The Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Traffic Noise Model (TNM) is a software application for the modeling of highway traffic noise. FHWA’s TNM 3.0 ® is the latest version of this software. State and local entities seeking to use Federal Aid Highway Program (FAHP) funding, must use the TNM to analyze potential noise impacts from their proposed project. TNM 3.0 is a major update to the previous version - TNM 2.5. The TNM 2.5 was released in 2004 and no longer meets modern standards of interface design or software maintenance. TNM 3.0 incorporates new technology and research; and accounts for input received from TNM 2.5 users over the past 12 years.

The current release is a Final Draft version of TNM 3.0. It will be available for download and use for 6 months. Users will be able to provide comments and ask questions during this period. FHWA will consider the input received prior to releasing the Final version of TNM 3.0 for required use on projects. TNM 3.0 Draft Release

TNM 3.0 is also accessible as an extension to Esri’s ArcGIS ®, AutoDesk’s AutoCAD ®, and Bentley’s MicroStation ®. Complex highway design and alignment work can be completed in CAD and GIS environments using native tools, while allowing the design team to test their work with the underlying, integrated noise model. Engineers will be able to present roadway projects, including the noise abatement plans, to the public more easily using the new interfaces.

Interoperability with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and Microstation
