dear Readers,

We pride ourselves on being a pretty stoic lot. We’ve planned, written, and brought out each issue like we were going to war.

this week, when planning the mother’s day issue, halfway through the meeting, everyone got up to call their moms.

there’s something about that special woman in your life that tugs the heartstrings the way nothing else can.

this week, we want to make it less about ourselves, but about the love and sacrifice our mothers put into our lives.

from our school lives to our home lives and everything in between, this issue is a celebration of moms.

tmAG wishes its readers a happy mother’s day

TMAG’s Room of the week!

Qutubuddin Kapadia

What is the first thing that you say when you get frightened? Most of us scream for our moms. It’s our first instinct. We take many things for granted, sadly, our mothers and their efforts as well. We all complain about how they are always so protective but seldom do we appreciate how we have someone who is there for us always. For this Mother’s Day, TMAG gives you a few easy and sweet gift ideas, to show your mother that you care

amazing option. Add a small flower with the platter to add a touch of aristrocracy.

Letterthis is probably the easiest option one has but it can mean a lot to a mother. Start the letter with a memory that you cherish with her or a quality of hers you find inspirational and adorable. move on to how she plays one of the most important roles in your life and end the letter telling her how much she means

to you and how much you love her. you may also make a collage of pictures from your childhood with recent ones and show her how lovely the journey has been, with her by your side.

mothers may be angry at you all the time but only because they love you more than themselves. love them the way they should be loved. A shout out to all the mothers out there - thank you for being there. Baizid Haque Joarder

Forget the fear of tiny earrings. This week TMAG brings you an easy DIY project to keep those easy-to-lose earrings in check

tMAG-NIFIceNt DIYThings you need • An empty frame with the glass and

the back piece removed• A piece of burlap just larger than

your frame• Starch spray (optional, but

recommended)• Staple gun• die cutting machine• freezer paper (Grease proof

paper)• Acrylic paint and foam brush• A fabric flower, to embellish • Additional burlap, for leaf

embellishments• hot glue gun

First step to hold up the earrings, spray the burlap piece with starch and then iron it till it’s dry. Cut any stencil from your freezer paper with the die cutting machine. Place the freezer paper onto your burlap piece, and iron it in place. then paint on the stencil with your acrylic paint and foam brush. Use only the required amount of paint and dab gently to achieve an antiqued look. Wait to dry the paint completely before removing the freezer paper.

Second step Place the frame on top of the burlap.

trace the height and width of the frame and trim away the excess. the burlap piece and the frame need to be of the same size. to stick the burlap piece tightly, use a staple gun to the back of your frame.

Third stepfrom the remaining burlap, cut out some floral or leaf shapes. Behind each leaf, add a small amount of hot glue and press to set it on the top corner of the frame. With a litte more hot glue, stick the flower atop the leaves and voila!.

She makes fake (and sometimes real) promises of waiting just across the road and makes little make believe games where you have to peep down the school gate in hopes of seeing her familiar shoes. Childhood was sweet, but moms made it sweeter.

now fast forward a decade and enter teenage. this is when everything is really happening. School is fun, there are as many crushes as there are pimples and amid all the liveliness, a mom is plainly a nuisance! there she stands, half an hour before school ends, shading herself with a makeshift fan in the heat and waiting for the final bell to ring. Why can’t she just send the car? many of us think this

way when we give her a forced hug at the end of the day and refuse to hand her the weight of the school bag that she is so happy to carry for you.

When she waits hour after hour while you give mock examinations at your coaching centres, with a bottle of juice or some snacks, some may feel stifled and babied to some extent. you don’t want your crush to see your mom obsessing over you now, do you?

imagine one day without your mom- without those drinks, those hugs, those nags. this lady willingly picks up, not just your dirty laundry but all the messes you make of your life and does it all with a smile on her back, with only your snubs

as encouragement. And when you’re done imagining, get up and give her a hug. She understands your need to keep a distance, but everyone deserves to feel

the love once in a while. And no one, we repeat, no one deserves it more than her.

Munira fidai

Because this issue is all about mothers and how important they are, cut us some slack while we get a little mushy and take you into a flashback. Rewind back to kindergarten: she wakes up before everyone, wakes you up, gets clothes on your back and breakfast in your tummy and come hell or high water, drops you to school. Regardless of how bad a time you give her during all this, she still kisses you goodbye, and even though it’s only a few hours, it feels like forever to let her go. Been there, done that? But how many of us still remember it?

