Hi from Nat’l. Chevy, I hope all is well with everyone. Everyone here at NCA is well, except maybe Eddie who is expecting his first child any day now. There have been a couple false alarms and it appears things are wearing him out a little. We are keeping busy here, trying to get the shelves filled up a little more. I sure wish some of our suppliers weren’t out of so many items. It makes it difficult for us to fill orders when we know our customers need the parts. It seems like suppliers are stocking less these days. Hopefully that will change soon! Repair work has started on our roof and other parts of the building that were damaged by the tree falling on it and we can look forward to getting rid of our leak buckets soon. It has been so hot and humid here that you can barely step out of the door much less get any work done outside. I usually love to get on my lawn mower and cut grass, but being out in the heat and sun for 3-4 hours is too much. Last week I cut some each day for three days in a row, which seemed to help, but it’s nicer to have it done all at one time so you can take it off the list. Be sure to check out the new items in the newsletter. Some great stuff available and I just received word that the ‘53/54 trunk floor will be available very soon. So if you’re in the market, let us know in about three weeks. Please make sure you’re renewal is done before the end of this month or your newsletter will not arrive any more. It’s simple - $25.00 or an $85.00 minimum order to continue your membership. Thanks to those of you who have already renewed; we’re glad to have you back! ‘Til next time…….. “keep kool”

Cover Car & Tech Help - A Power Steering Option

My recently-restored 1954 BelAir Convertible looked great but steered like a tank in spite of having all new steering components, tires and two computer alignments. As I wanted to both drive and show the car, I had to do the best I could with original equipment, so I decided the answer to my steering woes just might be installing a power steering unit. Easier thought of than accomplished. I had no idea of all of the different parts needed to make the switch. Obviously I had to obtain the power steering box and pump, which I found in “Parts-Line.” The seller knew more than I did and sent me what parts he had along with a printout from Authentic Automotive that lists most everything needed for such a swap. It also contains interesting engine stamping and plant information. That list and a numbered parts picture pertaining to my particular application, a 1954 Powerglide, follows:

1953-54 CHEVY POWER STEERING PARTS

Parts that are unique to power steering, or are different than standard steering counterparts:

Cover Car & Tech Help - A Power Steering Option

My first step was to send the steering box and pump unit to a professional rebuilder. I restored the idler arm and made that switch along with exchanging the driver’s side motor mount. With all components on hand and the box and pump returned, I removed the standard steering column, levers, brackets, wiring and replaced all with their power steering counterparts. Adjustments to levers affecting proper operation of the neutral safety switch, back-

up lights, shift indicator and transmission were completed and with a little fine tuning the car was back on the road. The results were beyond my fondest expectations and well worth the effort and expense. Thanks to National Chevy and “Parts-Line” for providing me with all parts and contacts for this most rewarding project.

George KingBangor, PA

FOR 1953 ONLYEngine stamping prefix designates power steering option. For example, “LAE” prefix denotes a 235 six with 3 speed and power steering built at the Flint engine plant, while the prefix “LAR” denotes a 235 six with 3 speed and power steering built at the Tonawanda engine plant. The prefix “LAS” denotes a 235 six with Powerglide and power steering built at the Tonawanda. There were no 235 sixes with Powerglide and power steering built at the Flint plant.

In 1954, the engine stamping system was changed completely,, and did not reflect the power steering option.

I am a fairly new member to the NCA, and the early 50’s Chevy community, and wanted to say thanks for the great service I have received each time I have called to order a part. I have owned several two seater street rods in the past, but as our family grew with two boys and their friends, a bigger car was in order, so the purchase of our 1952 Chevy met our needs. I have enjoyed reading the “Parts-Line” and have learned a tremendous amount by reading the articles and looking at the great pictures. The pictures that I have included are of my wife and me at the Road Rocket Rumble in Indianapolis. It is a rockabilly-type show and my wife, Tiffany, fit right in with her pin-up style outfit. We had a great time traveling to Indy in the car, driving Highway 40, the Old National Road, packing the trunk, looking at the map, and staying away from all the electronic gadgets for the weekend.

I have also included pictures from a day when we took my youngest son, Cole, and his two friends, Kayla and Emma, to the root beer stand in Robinson, Illinois for lunch. As you can see, they had too much root beer and slept the entire way home. Finally, the last picture is the whole crew with my oldest son, Matt, enjoying a snow cone on the square in Sullivan, Indiana during our car club’s Wednesday night cruise-in on the square. Matt has played a vital role in getting the car road-worthy as he helped me convert the car to 12 volts and made the alternator bracket to replace the generator. We have only owned this car for about a year, but it has provided us with loads of fun. I look forward to continuously making improvements and taking more trips in the future. Thanks again for all you do, Tony & Tiffany MiglioriniSulivan, IN
