THE BEST DAYDear Friends of TeamMates:

Looking back over the 2009-2010 school year, it has been a tremendous year for TeamMates in many ways. TeamMates experienced its largest growth by adding 700 new matches program-wide. Team-Mates is serving more youth than ever before with a total of 4,300 youth in 120 communities across Nebraska, Iowa and our newly established chapter in San Di-ego, California. The mentor screening process has been centralized and a new software has been implemented to combine the application and database systems. These changes will improve the overall quality control of the program as well as move mentors through the sys-tem more efficiently. We continue to move toward our vision of serving 10,000 youth by 2015 and be the leading school based mentoring program in the nation. Without the tireless work of an outstand-ing staff and the support of our donors, mentors, mentees and their families we know none of this would be possible. Thank you for putting the TEAM inTeamMates!

TEAMMATES MENTORING PROGRAM TeamMates is a school based, one-to-one mentoring program founded by Tom and Nancy Osborne in 1991 in an effort to provide support and encouragement to youth. The goal of the program is to see youth graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education. To reach this goal, commu-nity members volunteer one hour per week within their local school. These caring adults from the community serve as positive role models who give youth a sense of hope, purpose and vision.

THE BEST DAY DUO Dominick and the mentor he speaksso highly of at left, Mr. Ed Akins, make one great team!

COACHES CHALLENGE 2009 Over 5,000 mentors were recruited during the Coaches Challenge, a partnership between Team-Mates and Kansas Mentors. The friendly challenge between Kan-sas State head coach, Bill Snyder, and Nebraska Athletic Director, Tom Osborne, is designed to raise awareness of the need for more mentors. The winning team was announced at the Nebraska ver-sus Kansas State football game with Kansas Mentors taking the tro-phy for recruiting the most mentors.

ABOVE TeamMates co-founder, Nancy Osborne, passesthe winner’s trophy to Ella Todd, Director of Kansas Mentors.

TEAMMATES FOUNDATION The TeamMates Foun-dation was established to provide support to the mission of the TeamMates Mentoring Program. En-dowment funds and other long-term investments will help sustain the program into the future and provide a cost-effective investment tool for local chapters. The TeamMates Foundation is a separate 501 c 3 organization.

OSBORNE LEGACY ENDOWMENT INITIATIVE Over the last twenty years, Tom and Nancy Osborne have worked tirelessly toward the dream of increasing opportunities for youth in our region. What began nearly twenty years ago as the mission of two car-ing people has grown into a movement to secure the future dreams of youth. What began as their gift is now our opportunity to secure the future of TeamMates.

The Osborne Legacy Campaign was designed to secure that legacy. TeamMates will seek major cash gifts and gift expectancies of over $12 mil-lion designed to ensure program sustainability well into the future. Income from endowment funds will help bridge the growing gap between what can be raised through annual fundraising initiatives and the increase in program costs.

We sincerely appreciate those individuals who have stepped forward to pledge their support to this im-portant initiative with gifts and pledges totaling near-ly $400,000. The following individuals have pledged their support to the Osborne Legacy in 2009: Mr. and Mrs. Kim Baxter Ms. Kathryn Burney Dr. and Mrs. Dick Davis Mr. Jeffrey Gray Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Knox Ms. Michelle Manning Mr. Steve Martin and Dr. Amy Haddad Mr. and Mrs. Ben Muraskin H.H. “Red” and Ruth Nelson Foundation Mr. Thomas O’Brien Dr. and Mrs. Tom Osborne Dr. and Mrs. Jim Pillen Mr. Jerry Reed Ms. Kim Robak Mr. and Mrs. John Schuele

LEGACY SOCIETY The Legacy Society recognizes those generous individuals who have remembered TeamMates in their will and estate plans. Gifts to the Legacy Society can be made in support of an individual TeamMates Chapter, to the overall TeamMates Program or to the TeamMates Foun-dation.

Estate gifts often represent some of the most sig-nificant gifts to TeamMates Mentoring Program. Membership in the Legacy Society allows us to rec-ognize and appropriately thank these generous donors while they are still with us.

The following individuals are the founding Legacy Society Members: Art and Earlene Knox Tom and Janet Miller John and Michele Northrop Dr. Tom and Nancy Osborne John and Mary Schuele Denny and Diana Walker

LAMBDA CHI ALPHA The Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has chosen TeamMates Mentoring Program as a focus for fun and fundraising! In November of 2009, members of the fraternity ran a football from the University of Nebraska football stadium in Lincoln to the University of Kansas stadium in Lawrence, Kansas. They were hosted by various TeamMates programs along the route and raised more than $4,100 for the Lincoln TeamMates program. The football run has become an annual event for the fraternity and TeamMates is a proud partner!

GALLUP AND TEAMMATES PARTNER FOR STRENGTHSThe TeamMates Mentoring Program is partnering with the Gallup Organization’s Clifton Strengths Institute to assess the strengths of mentors and mentees. A strengths pilot with nine chapters in Nebraska and Iowa has been launched. After the initial strengths assessment, mentoring pairs will par-ticipate in weekly strengths focused activities. This longitudi-nal study is based upon the premise that successful people understand their talents and build their life upon them. AT LEFT Shane Lopez, Research Director for the Clifton Strengths School, presents to local program leaders at the TeamMates annual partnership meeting on the links be-tween hope, strengths development, academic success, and overall wellbeing.

THE NEBRASKA ARTS COUNCIL TeamMates is entering their seventh year of collaboration with the Nebraska Arts Council. Nebraska youth and their TeamMates mentors have opportuni-ties for hands-on, collaborative exploration into a variety of arts oriented activities including digital photography and filmmaking, in workshops sponsored by TeamMates, the Nebraska Arts Council and Nebraska Cultural Endowment. The workshops encourage teams to con-tinue collaborative creative work in their one-to-one mentoring sessions and are designed to help youth gain valuable skills in technology, communication and decision making through new media, a prevalent voice of their generation. TeamMates is one of many organizations selected for a 2010--2011 statewide arts education initiative grant through the Nebraska Arts Council and Nebraska Cultural Endowment.

BELOW RIGHT Depicting his love of both football and the arts, TeamMates Mentee DeAnthus illustrates how his strengths complement each other.

THE ONE HOUR DIFFERENCE In a world that thrives on complexity, that champions quick answers and immediate solutions; it’s reassur-ing to discover that direct, honest, simple and consistent efforts can yield profound and lasting effects.

One hour, once a week. Enough time to share a lunch, to sit and talk, or to play a game of cards. Enough time, over time, to change two lives–your’s and a child’s.

In schools, which are structured for the needs of many, TeamMates reaches out to the individu-al. Creating a time and place for a student to say...this is what I think...this is what I believe...this is what I fear...this is what I dream. Time for an adult to say...have you thought about...did you know...you can be...I believe in you.

Time enough for a young person to find his or her way. Time enough for an adult to discover the rich rewards of a simple commitment. One hour...time enough.

“I learned to believe in myself because my mentor does.” —TeamMates Mentee
