was last spotted looking for a Picka tree to update the message to 2014!

Both Jennifer and Clancy would like to thank the whole Picka-taramoor Family for putting on a wonderful celebration.