MoMMY MAKeover Let’s face it, our mothers are way too busy being the super heroines of the household. Cooking, cleaning and making the house a home happens to be an integral part of their routine. While they are at it, they fail to realise that they too need to be pampered once in a while. But if they can’t go to a salon, you can certainly bring the salon home. Give your mom a makeover the TMAG way

Talk her into iteven a workhorse needs some time for itself. in other words, you have to make your mom understand that she needs to take a breather and let others pamper her for a change.

Hairtying up hair in a bun gets the work done without hair getting in the way. As helpful as it is, the sweat causes the scalp to become oily, and if your mother continues to do this, her hair will turn into dreadlocks. Give her a hot

oil massage to undo all the knots and tangles. Keep the oil for 20 minutes then wash her hair, using a mild shampoo. once you’re done, towel dry it first, then comb it. Blow dry to give it some bounce.

Mani-pedithis is no rocket science. you’ll need the following tools: nail file, nail polish remover, cotton balls, a nail buffer (available in dhali or Gulshan 1 dCC market), moisturiser and nail polish (base, colour and top coat).

Look of the week

Cut her nails using a nail clipper, then even out the edges using the nail file. do the same for her feet. Use the nail buffer to shine her nails. Soak her hands for two to three and her feet for five minutes in water. exfoliation can be done using a good body scrub with a mix of one tbsp sugar and one tbsp of baby oil. this will help scrub away

the dead skin. Rinse and pat dry, and apply baby oil to the cuticles. Scrape out dirt from under the nails and apply moisturiser on her hands. Apply nail polish and ask her to sit still while it dries.

follow up once a week, and you’ll have your mom feeling a like queen in no time. ruBaB nayeeM KHan

Pearlsfrom stud earrings to necklace strands, nothing adds a splash of sophistication the way these luminescent jewels do. Whether you’re at a fancy dinner, or making a presentation, or even on a first date, girls in pearls are in a different league altogether.

Silk ScarvesVintage prints are back with a vengeance, and if your mother dearest has managed to retain her silk scarves from the 60’s and 70’s, you’ve hit the jackpot. those prints are almost impossible to find these days. Adding a pop of colour to a blah tee and jeans combo, or complimenting a kurti, or even worn as a headscarf, the accessorising options are endless. funk it up with your favourite accessories

from Sparkling emotions or Avenue 19 and give it your personal flair.

Retro shadesthis sunny weather is perfect to kick back with a pair of vintage shades. tortoise shell? Aviators? Cat-eyes? oversized? We love them all, and can’t get enough. Wear it with a bold lip and a messy updo, and you’re the last word in style.

Handbagsfrom botuas to minaudieres, lady-like clutch purses are a must for any fancy event. So when you’re gearing up for that wedding dawat or prom night, reach into mom’s closet and grab her evening purse, and you’re always on point. SaBrina fatMa aHMad

TMAG TU ESDAY, MAY 6, 2014

this is the $100,000, 2014 tesla model S Performance Plus. like all electric cars, it has no engine, but the difference is that its liquid cooled induction motor cranks out over 400hP while somehow getting the equivalent of an astonishing 90mpg. And it looks good; a bit of Jaguar here and a bit of 7-series there. not dorky at all!

So it seems impressive, but is it going to be the vehicle that convinces us to finally take electric cars seriously?

now, going fast in a straight line is one thing but thanks to the tesla’s 43:57 weight distribution, the tesla corners really well.

it’s got a top speed of 133mph, which isn’t that impressive but when is

the last time you needed to go faster than that? (Unless your name is lewis “i am a f1 racer” hamilton).

it does 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds. for a car that weighs over 5000 pounds, that is impressive. okay, so it’s fast; it’s like “a cheetah being chased by wasps on rocket-ship” fast. What’s more impressive is that the torque is 100% available at zero rpms and it’s so quiet the cops will never hear you coming.

how the heck did tesla do that?Well, tesla is run by elon musk, a

billionaire industrialist, who, having made his fortunes as one of the investors of Paypal, set sights on getting Americans to drive electric cars.

this 2013 model S is really the

tipping point; there are cheaper models in the pipeline including an SUV and couple of pick-up trucks- which are all music to the motor-head ears. But everything rests on this car, meaning, that this car has to prove to the motor heads that electric cars are a way into the future.

Since there are fewer moving parts, you get less maintenance and you also get an average running cost of six cents per mile.

