The TMDL development is in the Stage 1 phase, which consists of Watershed Characterization, Data Analysis, and Methodology Selection. Currently data is being collected for the watershed characterization and data analysis. This update provides an overview of data collected to date. Watershed Overview The Evergreen Lake watershed (ILDK17) is located within Woodford County and McLean County, Illinois. The watershed is located within the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mackinaw River Basin (Hydrologic Unit Code [HUC] 07130004). The Evergreen Lake watershed encompasses an area of approximately 40 square miles. Figure 1 shows the impaired lake segment within the watershed. The impaired segment (segment SDA) is shown in red. According to Illinois EPA 2004 draft Section 303 (d) List, Evergreen Lake is impaired for total phosphorus and total suspended solids. Data Review Table 1 shows the currently collected data along with the data source information. Topography Data A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) has been obtained to help delineate the watersheds in a geographic information system (GIS) for the Evergreen Lake drainage area. A USGS DEM of 30-meter resolution has been downloaded for each USGS quadrangle that corresponds to the watershed area. The DEM along with the USGS quadrangle maps provide relevant topographic information. To date, no GIS compatible file containing elevation contours has been obtained.

Flow and Stage Data The City of Bloomington has supplied stage data for various locations in and around Evergreen Lake. Data ranges from 1998 to 2001 and includes the sites Lake Evergreen spillway, Lake Evergreen tributary, and Sixmile Creek. Flow data is usually obtained through the USGS. Thorough searches of the available data has indicated there are no flow stations with data located upstream of Evergreen Lake.

Precipitation, Temperature, and Evaporation Data The majority of the Evergreen Lake watershed is located within McLean County. Daily precipitation and temperature data has been obtained through the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) database. Various stations within the county have daily precipitation and temperature data. Table 2 contains more detailed information about each of these stations. Data used for analysis will be chosen based on assessment needs as well as proximity to the Evergreen Lake watershed.

The Hennepin Power Plant station was chosen to be representative of pan evaporation conditions for Evergreen Lake. The Hennepin Power Plant station is located approximately 60 miles north northwest of the Evergreen Lake watershed along the Senachwine Lake. The station has a period of record from 1980 to 2002 and provides monthly pan evaporation values for the months of May through September.

Water Quality Data Multiple water quality stations exist within the Evergreen Lake watershed and are presented in Table 3. This table provides station location as well as the station identification number. This information is also presented in Figure 2.

Water quality data has also been provided by the City of Bloomington in both electronic and hard copy versions. The data that has been provided as a hard copy is in the process of being entered into electronic format for purposes of data analysis.

Land Use In late 1999, the U. S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDA), and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) began a cooperative, interagency initiative to produce statewide land cover information on a recurring basis. The Illinois Interagency Landscape Classification Project (IILCP) completed Cycle 1 of this initiative in the summer of 2002, resulting in the Land Cover of Illinois 1999-2000 inventory and associated database (http://www.agr.state.il.us/gis/landcover99-00.html). This data was downloaded from the website then clipped to the watershed boundary using GIS. Table 4 lists the land uses contributing to the Evergreen Lake watershed as well as each land use area and the percent of the total area. Figure 3 displays the landuse for the watershed. Information regarding future landuse will be obtained through the City of Normal Planning Department.

Animal Confinement Operations Livestock data has been provided for McLean County by McLean County SWCD. All data has been provided in hard copy and is currently being entered into electronic format.

Soil Data Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO) data has been downloaded for McLean County and has been clipped to the watershed boundary using GIS. Unfortunately, SSURGO data is not available for Woodford County and therefore, there is currently no available SSURGO data for the northwest portion of the watershed. The Woodford County portion of the watershed encompasses an area of roughly 1,000 acres. State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) data will be used in lieu of the SSURGO data in this area.

Cropping Practices Data associated with cropping practices has been provided for McLean County by McLean County SWCD. All data has been provided in hard copy and is currently being entered into electronic format.

Reservoir Characteristics The City of Bloomington has provided a report titled "Aeration/Destratification in Lake Evergreen, McLean County, Illinois." Along with providing some water quality data, this report contains some information about surface area and depths within the lake. The water quality dataset that was discussed in an earlier section also contains depth measurements.

Septic Systems Information regarding septic systems is being obtained from the McLean County Department of Health.

Conclusion The next steps for TMDL development include continuing to hand-enter water quality data and then analyze the collected data. Upon completion of data entry and gathering, data analysis will be completed and methodologies to complete the TMDL will be outlined. After determining the appropriate methodology, additional data collection may be necessary and the TMDL will be developed as outlined in the methodology.