So, why wouldn’t you buy one? it comes down to one word; “Range.” it’s the one bogey word that we all think about when it comes down to electric cars. As we all just assume that we are going to die alone in the desert somewhere, because we couldn’t find an outlet.

tesla has claimed to have solved that issue too. the model S’ range of 265 miles puts it at level with most conventional cars. So, basically, if your daily commute is no more than 240 miles, you are probably not going to die a horrible death in the desert.

the tesla model S is simply astounding. tesla in their first attempt, have managed to make an American luxury sedan that competes with the greats (and they all have been doing it for years). forget the Germans, forget lincoln and Cadillac, this is what we should be excited about; a new American car that looks super cool and is super fast. taHSin MoMin

Kaiser (name changed to protect identity)15, is crazy about racing cars. Since he was a kid, he’s loved fast cars and chase games and action-packed cartoons and movies. things that require patience and concentration bore him easily. At first glance, he is just another hyperactive teenager. When you look closer, you begin to notice his difficulty in responding to people, the delayed speech and stunted linguistic skills. that’s when you realise that

Kaiser is mildly autistic.it’s hard enough for any parent to

accept that their child is less than a picture of health, but with the stigma attached to mental health issues in this country, it’s even harder. So difficult was it to take in, that when doctors diagnosed Kaiser with mild autism when he was 5, his father, hasan, dismissed the suggestion out of hand, and blamed the boy’s mother, Sabina for failing to give him time and attention.

A day in the life of a Mom0400 hours: the call for the fajr prayers. A very short power nap is on the cards.

0600 hours:the alarm goes off again. Got to wake up the maid and give her directions to prepare breakfast for the family and prepare lunch boxes for the kids.

0630 hours: Wake up the rest of the family. Some of them are cooperative and a sweet good morning is enough. the kids need a little more “persuasion.”

0645 hours: Prepare clothes for the family. Checking whether everything is ironed.

0700 hours: make sure that everyone has a good breakfast and is ready for the day.

0730 hours: Usher the family out and on their way.

0800 hours: Clean up. have breakfast.

0830 hours: Breather.

0900 hours: Plan the lunch menu.

1000 hours: Go out to the supermarket and get groceries.

1100 hours: oversee the maid as she cleans the house.

1200 hours: Pack lunch for the husband and send it to his office.

1300 hours: Shower. Prayers.

1400 hours: make sure the lunch is ready.

1430 hours: the kids are back from school. make them lemonade.

A mother’s sacrificeSabina wasn’t so ready to leave

her son’s condition untreated. She continued to consult doctors without her husband’s consent. When her son, failing to cope with the presence of other children, would end up screaming and throwing tantrums, she had to learn how to handle him. With the help of therapy for both mother and son, she has learned how best to take care of her son’s special needs.

it is a fight she fights alone,

because her husband remains in denial about Kaiser’s condition. this means attending and funding all the medical support by herself. this continues to require all her time and attention, something she gives without complaint. “i want to be by Kaiser’s side always, to help him make his dreams come true. if his brain cannot support him, i want to be there to help him through whatver path he chooses.”

digging right into the question that comes to mind when this woman saunters in is that where does this talented beauty come from. Jasna remarks that she is a “citizen of the world.” She says: “my father is french and my mother Bangali. i grew up in morocco, france, texas, new york, Spain, and now Bangladesh. i studied international relations, but i mainly do photography for a living.” Pursuing her innate passion for photography, her partner and she started an artistic wedding photo business called “travel Weddings.” Jasna has that magical quality of capturing the blush of the Bangali bride, the smile of the groom and the itsy bitsies of a wedding and giving it her own multicultural touch. “travel Weddings is unique because it’s ‘Bideshi.’ my partner is Scottish, and i’m a mix of a Bangali and french. this helps us have a unique and candid vision for Bangali weddings, while still being able to connect with the local audience. Being a woman, it also allows me to photograph the many intimate aspects of the weddings that men normally do not have access to (such as the bridal preparations).“ Apart from photography, Jasna has a few more quirks hidden under her belt. She says: “i also draw, dance, spin fire and hula hoop. i learned everything i know from the people i met and the things i witnessed.” Before bringing her passion to Bangladesh, Jasna has made a mark around the world with her photography and art. She adds: “i had

several exhibitions around the world, most of which were photography, and some featuring my drawings. i had my own solo shows in tokyo, Barcelona, new york, and dallas. my photography was published on the front cover of a big magazine in Barcelona, the metropolitan. And now i also have photos of me on the cover of dhaka tribune’s magazines!”

We wondered what she finds in Bangladesh that’s so appealing. to that she replied: “dhaka has been a worker’s paradise for me. there is so much demand for art and creativity here! Although i’m shooting a bunch for fashion and food photography, i’m really enjoying shooting colourful Bangali weddings.”

the hula hoop dancer cannot decide what she loves most about dhaka. “there are many things to love, but i have to say that people’s genuine happiness is what inspires me about this country, and one of the main reason i decided to come live here. She recalls her visit to old dhaka and was in for a pleasant surprise. it was a very photogenic culture shock; beautiful chaos and amazing biriyani.”

Acquiring the taste of so many different cultures, Jasna’s ideas stem from the many experiences she has had – and that’s what shines out in her art and photography. “i want to continue my art here, by showing Bangladesh the outside world, and showing the outside world Bangladesh. it’s nice to be in a place where people are enthusiastic about new things.” n

“ “I consider myself a ‘citizen of the world,’ as my personality is a big mesh of all the places I lived in. I am neither French nor Bangali, nor

American, nor anything. I am ALL of it

Spotlight on Jasna Artists that inspire her ? there are many, but i like Klimt and Audrey Kawasaki because of the way they create a beautiful and surreal world around their model.

She matched the zodiacs and prayed for eternity

every coincidence was a call from destiny

And now she was lost in a cocoon of uncertainty.

Adrenaline rushes and impromptu dates

late night parties and intense kissing

flesh revealed and conscience neglected

She thought she was doing it all right.

And now she was lost in a cocoon of uncertainty.

She dwelt on sunshine and clear skies while it evolved

She let her guard down for his innate ardent

She let him turn black into white And now she was lost in a cocoon

of uncertainty.

She rummaged for hope but there was none

She looked for bliss but the pain was sheer

She was once all daises and sunshine

And now she was lost in a cocoon of uncertainty.

Ryan Kramer and Chris Allison’s comic/animation site toonhole, is a compilation of random comics that explore dark humour. this comic is sure to give other internet comics a run for their money, particularly because they are awfully AWfUl. if you thought nedroid and formal Sweatpants were downright loco, think again.

What can be applauded about most of toonhole’s comics is that, they aren’t trying too hard to please those who are involved in the comic culture; rather they emphasise mostly on the humour, which solely depends on the reader’s wit. the artwork adds value;

“you should never expect from your friends,” i told her. “they’ll disappoint you one time or another.”

on the same day, i was proven wrong.

“Ping.” the lift arrives. i entered, alone, for the first time. on my way down, my sister called. it would still take her five more minutes to come. As the lift stopped on the ground floor, instead of getting out, i pressed four again.

Up, up and up, and then, with a jerk, it stopped. the light went out, and it was pitch black. i pressed the emergency button, then immediately dialled my friend’s

as the protagonists in a mother-daughter complex tug o’ war is probably the one that resonates most within the readers. in the heart of the South, where saints and voodoo ruled side by side, the characters are too universal to discount.

Sidda, a popular theatre director has a falling out with her mother because of a misquoted interview. She panics, postpones her wedding and disappears to lick her wounds at a cabin on the lake Quinault. to give her a deeper understanding of a mother she loved but never really “knew”, the ya-yas, send her a scrapbook. As Sidda starts leafing through the books and the letters – a hilarious view of the often grim depression era South the ya yas - women who broke the no-booze rule

at the cotillion, skinny-dipped their way to jail in the town water tower, disrupted the Shirley temple look-alike contest, and bonded for life because, as one says: “it’s so much fun being a bad girl!” Sidda starts seeing her mother in a different light, if not understanding her still. As she puts it in the end: “i will never fully know my mother....” the point is; not knowing another person, or learning to love another person.

But it is simply this: “how tender can we bear to be?” “What good manners can we show as we welcome ourselves and others into our hearts?” And that’s what love is, essentially after all. this is a lovely story, where Wells’ descriptions act as a time-machine of sorts. one for the bookcase! naBeela M

number. She, along with two other friends immediately went into action, calling people for help and asking them to get me out. As i stood there in the lift, sweating in the heat, but not suffocating…

i felt nothing. i stood there for an hour and a half,

smiling at my ghostly reflection on the mirror that stared back at me, texting and talking to my friends outside, telling them i am fine. Well, the point i am trying to make is that the lift-man was on a holiday, no one there knew how to operate it, moreover it was jammed. the landlord didn’t want to ruin the configuration of the building by breaking the lift open, my mother’s blood pressure was at its peak, along with my friends’ anxiety and exertion levels from running up and down the flights of stairs shouting instructions. And amid all this, i felt nothing. i asked

myself, isn’t this the time i’m supposed to feel something? fear at least? have realisations?

experiences are much more bland than that. it’s just us assuming it’s scary, or great. Assumptions are funny sometimes, they have everyone around you thinking you’re feeling a certain way and feel empathetic about it, whereas you don’t. Assumptions lull you into a false belief that your life will change when anything out of the ordinary happens. that you can brag about it when you’re through the challenge. But it’s much simpler than that.

We assume some incidents will leave us changed forever, that we will start to act differently if it happens. But it’s about us, about how we perceive things. it’s on us whether or not we change, not on the situation. in truth, “life goes on.” naMira SHaMeeM

in the year 1996, the world was taken by a strange and quirky storm of black comedy. Presented by the characters Joel and ethan Coen, the Coen brothers, the bodies kept on piling up in the small town of Bemidji, minnesota. But compared to then, some of the names have changed under the same title, and the cases are completely different too. So, does the strange originality still remain?

the opening credits in this tV series starring, Billy Bob thornton and martin freeman, our very own hobbit in the shoes of doctor Watson, informs us that although the names are different, all the events actually happened. So, it is squashed up with the friendliness of northern minnesota. Also, it harbours that dark and dry humour, especially from the mouth of thornton’s lorne malvo, a manipulative assassin, who seems to take delight in studying the gruesome chaotic effects of his crafty persuasive words.

freeman plays the insurance salesman, compared to the car sales man in the original plot, lester nygaard, a quiet, long-suffering perpetual victim; or as his wife calls him, a “loser.” lester is one of those guys who keeps his emotions bottled up, and when malvo popped up, it all erupted into a series of homicides, sending lester down a path he’d never imagined.

noah hawley has created a version of fargo that doesn’t really copy anything from the original movie, except the concept of the Coen Brothers. As a result, it is his own vision of the previous plot, while simultaneously paying a tribute to the original one; bringing to us another chance to live in that strange hilarious world of “minnesota nice.” Given the pitfalls that were possible during the transition from a movie to a series, in the end, fargo is extremely impressive and was pulled off with surprising vigor by hawley and a superb cast.

from the house of Bluehole Studio comes this exciting new 3d fantasy themed mmoRPG, the exiled Realm of Arborea also called teRA. this week tmAG looks at what made this game take the world by storm.

teRA was initially released in South Korea back in the January of 2011. eventually, the game rapidly caught on to peeps in the US, Japan and europe. teRA to describe simply is your typical mmoRPG with the typical traits: questing, crafting, and player vs player combat. What’s not so simple about it is its combat, which uses a real-time system from a third person camera. you get a cross hair with which you will need to target and use your abilities to fight; on the other hand you will also have to actively dodge out of harmful abilities. this single handedly makes the game very fun and engaging unlike your age-old WoW combat (non-target battle system), which is basically

pressing tab to target and just clicking away to attack.

the game boasts seven races and eight classes, and to ease your gaming experience, the classes are rated in stars based on their difficulty. now, to this gamer, the most amazing aspect of playing this game was the absolutely gobsmacking and stunning graphics. the world of Arborea is extremely beautiful; Kumas, nagas, Basilisks, elves, you have it all and they look gorgeous in their settings. it’s extremely hard to not keep going on about this game however we can’t give much away hence, you are all invited to try this game out, as it is free-to-play. you can download the game from their website, however, it is an extremely big file. A decent internet connection and computer is highly recommended for the optimal experience.

moviethIS MeANS WAr 300: Rise of an empire is a movie of epic proportions.

it provides background on xerxes, leonidas and his wife, Gorgo, sequencing events before, during and after 300.

the main achievement of the movie was in its visuals, especially the fight scenes where viewers were treated to not only grand armies, weapons and machinery, but fearful warriors, both male and female. the film also highlighted the back stories of the protagonist leonidas and the antagonist xerxes, while introducing the veiwers to the powerful female warrior Artemisia and the Greek themistocles.

Key points of analyses within the film for the viewer include how xerxes, being a man of colour fights against fair-skinned leonidas, is not offered sympathy,

nor given redemption within the narrative of the film for having observed his father’s death. he (xerxes) was never offered the place of a tragic hero within the franchise; it is leonidas and then his wife, Gorgo, who get to be the heroes of the plot, while xerxes is made the villain.

Gender plays a key role in defining Artemisia and Gorgo; one is a naval commander who must rise above her “womanly ways” to lead an army only after having observed her family’s annihilation and suffering subsequent sexual slavery, while another is a wife who is strong in personality from the beginning but is allowed a proper place in leadership only after her husband’s death. Both fulfill their roles beautifully.

300: Rise of an empire is not to be missed. Go check it out today!
